    Abstract [en]

    This study aims to identify and examine the key success factors for companies in the financial sector that seek to use artificial intelligence (AI) to enhance their operations. Through a quantitative survey conducted among companies already utilizing or planning to use AI technology, the study seeks to gain a deeper understanding of the challenges and requirements that companies face in effectively implementing and harnessing AI. 

     

    The findings from the study will be utilized to develop advice and recommendations that can support companies in their endeavors to leverage AI technology. By providing insights and strategic guidance, the study can assist companies in planning and executing their own AI initiatives more successfully within the financial sector. 

     

    A central research question addressed by the study is: What are the key success factors for companies seeking to use AI to enhance their operations in financial services? Through analyzing the survey responses, the study will contribute to the knowledge of how companies in the financial sector can benefit from AI and overcome potential obstacles. The overarching goal is to promote more efficient utilization of AI technology within financial services while ensuring companies' success and competitiveness in today's fast-paced and technology-driven business environment. 

     

    The results indicate that companies in the financial sector recognize the significance of data accessibility and quality as critical success factors, according to the respondents. Furthermore, the findings reveal that ethical, social, and political considerations related to AI are of importance, but there exists a degree of disagreement among respondents regarding the importance of these issues. These conclusions, together with prior research in the field, can inform the development of strategies and actions that foster responsible and successful use of AI in financial services.

    Abstract [en]

    The purpose of this paper is to contribute to the relatively small pool of literature on the relationship between import competition and research and development (R&D). Understanding the effects of increasing competition from abroad may help policymakers pursue regulatory actions to protect industries who have lost their competitiveness. At the same time, high-technological firms should me more inclined to compete with foreign competition than low-technological firms, given that the former exhibit a more elastic demand curve and absorptive capabilities. We investigate the issue by looking at nine U.S. manufacturing industries from 1991 through 2014, using publicly available R&D data from the Business R&D and Innovation Survey and tarifflevel data from World Integrated Trade Solution. We use a long, balanced panel estimated with both OLS and GMM. Results show that increased import competition forces high-tech industries to respond with increased levels of R&D. Findings also suggest a positive, but smaller, increase in R&D spending among low-tech industries as well.

    Today, Sweden's ambition is to be the best in the world to use the possibilities of digitization, while at the same time aiming to be a leader in the work for sustainable development and Agenda 2030. The study aims to study whether there is a clear connection between how the theory of how one should work with digitization to achieve sustainability applies in the practical work at national and local level. Furthermore, one can use the result to identify how one should use digitization and plan for a more sustainable society.

    The aim of the study is to be able to see what differences and / or similarities there are at the different strategic levels, where the study is limited to comparing Sundsvall's municipality with the rest of Sweden.

    The parameters examined are supported by the theory that William Mitchell has written in his book "e-topia", which describes the connection between digitization and sustainability and answers the question of how to achieve sustainability with the help of digitization.

     

    The report is based on a qualitative method, in which the result is gathered from two interviews and two policy documents, respectively, in order to be compared and discussed in the report's concluding discussion and conclusion part. The result shows that it is the human transformation that is of significant importance both at national and local level, but that there is no clear link to the sustainability work in the national digitization strategy. Instead of focusing on what abilities that are required to be able to use digital techniques or technologies, one should instead focus on how digitalization contributes to the sustainability work in order to eliminate unnecessary processes or steps.

    Abstract [en]

    Huntington’s disease (HD) and Spinocerebellar ataxia (SCA) are incurable neurodegenerative diseases that affect the central nervous system. Amyloids, highly organized protein aggregates, are a hallmark for many neurodegenerative diseases. The presence and accumulation of amyloids are toxic and constitute the major cause of neuron cell death. Both genetic and environmental factors contribute to the onset and progression of these diseases. However, despite intensive research, the underlying cause remains unclear. The role of viral infection as an environmental factor in the context of neurodegenerative diseases has not received much attention. The purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of Herpes Simplex Virus 1 (HSV-1) infection on nuclear amyloid aggregation in model cell lines of HD and SCA. The research process consists mainly of laboratory work which involved the use of several molecular techniques used in the field of biotechnology. The work comprises cultivating cells, infecting cells with HSV-1, Fluorescence microscopy, Western Blot and isolation and detection of amyloids. Western Blot is used for the analysis of specific proteins associated with protein aggregation in HD and SCA. The techniques used for detecting amyloids are Dot Blot and Antibody-staining of amyloids in cells. The results from Western Blot showed that aggregates changed in the presence of the virus. This pattern is observed for both HD and SCA1 cell lines. A big effort is done in this study to optimize Dot Blot as it is method that could be applied in every lab. Normalization of samples proved to be the most challenging part with Dot Blot. No definitive conclusions can be drawn from the Dot Blot results as reproducibility and sensitivity were lacking. This work addresses some of the difficulties encountered when working with detection of amyloids especially Dot Blot. Antibody-staining of amyloids showed that amyloids were formed in the presence of virus in comparison to non-infected. To conclude, aggregates changed, and amyloids were formed in the presence of virus. These results point to the fact that HSV-1 infection could be involved in the process of nuclear amyloid aggregation. The data presented in this thesis will need further investigation and characterization to identify the precise role of viral-induced amyloid formation in HD and SCA patient cells.

    It is increasingly important for cities to attract visitors, potential new residents and businesses. Jönköping is one of the cities working with place marketing, a strategy that intends to mediate a positive image of the city, in order to accomplish just that.

    People often have a need to preserve the memory of a trip into something tangible. Anyone visiting Jönköping encounters a souvenir choice, much like the one in many other cities. Linked to the idea of positive place marketing, our work aims to investigate how we as product developers can create a product that en¬hances the image of Jönköping based on the thought that all residents are con¬sig¬nors. Accordingly, we develop three different products from the residents' own image of the city.

    Our research questions are:

    Based on the photographs, what image of Jönköping do the ambassadors mediate of their own city?

    As designers, what in Jönköping's history versus the image of Jönköping today, can we seize in order to give products for visitors a sense of authenticity?

    As designers, how can we use knowledge of place branding in the development of souvenirs?

    We performed interviews within three different aspects: history, souvenirs and place branding, all focused on the city of Jönköping. The interviews and a work-shop formed the basis for the further design process.

    This work has resulted in three products: the matchbox Det nya Jönköping i en historisk förpackning, highlights an important part in the city's history and becomes a conversation piece. Lek dig genom Jönköping want to show visitors what the city offers, and distinguish it from others, from the on-site. Detaljerna gör staden is an every¬day object and function can get residents to begin to discover the details of their own city.

    Through the use of knowledge and theories of place branding and souvenirs, we would argue that we have found a way to actually catch the residents' image of the city in a number of products. We also believe that it would be able to apply this type of project in other locations to create more authentic and at the same time innovative souvenirs.

