Testing the waters: Translating MNE technology in a base-of-the-pyramid context2021In: Journal of Cleaner Production, ISSN 0959-6526, E-ISSN 1879-1786, Vol. 281, article id 125195Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Multinational enterprises (MNEs) face significant challenges when applying their technologies in baseof-the-pyramid (BoP) contexts. This paper explores the mobilization of MNE technologies and local actors in the case of Grundfos LIFELINK and deploys an actor-network theory (ANT) translation framework to unravel immersion processes of MNE technologies in local BoP contexts. The study adopts a longitudinal single-case design to analyze the introduction of MNE pump technology, which provides clean water in Kenyan rural villages. The findings show that a lack of understanding of the local BoP context leads to failure in mobilizing relevant actors for the intended water-provision network and, subsequently, to an initial rejection of the technology. By focusing more on the local actors and by mobilizing additional actors, the MNE technology is successfully translated into the BoP context-albeit without the intended creation of MNE value. The paper contributes to the understanding of how MNEs can achieve technology development in BoP contexts, as well as to the evolution of BoP approaches.

Corporate sustainable brand identity work and network embeddedness: Learnings from Better Place (2007-2013)2023In: Industrial Marketing Management, ISSN 0019-8501, E-ISSN 1873-2062, Vol. 115, p. 526-538Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The growing attention to the climate crisis in today's business environment, increases the need for B2B firms to integrate corporate sustainable branding activities in stakeholder interactions. Motivated by a continuous push for market reforms to promote a sustainability agenda for B2B firms, this research uses an intensive single case study design to showcase how corporate sustainable brand identity work is carried out in B2B firms and how business network embeddedness affects this work. We describe how Petter Place, a company that attempted to introduce a radically new way of providing charging for electric cars, provides an opportunity to outline and discuss corporate sustainable brand identity work in B2B networks. We identify how corporate sustainable brand identity work is carried out through different sub-processes, such as building corporate sustainable brand identity and awareness, network mobilizing, and ongoing actor commitment and coalignment, and how network embeddedness facilitates and restricts these processes in different ways.

Dyadic Business Relationships Within a Business Network Context1994In: Journal of Marketing, Vol. 58, no October, p. 1-15Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

In business-to-business settings, dyadic relationships between firms are of paramount interest. Recent developments in business practice strongly suggest that to understand these business relationships, greater attention must be directed to the embedded context within which dyadic business relationships take place. The authors provide a means for understanding the connectedness of these relationships. They then conduct a substantive validity assessment to furnish some empirical support that the constructs they propose are sufficiently well delineated and to generate some suggested measures for them. They conclude with a prospectus for research on business relationships within business networks.

Abstract of Dreams and Seeds book

The role of universities is changing, expanding from being purely education and research institutions towards one of being active partners in local and regional urban development. As incubators for knowledge development, critical thinking, and innovations, universities and campuses are becoming increasingly important for identifying, designing, and implementing pathways to sustainable urban development. The project Live Baltic Campus has explored how university campuses can serve as local living labs and guides for new planning and design approaches. The project has aimed to build capacity in urban planning and design to harness the potential of changing social, ecological and financial contexts. Six higher education institutes in cities around the Central Baltic area have collaborated to utilise participatory design methods in developing their local campuses, and to share the results on their findings. Campus development, much like urban planning in general, relates to the concepts of dreams and seeds: visions of the future, and a continuous flow of, often small, actions and decisions required for bringing the visions into reality. This book is a compilation of the insights, perspectives and practical examples encountered and produced during the two-year joint exploration to find the ingredients and the correct local measurements for sustainable urban campuses.

Tensions in Transdisciplinary Research: A study of a climate research group2023Doctoral thesis, monograph (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

In a time of sustainability predicaments and ‘grand challenges’, transdisciplinarity has been put forward as an approach through which researchers can engage with societal transformation for a better world. This study examines tensions that arise in the on-the-ground efforts of researchers to establish and manage a transdisciplinary research group within a Norwegian university. Tensions have been of interest in both studies of science and studies of organizations. Scholars have inquired into the ways in which tensions between interrelated, divergent demands influence the work of scientific knowledge production and organizational life. Transdisciplinary research groups, centers and institutes are proliferating, yet studies of the tensions and challenges they face at the micro-level remain nascent. Drawing on intermittent fieldwork over a two-year period, this dissertation analyses a local case in which climate and energy researchers took a transdisciplinary approach in establishing a “societally engaged” research group and research center in a social sciences department. Key questions are: which tensions do they encounter? How do they respond to them?