    I dag finns det många olika ramverk att välja bland när det kommer till applikationsutveckling och det kan vara svårt att veta vilket av dessa man ska använda sig av. Denna rapport kommer undersöka två olika ramverk som skrivs i två olika programmeringsspråk vilka är Django och Node.js. Jämförelsen mellan dessa ramverk kommer handla om skillnader i användarvänligheten, det vill säga vilka typer av applikationer som bäst stödjs av något av ramverken, vilka serverleverantörer som har stöd för respektive ramverk samt vilka kunskaper utvecklaren bör ha för att behärska dessa ramverk.

    De metoder som används i denna rapport är insamling och analysering av olika dokument och artiklar samt intervjuer som utförts hos ett företag som arbetar med ramverket Django för att kunna besvara forskningsfrågorna. Vid sidan av detta har även en applikation skriven i Django implementerats för att öka kunskaperna kring detta ramverk.

    De resultat som framkommit är att ramverket Django främjar en snabbare utveckling och är mer tidseffektivt än vad Node.js är. Applikationer skrivna i Django besitter även en högre grundsäkerhet och detta för att det finns inbygga säkerhetsmoduler i ramverket. Node.js å andra sidan har ett större utbud av serverleverantörer samt en annan möjlighet att skräddarsy applikationer. Valet av ramverk är i detta fall mer en fråga om vilket programmeringsspråk som utvecklaren behärskar bäst.

    Abstract [en]

    We propose a spatiotemporal characterization of the entanglement dynamics in many-body localized (MBL) systems, which exhibits a striking resemblance to dynamical heterogeneity in classical glasses. Specifically, we find that the relaxation times of local entanglement, as measured by the concurrence, are spatially correlated yielding a dynamical length scale for quantum entanglement. As a consequence of this spatiotemporal analysis, we observe that the considered MBL system is made up of dynamically correlated clusters with a size set by this entanglement length scale. The system decomposes into compartments of different activity such as active regions with fast quantum entanglement dynamics and inactive regions where the dynamics is slow. We further find that the relaxation times of the on-site concurrence become broadly distributed and more spatially correlated, as disorder increases or the energy of the initial state decreases. Through this spatiotemporal characterization of entanglement, our work unravels a previously unrecognized connection between the behavior of classical glasses and the genuine quantum dynamics of MBL systems.

    An evaluation of residential sprinklers and water mist nozzles in a residential area fire scenario2017Report (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

    Commercial residential sprinklers are usually fitted with 3 mm glass bulbs having a nominal operating temperature of 68°C or a high-sensitivity solder link, usually with a nominal temperature rating of 74°C. Previous work show that there is a significant potential for improving sprinkler response times in a residential room fire scenario by using glass bulbs with a lower Response Time Index (RTI) and lower operating temperature than commonly used. The objective of this study was to investigate any improved performance due to earlier activation of residential sprinklers. A series of fire tests was conducted inside a test compartment sized 3.66 m by 3.66 m. The fire test source consisted of either a simulated or authentic upholstered chair. For the majority of the tests, the flow rate of the residential sprinkler was 30.3 liter/min (corresponding to the minimum design density 2.05 mm/min as per the recommendations in NFPA 13D and 13R). Additional tests were conducted at 60.6 liter/min (the minimum design density 4.1 mm/min as per NFPA 13). Tests were also conducted with commercial low- and high-pressure water mist nozzles and a stand-alone high-pressure water mist system.

    The results show that earlier activation of residential sprinklers had a small effect on its performance, especially for the authentic upholstered chair scenario, when flowing 30.3 liter/min. The rather small effect is probably due to that the discharge density was too low to provide fire suppression. When the flow rate was increased to 60.6 liter/min, the performance was considerably improved as compared to the flow of 30.3 liter/min. Any improvement in performance of earlier activation was, however, not investigated for the 60.6 liter/min flow rate.

    The flow rates of the commercial low- and high-pressure water mist water mist nozzles ranged from 17.2 liter/min to 36.7 liter/min. Roughly, it could be concluded that the performance of the water mist nozzles were comparable or better than the residential sprinkler at approximately half the water flow rate for the tested fire scenarios.

    The stand-alone high-pressure water mist system had a flow rate of 8.2 liter/min. The performance was comparable to that of the other water mist nozzles in the study The performance was comparable to that of the other water mist nozzles in the study, despite a considerably earlier activation. However, the results indicate that the performance was relatively much influenced whether the simulated upholstered chair was orientated with its front towards the test compartment or with its front towards the back wall (poorer performance). This would suggest that the position of the fire test relative to the position of the unit is a crucial factor and underlines the importance of a thoughtful positioning in practical applications.

    Abstract [en]

    Business Process Management (BPM) is a popular concept used by organizations to increase their business process knowledge, process awareness and process orientation. As this concept is multidisciplinary, true BPM success requires considering a variety of factors. Thus, although many modern organizations have already successfully adopted BPM, there is a notable amount of rather traditional organizations struggling to find the right way to set up BPM. Despite the fact that there is an almost infinite amount of literature concerning aspects of BPM implementation and related managerial aspects, this theoretical knowledge is not or only partially transferable to the specific settings of organizations trying to successfully adopt BPM. For this purpose, this study aims to investigate what factors a global industrial organization must consider when planning for a successful BPM implementation at broad scale. This case study comprises a literature analysis as well as quantitative and qualitative methods that are designed to identify a set of critical success factors (CSFs) and evaluate their importance and magnitude at the specific case of a global industrial organization. 

    The findings suggest that, overall, BPM success comes through the interplay of a variety of factors, reaching from culture to strategic alignment, which are highly interdependent and interrelated. The analyzed literature does not provide adequate practical implications that industrial practitioners can confidently apply. For this reason, this study provides a quasi-prescriptive guideline with operationalizable recommendations. Further, in combination with a proposed BPM maturity assessment, this methodical approach equips BPM practitioners to master their individual BPM transformation.

    The acquisition of an Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) involves a major investment,which often accounts for a large part of the company's total budget. It is close toimpossible to meet all the demands of companies on the system, which makes theprocurement process of Enterprise Resource Planning a complex and difficult process.In the previous research carried out, it is only taken into consideration how largecompanies handle the procurement process, which means that medium-sized companiesend up not accounted for. It is therefore important to investigate how the procurementprocess for medium-sized companies looks and the challenges that arise are dealt with.The result of this study shows both differences and similarities between medium andlarge companies in terms of procurement processes, its challenges and how companieschoose to handle them.

    Several utility companies are today offering products and services related to microgeneration of solar electricity which may seem irrational since a decreased usage of energy of a customer will lead to a decreased profitability for the core business. An increased demand for microgenerating facilities therefore creates a need for change of the utility companies’ current business models. Solar cells and distributed electricity generation are today developing into new markets that constitutes a new competitive force within the energy sector. The companies need to take this competitive force into account if they are not to be harmed in the long-term as the market develops. The aim of this thesis is to examine how the utility companies can develop their business models in order to support distributed electricity generation and microgeneration of solar electricity in a sustainable way.

    Six different business models have been identified that are used in different parts of the world in order to deploy solar cell technologies. These are 1) customer owned that implies that the customer owns the solar cell facility after delivery, 2) community owned where an utility company or a third-party actor coordinates and runs a solar cell project with several owners or customers, 3) third-party owned that implies that a service company offers a complete solution to end customers and finances this through a third-party actor, 4) cross-selling where solar cells are sold as extra equipment or add-ons to other products, 5) host-owned feed-in that implies that all the generated electricity are fed in to the grid for a high compensation and also 6) modular based value propositions where a customer can choose between different packages of products and services that builds upon each other. The four groups customer related-, supplier related-, policy related- and technology related barriers against diffusion of solar cells and microgeneration could be identified within the theoretical framework of the thesis. In total, 17 theoretical barriers could be identified.

    After an initial study of literature, a proper method constituted by three different parts could be chosen for the empirical work of the thesis. An online focus group discussion is together with desk research providing a foundation for a mapping of contextual opportunities and threats. A focus group discussion was decided to provide a proper combination of width and depth and was executed online since this demands less resources and can reach geographically spread respondents. Desk research was decided to be a proper supplement for the e-focus group. In order to be able to study the current business models in more depth, a case study was also executed constituting five different interviews at a Swedish utility company that offers sales of electricity and solar cells and also is a grid owner.

    The empirical work resulted in a mapping of 38 opportunities and 27 threats that utility companies are faced with as the market for distributed electricity generation and microgeneration of solar electricity expands. There is also a need for contextual changes regarding policies and research as the utility companies are changing their business models. Though, utility companies should be able to anticipate a change towards a more distributed electricity market and implement new business models already today. There should already exist a basis for the utility companies to influence both politics and research through for example industry associations. It can through the result of this thesis be found that microgeneration is a growing substitute to traditional sales of electricity that threatens companies in several activities in the electricity sector. The way Swedish companies handle this new market threat is not sustainable and needs to be changed.     This paper focuses on Service Level Agreements (SLAs) for industrial applications that aim to port some of the control functionalities to the cloud. In such applications, industrial requirements should be reflected in SLAs. In this paper, we present an approach to integrate safety-related aspects of an industrial application to SLAs. We also present the approach in a use case. This is an initial attempt to enrich SLAs for industrial settings to consider safety aspects, which has not been investigated thoroughly before.

    Ultrasound Communication through Thin Plates: Understanding the Channel2023Licentiate thesis, comprehensive summary (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

    Ultrasound, composed of sound waves with frequencies above the human audible range, has become widely used in various technological fields for digital communications. In the past, acoustic and ultrasonic waves were employed in military and commercial un-derwater wireless communication systems due to their superior performance compared to electromagnetic waves. Ultrasound has also emerged as a viable alternative to radio and wired transmission for data transmission through solid bodies like metal plates and pipe walls. Notably, ultrasound offers high-security features as it is nearly undetectable from outside the room, minimizing the risks of wireless interception and attacks like Bluesniping and jamming.

    In any digital communication system, understanding the propagation channel between the transmitter and receiver is crucial. The ultrasound communication channel comprises three main components: transmitting and receiving transducers and the medium through which the sound propagates. Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) is a multi-carrier scheme that divides the available spectrum into multiple non-overlapping subcarriers for digital communication.

    In the context of ultrasound communication, the channel consists of two parts: the combined response of the transducers used as the transmitter and receiver, and the im-pulse response of the propagation medium. When dealing with a thin plate with parallel surfaces, this results in a reverberating channel. The reverberating channel comprises a primary pulse along with echo pulses that possess similar shapes but decaying amplitudes. The amplitude decay occurs due to four prominent factors: power losses in the trans-ducers at each side, transmission losses at the boundaries of the plate and transducer, ultrasound pulse attenuation within the plate, and beam spreading as the ultrasound pulse travels over distance. The reverberations elongate the impulse response of the channel, thus require a long cyclic prefix to prevent data symbols to overlap. However, this limitation restricts the achievable bit rate and energy efficiency of the system.

    In this thesis, we present a model for the reverberating ultrasound channel suitable for various plate materials. We propose a novel system-level path loss model that accounts for losses at the transducers, transmission losses, material attenuation, and diffraction losses. Based on this model, we calculate a comprehensive link budget that explicitly considers plate thickness. Furthermore, we conduct a quantitative analysis to evaluate the impact of Inter-Symbol Interference (ISI) and Inter-Carrier Interference (ICI) on the performance of the OFDM system. Through computer simulations, we evaluate the system’s performance and demonstrate that for a metal plate with a thickness of 5 mm, an uncoded data rate of 32 Mbps can be achieved.

    Virtual production development is adopted by many companies in the production industry and digital models and virtual tools are utilized for strategic, tactical and operational decisions in almost every stage of the value chain. This paper suggest a testbed concept that aims the production industry to adopt a virtual production development process with integrated tool chains that enables holistic optimizations, all the way from the overall supply chain performance down to individual equipment/devices. The testbed, which is fully virtual, provides a mean for development and testing of integrated digital models and virtual tools, including both technical and methodological aspects.

    Ro-ro transportation is a type of short-sea shipping where the wheeled cargo is transported by ro-ro (roll-on/roll-off) vessels.This transportation type is different than other sea shipping transportations such as container shipping. The international ro-ro industry between Turkey and Europe has grown significantly in the past decades mostly due to the problems that Turkish international freight operators faced on the land routes through European countries. Currently, there are three companies operating ro-ro on the European lines; U.N. Ro-Ro, Alternative Ro-Ro and Ulusoy Ro-Ro. U.N. Ro-Ro is the market leader with 65% market share and is also the fourth largest ro-ro operator in terms of capacity in lanemeters. Alternative Ro-Ro is the second largest ro-ro operator with 23% market share and Ulusoy Ro-Ro is the third with 12%. The companies emerged at different times in the market with different resources and strategies. Through archival studies and interviews, this thesis focuses on the analysis of the ro-ro industry with PESTLE Analysis and Michael Porter’s Five Forces and the strategies of the existing ro-ro operators in the market. PESTLE Analysis presented that factors that affect export and import volumes such as political and economical factors affect the ro-ro industry the most. Porter’s Five Forces Analysis presented that the power of buyers, the threat of land transportation as substitute and rivalry are high, the power of suppliers is medium, and the threat of new entrant and container shipping as substitute are low. The most commonly used strategies are differentiation, diversification, alliance and specialization strategies.

    Sammanfattning

    Monteringshallen hos Metso Paper Karlstad är beroende av många utomstående funktioner och processer. De som jobbar med montering och utcheckning måste koordinera sina arbeten med tillverkningen, underleverantörer, inköp, konstruktion och skeppning.