The study makes use of concepts on tensions and paradox developed in organization and management studies to inform discussions on challenges in inter- and trans-disciplinary research in practice. The case study identifies, illustrates, and analyses several tensions salient for researchers: between the need for both consolidation and interrelation; between the need to grow and formalise the group while also maintaining its closeness and values; between ideas of researchers’ relationship to societal change as both distant and engaged; and between the need to maintain academic autonomy while providing usefulness to non-academic actors. Various responses to these tensions are identified and explored, including defending against, and actively embracing them. The findings allow for rethinking transdiscipclinary research in practice, with implications for research managers, practitioners, and policy makers.

Företagsprofiler på sociala medier- till vilken nytta för konsumenterna?: En studie om hur företagsprofiler på sociala medier används och värdesätts ur ett konsumentperspektiv.2012Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Svenska mikroföretags internationaliseringsprocess2016Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

Companies that actively work on their customer relationships have great opportunities to increase their revenues. By retaining 5% of their customers, a company's revenues can increase by almost 100%. Two factors that impact customer relationships are loyalty and trust, and the magnitude of these factors has an impact on how lucrative the customer relationships can be. In physical stores, these two factors can be influenced by environmental impressions or the behavior of staff. But what do companies that do not have a physical store do, if the company is an e-commerce company and only has a website?

User Experience, UX, is something that is actively used in the IT sector and is an area that is always taken into account when designing websites. It serves as guidelines for the creators of the website, with the goal of maximizing the experience for visitors. Within the concept of UX, there are seven parts where each part represents a specific focus during the development of a website. The two theoretically strongest parts of UX are design and usability.

The purpose of this essay was to investigate how design and usability affect trust in customer relationships. Furthermore, it was investigated which of the factors design and usability companies should prioritize to maximize trust towards the customer. The study is a quantitative study where data collection was done through a constructed web survey distributed on various social platforms. To answer the research question, statistical measures such as median, mean values and Wilcoxon's rank-sum test were used in the analysis.

The result obtained suggests that both factors, design and usability, have a positive impact on trust in the company. It is established that all factors within these areas have a direct impact on trust, but to varying degrees. Furthermore, the result shows that companies should initially prioritize design on the website, as the design creates security through visual stimuli at the first visit to the website, which the trust is based on. Once the design has succeeded in creating this fundamental security, usability is the factor that companies should prioritize the most, as this is what customers consider most important for trust when visual stimuli are not taken into account.

Prognostisering av konkurs: En logistisk regressionsanalys av svenska företag2009Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract

Background: A common belief among non-profit organizations is that their activities are non-taxable. It is interesting to examine the actual awareness of tax accounting, and further how it affects the individual organizations’ accounting choices. There are indications of differences between organizations concerning both the awareness and accounting practices employed.

Purpose: The purpose of this study is from an institutional perspective to examine non-profit organization’s awareness of tax accounting. Furthermore, we intend to examine how this awareness is expressed in the organizations’ accounting choices.

Theory: The theory is based on an institutional perspective that explains the behaviour of organizations. The priority lies in the formal rules and informal norms, which constitutes institutions that shape organizational behaviour. The concept of path-dependency is part of the institutional perspective and can be described as the organizations’ tendencies to follow previous courses of action.

Method: The empirical study is based on qualitative methodology, in the form of semi-structured interviews conducted with ten non-profit organizations located in Uppsala. These interviews have also been complemented by the organization’s financial reports. In addition, interviews with the Swedish Tax Agency and the National association of Sports have been conducted, which contributed with a general idea about the tax position in non-profit organizations.