    Alla är medvetna om att det finns problem i monteringshallen och att det måste det göras något för att komma till rätta med dem. Men vilka orsakerna är till problemen finns det olika uppfattningar om. En del upplever det också som att problemen återkommer gång på gång. Få försök har gjorts för att på metodiskt sätt få en gemensam syn på problematiken eller ta fram fakta som kan ligga till grund för beslut om förbättringsområden. Dessutom finns en attityd om att kvalitetsarbete mest tar tid. Problemen anses inte härröra från montaget utan de får helt enkelt finna sig att vara de som städar upp efter andra.

    Syftet med detta examensarbete har varit att svara på frågeställningar om problemens orsaker, dess kostnadsstorlekar och vilka åtgärder som kan vara lämpliga för att minska kvalitetsbristkostnaderna i monteringshallen. Det övergripande målet har varit monteringshallens utveckling av kvalitetsarbetet. Rapporten är baserad på de anställdas erfarenheter som framkommit vid intervjuer. Teorin är vald med fokus på de olika delar som krävs för långsiktigt och kontinuerligt kvalitetsarbete.

    Intervjuerna visar att medvetenheten om sin egen del i problem och problemlösning är låg. De betraktar sig själva som om de inte har del i problemen. Detta är mindre bra eftersom det finns många beroenden till andra funktioner. Dessutom behandlas det många varianter av maskiner vilket än mer ökar behovet av väl fungerande processer. Därför är den nuvarande attityden och kvalitetstänkandet ett stort hinder mot nödvändigt förbättringsarbete. Orsakerna till omarbetningar lagras inte vilket försvårar möjligheterna att på ett effektivt sätt finna lösningar på problemen.

    Rapportens resultat är en genomgång av de nödvändiga byggstenar som krävs för att långsiktigt kunna bedriva framgångsrikt kvalitetsarbete. Det rekommenderas att personer med chefsbefattning tar in de synpunkter som har påpekats och gör en prioritering av det som behöver åtgärdas. Nedanför listas förslag på åtgärder för ett förbättrat kvalitetsarbete i monteringshallen.

    1. Tillsätt en resurs som jobbar aktivt med förbättrings- och kvalitetsfrågor (förbättringssamordnare/ledare).

    2. Börja med pilotgrupp/avdelning som får utbildning i kvalitetsmetoder och verktyg parallellt med förbättringsarbetet.

    3. Informera och utbilda personalen i grunderna inom kvalitet för att få ett gemensamt språk

    4. Våga genomföra förändringar.

    5. Börja med att åtgärda saker som ger tydliga förbättringar med hjälp av 5S

    6. Förbättra Baan-systemet så att det går att spara felorsaker

    Background: The purpose of the safety stock is to compensate customers uncertain forecasts. The task of operations is to be able to cover up customers fluctuations in demand. By being able to maintain a stable and competition strong delivery performance results in a safety stock to be used, however, it entails tied-up capital. The case the company has an ambition to produce larger quantities and then store it on an external warehouse that the authors have chosen to call the safety stock.  

    Purpose: The problem of actual demand is that research questions usually take into account normal demand. By trying to fill the knowledge gap, we arrive at this purpose. The purpose is to investigate how actual demand influences the design of stock layout in order to achieve the desired delivery reliability.

    Method: To be able to answer the purpose and our questions, an abductive approach has been used where theory collection has taken place from literature and articles while empirical data is collected from the case company Smurfit Kappa. During the collection of empiricism, interviews and observations have been carried out. The collected findings have been discussed with the theory to answer the purpose and questions and lead to our conclusions.

    Findings: In the current situation, the case produces the company only against client orders and that there are no products in stock. This will result in delivery times of between 8 – 9 weeks and delivery security. An existing surface is available today to create a safety layer, there is also the possibility of a larger space if desired.

    Conclusion: With a safety stock, the case company will be able to deliver the actual demand while reducing its delivery times and increasing delivery reliability.

    Digital innovation hubs (DIHs) are a strategic means to drive European Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) digital transition. The European Commission has envisioned four main functions characterizing DIHs' service portfolios (“Test before invest”; “Support to find investments”; “Innovation eco-system and networking”; and “Skills and training”). However, DIHs target different functions, e.g. focusing on helping launch novel digital technologies to market, or directing investment opportunities. DIHs are also at different maturity levels, interact with different actors and exist in regions with different conditions for innovation. There might not be an equal need for all four functions, and they might not be equally well served. This study aims to explore and derive implications for the deployment of the four main functions by DIHs. It builds on the activities of DIHs involved in the DIH initiative through several innovation actions, including FED4SAE and HUBCAP.

    Abstract [en]

    New strategies to improve neuron coupling to neuroelectronic implants are needed. In particular, to maintain functional coupling between implant and neurons, foreign body response like encapsulation must me minimized. Apart from modifying materials to mitigate encapsulation it has been shown that with extremely thin structures, encapsulation will be less pronounced. We here utilize wire electrochemical transistors (WECTs) using conducting polymer coated fibers. Monofilaments down to 10 μm can be successfully coated and weaved into complex networks with built in logic functions, so called textile logic. Such systems can control signal patterns at a large number of electrode terminals from a few addressing fibres. Not only is fibre size in the range where less encapsulation is expected but textiles are known to make successful implants because of their soft and flexible mechanical properties. Further, textile fabrication provides versatility and even three dimensional networks are possible. Three possible architectures for neuroelectronic systems are discussed. WECTs are sensitive to dehydration and materials for better durability or improved encapsulation is needed for stable performance in biological environments.

    Biocompatibility of PEDOT/biomolecular composites intended for neural communication electrodesManuscript (Other (popular science, discussion, etc.))
    Abstract [en]

    Electrodes of the conjugated polymer poly(3,4-ethylene dioxythiophene) (PEDOT) have been shown to possess very attractive electrochemical properties for functional electrical stimulation (FES) or recording in the nervous system. Biomolecules already present in nervous tissue, added as counter ions in PEDOT electropolymerisation, could be a route to further improve the biomaterial properties of PEDOT, eliminating the need of surfactant counter ions like docedyl benzene sulphonate (DBS) or polystyrene sulphonate (PSS) in the polymerisation process. Such PEDOT/biomolecular composites using heparin, or hyaluronic acid, have been electrochemically investigated in a previous study and have been shown to retain the attractive electrochemical properties already proven for PEDOT:PSS.

     

    The aim of the present study is to evaluate biocompatibility of these PEDOT/biomolecular composites in vitro and also evaluate PEDOT:heparin biocompatibility in cortical tissue in vivo. Hereby, we also aim to identify a suitable test protocol, that can be used in future evaluations when further material developments are made.

     

    Material toxicity was first tested on cell lines, both through a standardised agarose overlay assay on L929 fibroblasts, and through elution tests on human neuroblastoma SH-SY5Y cells. Subsequently, a biocompatibility in vivo test was performed using PEDOT:heparin coated platinum probes implanted in the cerebral cortex of Sprague-Dawley rats. Tissue was collected at three weeks and six weeks of implantation and evaluated by immunohistochemistry.

     

    No cytotoxic response was seen to any of the PEDOT:biomolecular composites tested here. Furthermore, elution tests were found to be a practical and effective way of screening materials for toxicity and had a clear advantage over the agarose overlay assay, which was difficult to apply on other cell types than fibroblasts. Elution tests would therefore be recommendable as a screening method, at all stages of material development. In the in vivo tests, the stiffness of the platinum substrate was a significant problem, and extensive glial scarring was seen in most cases irrespective of implant material. However, quantification of immunological response through distance measurements from implant site to closest neuron, and counting of macrophage densities in proximity to polymer surface, was comparable to those of platinum controls. These results indicate that PEDOT:heparin surfaces were as compatible with cortical tissue as pure platinum controls.

    This study has been carried out within the field of industrial technology and further provides suggestions for sustainable improvement for a Swedish company that produces ice cream, Gute Glass, located in Visby Gotland. Sustainability development is a fundamental area and also forms the basis for the work of developing the improvement proposal for the study and the company in question, in which sustainable development is an assumed global goal that all countries must work for and which can further be defined as "Development that meets today's needs without risking the opportunity for future generations to meet their needs'' (Gröndahl and Svanström, 2010, p. 32). Plant-based diets are something that benefits the sustainable development in relation to animal-based diets and these areas and the impact they have on the environment is the basis for the improvement proposal.

    In this report an evaluation of current evaluation methods at Volvo CE Service School, which further educates technicians, will be presented. Data from observation and interviews, focusing on constructive alignment and course evaluations is analyzed. It turned out to be inadequate constructive alignment and course evaluations do not provide sufficient information. Through the development of the constructive alignment and by using well-formulated learning outcomes the technicians learning should be enhanced. Also the design of the course evaluation with questions that examines learning factors should contribute to development of the training.

    The usage of artificial intelligence in banking is an important theme within entrepreneurial research. The purpose of the study was to analyse the motivations, challenges and opportunities for Swedish banking institutes to implement artificial intelligence based solutions into their customer service process. The research is based on a case study of the Swedish banking institute Swedbank AB, who introduced an AI based virtual assistant (Nina) to deal with customer requests. For the qualitative study, interviews with Swedish banking customer and experts were conducted. Further, to understand the managerial motivations of Swedbank, a theory of Moore (2008) regarding innovation management was applied. The findings display that Nina improved the service spectrum of Swedbank with the potential of decreasing costs, while maintaining customer satisfaction. Further, the results displayed a high acceptance of new technologies from the customer perspective. This provides the foundation for Swedbank to introduce further artificial intelligence based services. Banking institutes and other service oriented organisations with high customer interaction can use the implications of the thesis when considering to more effectively handle customer requests.

    There are still too many households in Sweden that use mostly incandescent light for lighting, using incandescent or halogen bulbs. This causes a substantial part of the unnecessary surplus of carbon-dioxide that is one of the reasons for global warming. Therefore, this degree project aims to promote a greener environment by studying and paying attention to factors that have an influence in the lighting context.

    The purpose of this degree project is to gain a better understanding of how the LED light is experienced in a home environment. The work will show how LED light source's current quality is evaluated based on individual room experiences, and if additional quality improvements are needed. The objective is to turn the public's attitude in a more positive direction where LED can contribute to a more ecologically sustainable environment.

    To investigate how LEDs are perceived in home environments an experimental study was performed which was based on the following research questions: How is LED light quality experienced compared to halogen light, how is personal wellbeing perceived in relationship to halogen and LED light, how are room experience and room character affected if halogen light is replaced by LED light in a home environment and are there any differences in these experiences between lighting designers and non lighting designers?

    Two identical test-rooms were used. They were identical in size, interior design and lighting design. Halogen bulbs were used in one room and LED lights were used in the other room. A survey was used to get answers to the questions above. The results have been analyzed and detailed room analysis was also made.

    The results showed that the light, regardless of light-source, influenced the participant's well-being and their room experience in different ways, depending on the occupational group they belonged to. It was also found that the difference in quality of light between halogen light and LED light is no longer significant. The presently available LED lights are improving and are worthy replacements for incandescent and halogen lamps.

    Abstract [en]

    Information Technology has enabled the increase of virtual business particularly towards mental health. Most health institutions have adopted using the internet to aid users get much needed help from different geographical areas. With the increase in availability of the internet, applications and websites in plenty have sprouted up due to this factor; data usage and that generated has in turn also increased carrying along with its challenges towards the data privacy of consumers’ information in electronic mental health inclusive of third party access to user data. Based on the literature review, evidence of data sharing to third parties and weak privacy policies from the e-mental health applications is illustrated, alongside its challenges and some solutions towards ensuring the privacy of user information. This area has also illustrated the different governing data privacy policies in United Kingdom both before and post-Brexit. The purpose of this thesis is to assess how the present data handling techniques are affecting user data, while citing the positive and negative outcomes of using these platforms inclusive of the relevant future recommendations towards the best practices towards ensuring data privacy of user information in electronic-mental health services.

    Transaktioner på nätet har ökat drastiskt och till följd av detta har en stor efterfrågan inommikrotransaktioner för företag och organisationer uppkommit. Forskning inom detta områdehar visat att mikrotransaktioner kan effektivisera allt i vardagen, så som hur informationöverförs och att den kan utnyttjas i marknaden för att skapa fler affärsmöjligheter. Dennauppsats undersöker mikrotransaktioners egenskaper, funktioner och diskuterar deraseventuella användning i nutida transaktionssystem. Undersökningen tar upp varför företag villha användning av transaktionssystemet och vilka möjligheter som kan uppstå med tekniken.För att finna en allmän förståelse om tekniken genomfördes litteraturgenomgång som bas ochen kvalitativ intervjuundersökning hos företag som överväger att använda tekniken ochföretag som utvecklar plattformar för tekniken. Med intervjuerna undersöktes om det varmöjligt att använda sig av mikrotransaktioner och hur dagens utveckling ser ut.Slutsatserna av undersökningen blev att mikrotransaktioner går att användas i små mängder,men tekniken behöver bli mer utvecklad för att företag och organisationer skall kunnaacceptera tekniken.

    Abstract [en]

    The consumption of textiles is increasing more and more, meanwhile there are vigorous efforts both from the textile industry and controlling companies to promote sustainable consumption. A significant amount of textiles discarded in household waste, which is an untapped resource that should be taken advantage of. Two methods to use textile waste is to reuse and recycling it. The reuses of textile materials are today well developed in Sweden, however, there are currently no existing system for recycling textiles.

    The purpose of this study is to investigate Borås Stad’s textile waste and the textile recycling. The reason I chose Borås is because the city has an old history in the Swedish textile industry and today strives to be in top of the textile innovations. The methods being used in this study are a literature studies and a interview.