Result and conclusion: The study indicates that there is a varied awareness of tax accounting amongst the organizations. Awareness of regulations increase with the size of the organization. The three largest organizations show a higher awareness compared to their smaller counterparts. As awareness increases so does the use formal rules to legitimize the accounting process. The smaller organizations, in contrast to the larger ones, tend to base their accounting decisions on their own personal notions of accounting practices. We found in this study that there is an imminent risk of the organizations with a net sale between 3 and 5 million SEK to misrepresent their taxable activity. This is due to a lack of knowledge and most errors stem from unawareness.

Abnormal avkastning vid företagsförvärv i Sverige: En kvantitativ studie som undersöker röststarka aktier, utlandsförvärv, storlek och betalningsmetod2017Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study is to further the theoretical understanding of gender harassment. I suggest an approach and a theoretical model that answers the question of how to understand and describe gender harassment both in terms of specific actions taken against an individual because of gender and the combined actions that constitute a gender harassment process. Due to the fact that gender harassment takes place in a structure and that the perpetrator needs structural support to be able to harass, the model considers existing power relationships at the workplace, i.e. how gender harassment reflects the distribution of power and structural behaviour of men and women. As my empirical material indicate aggressive behaviour and fear it is crucial to raise the issue of violence and to consider to what extent gender harassment is expressed av violence in the workplace. The empirical material contains broad-based and in-depth narratives about a kind of situation that is not well defined in the extant literature or elsewhere. It is essentially unknown whether gender harassment takes place to the same extent as sexual harassment. Even though quite a few narratives about daily working life bear witness of such situations they have remained largely undefined and little understood. In the present study, a combination of feministic organization theory about powerstructures at the workplace and violence theory is used to broaden the picture and to develop an instrument for understanding narratives about gender harassment. The results from the analysis, drawing upon material from practical gender equality work at a university and four in-depth interviews with victims of gender harassment, suggest that a combination of feministic organization theory and violence theory is fruitful for understanding the phenomenon of gender harassment. It is suggested that the proposed theoretical model offers a first but important step towards identifying and preventing gender harassment at the workplace.

Försvinner med ett klick?: En studie om vad kunder efterfrågar för att de ska bli lojala online.2012Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Post-earnings-announcement drift på Stockholmsbörsen: En studie med prisbaserad modell2020Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

How Board and Top Management Composition Affects Sustainability Performance2023Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This study investigates sustainability performance of Swedish firms through the lens of the upper echelons theory. We test how the size, average age, and proportion of gender in boards of directors (BoDs) and top management teams (TMTs), is related to sustainability performance. While BoDs have been studied in this way several times previously, no other studies, which we are aware of, study the relationship between TMTs and sustainability performance. The study follows a purely quantitative approach and is based on large and mid cap firms on the Nasdaq Stockholm exchange. The sustainability performance of firms is proxied by the ESG-score issued by Refinitiv. The study finds that the size of both BoDs and TMTs is positively and significantly related to sustainability performance. The relationship for the size of BoDs is particularly strong and significant, whereas the one for TMTs is less so. Regarding the proportion of gender, this variable was also positively and significantly related to sustainability performance, but only for BoDs. Finally, the age variable was insignificant for both BoDs and TMTs.

Sponsring är inte välgörenhet: En studie kring relationen mellan en svensk idrottsklubb och dess sponsorer2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

STRESSAD?: En studie av studenters stress utifrån arbetsrelaterad stressforskning2006Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

Managerial use of accounting information: A study on how managers use business reports at NCC2014Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

There is a need to learn more about how managers use accounting information. This thesis investigates how managers make use of business reports; as they are one of the ways managers receive information. Previous research was found to broadly correspond to four important aspects affecting how managers make use of business reports; aggregation, timeliness, flexibility and dimensions. A case study was conducted at NCC Construction. The main findings from this study are that managers have the possibility to view information in the reports at their desired level of specificity and they are not concerned about the issue of timeliness. Furthermore they are satisfied with flexibility in reports, but wish for more capabilities and do not desire non-financial information in reports. Therefore the four aspects are found to no longer be a hindrance to managers in their use of business reports as much as could be expected from previous studies. Technological developments and business practices are found to have changed managerial work. Reporting has become faster and is more accurately reflecting the real world operations, making business reports more useful to managers.