    Borås Stad actively works to encourage the citizens to reuse and recycle their textile waste. The opportunity to recycle textiles is today only in the special collecting boxes. Borås Stad has nowadays, because of size- and economical aspects, not an own developed recycle system for textile waste.

    The study aims to provide information on efficiency opportunities on SCA's northbound cassettes. It has been made by examining the capacity utilization rate on the northbound cassettes on SCA's vessels for a period of two weeks. The cargo loaded in the ports of Rotterdam and Sheerness consists of external cargo of varying shape. The cargo is shipped northbound to Holmsund and Sundsvall. Measurements have been made on the cargo to the final destinations Sundsvall, Holmsund and Finland. The measurements have been used in a mathematical optimization model created to optimize the loading of the cassettes. The model is based on placing boxes in a grid where the boxes that are placed representing the cargo and the grids representing the cassettes. The aim of the model is to reduce the number of cassettes and thereby increase the capacity utilization rate. The study resulted in an increase in capacity utilization rate for both area and volume to all destinations. The overall improvement for all cassettes examined resulted in an increase in the area capacity utilization rate by 9.02 percentage points and 5.72 percentage points for the volume capacity utilization rate. It also resulted in a decrease of 22 cassettes in total on the four voyages that were examined which indicate that there are opportunities to improve the capacity utilization rate. The study also shows that the model can be used as a basis for similar problems.

    Abstract [en]

    Today, many small aerodromes have a hard time surviving economically, and amongst the largest cost is air traffic control. Airlines are cutting costs where they can, and many times this affects the aerodromes as well, e.g. when airlines decide to park remotely instead of at the gate. The project called Remotely Operated Towers, initiated by SESAR and run by Saab and LFV, is aiming to address this problem. The project revolves around remotely providing ATS to aerodromes where it is deemed suitable. A big challenge in this project is how to assign aerodromes to remote tower modules in the remote control centre. There are many ways to do this, but there is only a few ways to do it to achieve the least amount of modules. This thesis aims to find an optimal solution to the challenge mentioned above. The thesis resulted in a model where the user can provide the input of choice, i.e. aerodromes with associated ATS operating hours and movements, for a specific period – and receive the assignment schedule for the modules, saying exactly which aerodrome are to be controlled by which module at what time.

    Det är vanligt att Svenska företag har leveranssäkerhetskrav på sina underleverantörer. Det är normalt att företag får problem att leverera varorna i tid till sina kunder ibland, vilket kan medföra stor ekonomisk förlust för företaget. Denna rapport är resultatet av ett examensarbete vid Mälardalens Högskola som utförts på uppdrag av International Aluminium Casting AB i Eskilstuna.Syftet med denna rapport är att se över IAC:s fabrik i Eskilstuna ute på Vilsta, för att kartlägga deras tillverkningsprocess och identifiera problemområden i tillverkningen som kan ha direkta effekter på leveranssäkerheten.För att uppnå syftet med arbetet utfördes först en litteraturstudie inom området effektiv produktion, följt av en empirisk studie som utfördes i fabriken på företaget. Detta ger arbetet en hög betryggande anknytning om hur verkligheten ser ut och ger innehållet en bekräftelse emot teorin inom området. En noggrann nulägesbeskrivning utfördes för att få en konkret bild över hur tillverkningsprocessen gick till och för att kunna se vart i processen det finns problem, vilket skulle kunna påverka företagets förmåga att leverera sina varor i tid till kunden. Arbetet resulterar till sist i tre koncept som är förslag på hur företaget skulle kunna öka sin leveranssäkerhet och få en effektivare tillverkningsprocess.En problemidentifiering genomfördes för att se över vart företaget skulle kunna tänkas rikta sina framtida utvecklingsmöjligheter för effektivisera sin tillverkning för att få en starkare leveranssäkerhet. Problemidentifieringen utfördes i flera steg, där företaget ensamma först fick identifiera sin syn på vilka problem dem hade, följt av författarnas uppfattningar baserade på intervjuer och empiriska studier. Till sist intervjuades externa konsulter, varav en fick göra studiebesök på företaget för att få en professionell validering av företaget och stötta upp föregående uttalande. Detta resulterade i många uppfattningar och synvinklar på saker som företaget kan utveckla och växa av.Rapporten avslutas med en diskussion om resultatet och vilka studier som inte hanns med och förslag på områden av framtida utveckling av detta arbete.

    The classical dynamic lot size problem without backlogging is usually solved with the aid of various heuristics. Most heuristics are sequential, i.e. the demand is considered period for period, and a decision whether to include the demand in a certain period in the preceding batch is taken without regarding the future demand. Recently, it has been shown how to design a sequential lot sizing rule that will optimize the average performance, provided that a typical demand looks like a sequence of independent and identically distributed random numbers. The purpose of this paper is to evaluate if and how this methodology can be implemented in practice. The new lot sizing techniques are evaluated in a simulation study for different types of demand.

    Slack can act as a double-edged sword. While it can buffer against environmental threats to help ensure business continuity, slack canalso be costly and reduce profitability. In this study, we focus on operational slack, the form related to the firm’s production processes. We investigate the role of operational slack on firm survival during its venture stage, when its survival is significantly challenged by environmental threats. Specifically, we explore how change in three types of environmental uncertainty, namely dynamism, complexity and lack of munificence affect the relationship between operational slack and venture survival. Results suggest that with increase inenvironmental uncertainty, operational slack lowers the likelihood of venture failure.

    BRP+ is a framework created to measure Swedish regional development from a quality of life and sustainability perspective. BRP + is compiled of several thematic areas which respectively include numerous aspects and indicators. To study how the regions have developed over time BRP+ uses an index year five years back in time as reference point. The first BRP+ composite index was released in 2018. This thesis is a decision-analytic review of the aggregation of aspects and indicators in BRP+. Focus lies on how the increase or decrease within one indicator corresponds to the increase or decrease within another indicator and the consequences of changing the reference year used when assessing development over time. This review has been limited to study the thematic area of Civic Engagement and Democratic Participation. The results show that the construction of BRP+ in conjunction with a change of reference year for assessing development over time has an impact on how the increase or decrease within one indicator is valued in relation to the increase or decrease within another indicator and leads to a rank reversal issue. Therefore, decision-makers may find a somewhat limited support from BRP+.

    Allt fler verksamheter med mål att skapa samhällspositiva värden har på grund av ökad konkurrens behövt frångå en finansieringsmodell som bestått av bidrag och donationer till att omfamna en mer affärsliknande finansieringsmodell. Ett sätt att i större utsträckning skapa inkomstkällor som de själva kan styra över är att utveckla verksamhetens affärsmodell (Ko & Liu, 2020). 

    Samtidigt som det vuxit fram ett behov av ekonomisk utveckling inom den ideella sektorn har nya digitala teknologier förändrat hittills beprövade sätt att göra affärer (Nahrkhalaji et al., 2018; Volberda et al., 2021). Många verksamheter påbörjar en digital transformation, men flertalet upplever att slutresultatet inte medför den måluppfyllnad som är önskvärd (Volberda et al., 2021).Det finns nämligen risker med att implementera en affärsmodell med fokus på digitala teknologier utan att affärsmodellen först utvärderats i tillräcklig omfattning, till exempel att den digitala affärsmodellen utformas utan att förstå det faktiska kundvärdet den ska leverera, att utökad nytta utlovas utan att till fullo ha implementerat nödvändig organisatorisk infrastruktur eller kompetens, att den digitala möjligheten omfamnas utan att förstå hur vinst- eller kostnadsstrukturen fungerar (Linde et al., 2020).

    Med bakgrund i avsaknaden av ett ramverk för utvärdering av digitala affärsmodells-möjligheter gällande verksamheter som söker kombinera samhällspositiva värden och en mer affärsliknande finansieringsmodell har denna kollaborativa studie genomförts. Syftet har varit att undersöka i vilken omfattning Linde et al., (2020) ramverk för utvärdering av digitala affärsmodellsmöjligheter är applicerbart för verksamheter som söker kombinera samhällspositiva värden och en mer affärsliknande finansieringsmodell. Studien har även haft som syfte att undersöka vilka eventuella andra frågeställningar än de som finns i Linde et al., (2020) skulle behöva formuleras avseende ett ramverk anpassat till den här typen av verksamhet. 

    Med utgångspunkt i Ribeiro et al., (2021) Digital Social Innovation Strategy Canvas har en digital produktstrategi och en digital affärsmodellsmöjlighet formulerats. Affärs-modellsmöjligheten har sedan utvärderats utifrån Linde et al., (2020) ramverk för utvärdering av digitala affärsmodellsmöjligheter. 

    Resultatet visar på den utmaning som samhällsvärde som värdeerbjudande kan vara. Där det nödvändigtvis inte är den grupp som omfattas av samhällsbehovet som är den faktiska kunden i sammanhanget (den som betalar för att samhällsbehovet ska åtgärdas). Vid produktstrategiformulering och vid utformning av ett ramverk för utvärdering av den här typen av verksamhet blir det därför viktigt att nyansera målgruppsarbetet i syfte att särskilja mellan betalare, användare (deltagare) och de som har nytta av att samhällsbehovet tillgodoses. Annars är risken att en digital affärsmodellsmöjlighet formuleras där inkomstströmmarna blir lidande eller helt uteblir.

    University-industry collaborations (UICs) have been hailed as key for Sweden's innovativeness and economic growth. Similarly, building research and innovation policies for the promotion of collaboration between universities and industry have become a cornerstone for many other European countries.

    In academic literature there has been an emphasis on efficiency, facilitation, effects and values obtained in UICs. They have been widely studied, both in terms of the reasons why they are formed, their structure and the effects they create, but not much in terms of how they work on a daily basis. There is less attention in the literature to analyse or problematise how UIC work is carried out when a connection has already been formed or is repeatedly enacted. Additionally, there is also a lack of studies looking at small firms UICs. Through identifying a lack of perspective in the UIC literature this thesis builds on the recent developments in practice theory in addressing some of the gaps found. It thus analyses these collaborations from a perspective not present in the literature in pursuit of how UICs are carried out.

    Through four embedded case studies between small enterprises and university researchers the thesis questions some of the assumptions made in the UIC literature and policy documents. First of all, through the practice theory lens, the thesis shows how the creation of a node/linchpin, a boundary object or a broker, between university and industry is instrumental in enabling collaboration work to take place. Secondly, being able to work together successfully does not equal outcomes sought after by policy organisations. Nevertheless, a general conclusion is that there were valuable outcomes for both the companies and the researchers, confirming previous research on UICs. But, these benefits were often difficult to put into clear numbers or metrics and appeared only after a very long time.

    The thesis argues that policy (and associated organisations) should promote the connection between a research site/practices and a company site/practices rather than pushing for a joint practice. In such a way UICs can be valuable for both researchers and companies.

    Every collaboration stands on a foundation of mutual trust. This is a pre-requisite for any information sharing as well as the basis to successfully carry out collaborative tasks. This article presents the use case of Open Digital Lab 4you, a digitized laboratory environment, and identifies relevant trust factors based on a literature review and action-based research. In this paper stakeholders’ needs and requirements are discussed and these are linked to several, critical aspects of trust when sharing resources among public institutions.

    The purpose of this assignment was to analyse the visibility problems that occur for the operator of Volvos A40 hauler and generate suggestions for improvement. A modified product development process based on Ullmans model was used to create basic requirements for the solution and generate concepts with said requirements. The concepts were then evaluated and the highest scoring concept, which included a camera, was chosen to develop. The results also include calculations of the cameras desired focal length and object range, to achieve the defined field of view. An analysis of the result and project in general are provided after that, as well as the conclusions and recommendations for further research.

    Globalization allows companies to reach a larger customer base and to focus on niche markets, driving specialization. Conversely, it also lets customers choose from a wider array of options on any given market, which all together leads to increased competition. Such global scale competition is straining profitability and urges companies to innovate both strategy and operations in search of competitive advantages. The ensuing increased rate of change has placed an emphasis on achieving flexibility to ensure alignment with market needs, with companies successful in quick modifications flourishing even in face of unpredictable and unceasing turbulence. The trend toward increasing turbulence is acutely experienced by the automotive industry. Due to the commoditization of hardware in light of digitalization, the automotive industry is undergoing a shift in profitability toward software. The adaptation of strategy to the market is vital to survival, which in turn means that the operationalization of the strategy is crucial. One way to actualize the strategy is through project portfolio management (PPM). As corporate strategy and project portfolios are tightly connected, PPM is essential to implementing the strategy. It is of interest to study the flexible qualities of PPM in an individual industry moving from stable to turbulent, in order to gain insight into the challenges of that industry. The flexible properties of PPM in the automotive industry is thus of utmost importance to the survival of companies. The built-in flexibility of PPM is however not always enough and there is an increasing interest in agile PPM (APPM). So far, there is little advancement on the topic of APPM, and the need for further understanding is obvious with consideration to recent market developments, especially in the automotive industry. This thesis has employed a single case study to understand what challenges traditional companies in the automotive industry face when trying to become more agile in their project portfolio management in order to align their organization around agile practices on the team level and increase responsiveness to external changes. Adopting an abductive approach, empirical data was collected using interviews, observations, documents as well as a survey. The results of this study are twofold. Firstly, an exhaustive mapping of a major automotive company’s PPM process is presented. Secondly, this mapping is utilized to establish what PPM processes could be made more agile and what the main challenges are.

    Räddningstjänstens förmåga vid IVPA (i väntan på ambulans): En studie om räddningstjänstens förmåga att utföra IVPA-uppdrag2020Independent thesis Basic level (professional degree), 210 HE creditsStudent thesis

    När en person drabbas av ett plötsligt akut sjukdomsfall ställer vi krav på att samhället ska reagera och hjälpa den som är i behov av hjälp. Personen som är drabbad upplever en otrygghet och vill ha hjälp så fort som möjligt. Att ge den hjälpen åligger Sveriges regioner enligt hälso- och sjukvårdslagen. Med en allt mer centraliserad sjukvård och en trend som visar att väntetiden på en ambulans blir allt längre krävs en samverkan mellan samhällets trygghetsskapande och livräddande funktioner.

    Problematiken med denna samverkan mellan räddningstjänst och ambulanssjukvården när det handlar om hälso-och sjukvård är sedan tidigare väl känd. Svenska Kommunförbundet och Landstingsförbundet, numera Sveriges Kommuner och Regioner, kom ut med en rapport år 2001 där detta undersöktes. Efter rapporten har lagändringar genomfört för att förenkla samverkan och för att möjliggöra avtal som innebär att räddningstjänsten utför hälso-och sjukvårdsinsatser i väntan på ambulans.

    I Örebro län finns ett avtal mellan Region Örebro län och Nerikes Brandkår som innebär att räddningstjänsten larmas till misstänkta hjärtstopp där det finns en bedömd tidsvinst i att larma räddningstjänsten. Resultatet visar att räddningstjänsten larmades tillsammans med ambulans vid 111 av 389 misstänka hjärtstopp under 2018, vilket motsvara ca 28,5 procent av fallen. Vid dessa gemensamma utlarmningar var räddningstjänsten enligt medianvärdet 9 minuter före ambulansen till den drabbade. Medicinska studier visar att chansen att få igång ett hjärtstopp minskar med 10 procent för varje minut.

    Ambulanssjukvårdens tillgänglighet har under senaste tiden varit föremål för medial uppmärksamhet i och med en ökad belastning på verksamheten. Resultatet i studien påvisar en markant högre belastning för ambulanssjukvården än hos Nerikes Brandkår. Av Nerikes Brandkår totala antal uppdrag utgjorde IVPA ca 3,8 procent under 2018.

    Det finns flera andra sjukdomsfall där tiden spelar en avgörande roll för utgången hos den drabbade. Två av dessa sjukdomsfall, livshotande blödning och luftvägshinder, undersöktes vad det gäller omfattning i länet samt huruvida räddningstjänsten skulle kunna genomföra en första insats i väntan på ambulans vid dessa sjukdomsfall. Om räddningstjänsten även skulle larmas på 28,5 procent av alla larm om livshotande blödning och luftvägshinder och oförändrat på misstänkt hjärtstopp skulle andelen IVPA öka från dagens 3,8 till 4,9 procent. Det skulle även innebära en total ökning av antal larm till räddningstjänsten med 1,1 procent, eller cirka 32 larm per år i hela Nerikes Brandkår. Räddningstjänstens tillgänglighet och förmåga att göra snabba potentiellt livräddande insatser i väntan på ambulans bör tas till vara av regionen. Ambulanssjukvården och räddningstjänsten har ett flertal gemensamma beröringspunkter där en av dem är att skapa trygghet och rädda liv.

    Abstract [en]

    Objective. Simulation based training with full-size mannequins is a prominent means of training within the healthcare sector. Prehospital missions include all parts of the healthcare process which take place before a patient is handed over to the receiving hospital. This implies that the context for prehospital care is varied and potentially challenging or dangerous in several ways. In this article we present a study which explores immersion and performance by emergency medical services (EMS) professionals in in a training situation which takes the specifics of prehospital interventions into account.

    Methods. The study was carried out as a field experiment at an ambulance unit. The experiment was designed to compare the differences between two types of medical scenarios: basic and contextualized. We analyzed the levels of immersion throughout the scenarios and then team performance was evaluated by independent experts. Both analyses were made by observing video recordings from multiple camera angles with a custom made analysis tool.

    Results. Our results show that the contextualization of a medical scenario increases both immersion as measured by the Immersion Score Rating Instrument (ISRI) and team performance as measured by the Global Rating Scale (GRS). The overall ISRI score was higher in the contextualized condition as compared to the basic condition, with an average team wise difference of 2.94 (sd = 1.45). This difference is significant using a paired, two-tailed t-test (p<.001). The GRS score was higher for overall clinical performance in the contextualized scenario with an average team wise difference of 0.83 (sd = 0.83, p=.005).

    Conclusions. Full-size mannequin simulation based training for EMS professionals may be enhanced by contextualizing the medical scenarios. The main benefits are that the contextualized scenarios better take prehospital medical challenges into account and allow participants to perform better.

    Sweden has a long tradition of process improvements, productivity increments, waste reduction in manufacturing, continuing a mode of industrialization that helped achieve prosperity. With growing urban centers, mechanization of agriculture, outsourcings by manufacturing and the public sector with subsequent acquisitions, large service firms have appeared in an ever-growing service sector. Some firms with a previously simple operation have become employers of hundreds of thousands of people in what can be described as a Nordic phenomenon in its origin when looking at the roots of the largest firms.

    With this development in mind, the aim of the thesis is to explore the factors that can be found in the case study of industrialization of services in Nordic based firms. Using an abductive approach and mixed methods, the theoretical focus has been on the organization, routines, and knowledge. The data used in this thesis originates from three embedded contexts ranging from power and telecom infrastructural services, facility management, and a payment service provider. Summarily, the research questions touch upon (1) tacit knowledge and its transfer; (2) technology adoption; and (3) the grander implications of technology and industrialization in services.

    The thesis has four main contributions. First, the first paper provides a unique empirical insight into firms that rarely see any academic attention, a domain dominated by craftmanship to some degree, and with that an environment saturated with tacit knowledge. Secondly, the results indicate that while tacit knowledge is a significant part of service firms, recent technological advancement can overcome difficulties of transferring certain somatic aspects it. Capturing tacit knowledge digitally and transforming it into rich data, turns it into a crystallized artifact that is separated from time and space. High bandwidth enables the transfer of these crystallized artifacts of rich data, to any place, at any time. Thirdly, looking at the adoption of automation technology in various firms, it becomes clear that firm leadership has the pivotal role when it comes to technology adoption in contrast to the user. Depending on firm characteristics the readiness varies. Furthermore, technology itself may provide more opportunities than it originally intended. However, there are further dimensions that come into play such as network effects. Finally, the thesis can summate that technology has an incredible importance in industrializing services, but also posits that it may change the concept of what services truly are.

    For practitioners it is important to appreciate that technology has an increasingly important role in Services. Service firms that are geographically dispersed, or plan to become so via growth, do not necessarily need to be constrained in terms of knowledge transfer. However, adoption of technology requires a deliberate strategy from an enabling and proactive senior leadership.