Customer Involvement in New Service Development - Organizational Implications and Challenges2015Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Course/Level: Master thesis, Strategic Marketing Management

    Authors: Daniel Andersson, Pontus Hjertqvist

    Thesis advisor: Jukka Hohenthal

Title: Customer Involvement in New Service Development: Organizational Implications and Challenges

Background: The nature of services is becoming technology-based, which implies that customers are becoming increasingly autonomous from the service firm. Understanding how to involve customers in the development process of such services as well as to recognize the challenges brought by customer involvement in this context should be seen as key issues for developing successful new services.

Research questions: RQ1: How are customers involved in the development process of technology-based services? RQ2: How do challenges brought by customer involvement impede new service development?

Purpose: The purpose of this thesis was to explore how an organization within the banking industry in Sweden involves its customers in the new service development process

Methodology: A qualitative single embedded case study strategy, combining inductive and deductive reasoning. The empirical investigation was conducted using a triangulation of secondary data and primary data collected from semi-structured interviews.

Conclusion: Customers are involved in three out of four of the fundamental phases in the development process. The findings acknowledged that a lack of formal routines and process of managing customer involvement impeded the organization to successfully involve customers in their new service development programs. As such, the findings suggests that organizations need to employ a new organizational design optimized for customer involvement in their NSD-programs, where current structures, processes, and mindsets need to be adjusted accordingly.

Keywords: New service development, customer involvement, technology-based services, organizational challenges.

    Abstract [en]

We exploit exogenous variation arising from the historical rollout of the Swedish railroad network across municipalities to identify the impacts of improved transport infrastructure on innovative activity. A network connection led to a local surge in patenting due to an increased entry and productivity of inventors. As the railroad network expanded, inventors in connected areas began to develop ideas with applications outside the local economy, which were subsequently sold to firms along the network. Our findings suggest that reductions in communication and transportation costs were an important driver of the historical emergence of a market for ideas.

The Emergence of Markets for Technology: Patent Transfers and Patenting in Sweden, 1819–19142016Doctoral thesis, monograph (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

This thesis is concerned with the emergence of markets for technology and studies the evolution of patent transfers and its determinants, patent agencies and independent versus firm patenting in Sweden during the 19th century and the turn of 20th century. It explores how and why markets for technology emerge and under what circumstances by investigating the evolution of Swedish patent legislation and the patterns of patent transfers between individuals and firms. It presents a three-pronged framework studying: structure and actors, technology and transactions.

Using a new and unique database covering every Swedish privilege and patent over the 1819–1914 period the empirical analysis reveals that although the transferability of intellectual property goes all the way back to the 18th century patent transfers did not start to increase significantly until the first modern Swedish patent law was passed in 1884. Along with the new law a market for patenting services also emerged where actors such as patent agents and the firms they founded, patent agencies, functioned as intermediaries in the market for patents and international networks of patenting. A few older patent agencies managed to create an oligopolistic setting where they introduced price controls through special interest groups.

The thesis also questions the current dichotomous classification of independent and firm patenting. The methodological contribution lies in showing that research that depend too much on patent statistics run the risk of underestimating the importance of the firm when patents granted to individuals actually cover inventive activities that has taken place inside the boundaries of firms.

Finally, the study shows that special marketplaces for the sale of patented and unpatented technology were created to help inventors find buyers and financiers for their invention and to help firms find new technology. The patent law of 1884 made it possible to trade in several submarkets of technology where the right to patent a certain invention could be bought, ideas could be financed, pending patent applications or the priority right to foreign markets could be bought and sold.

The results lend support to the research emphasizing the role of intellectual property as a disclosure and diffusion mechanism for new technology.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

This paper studies how investments in design affect the market value of firms, using European Registered Community Designs and national Swedish design rights data combined with R&D, patent and trademark data, for the period 2003–2013. This paper is the first large-scale quantitative study using industrial designs rights to measure design. Nonlinear least-squares regressions are used to investigate the association between these variables and the market value of Swedish firms. The results show that industrial designs rights have a positive and significant relationship to the market value of firms. It provides both new evidence on the effect of industrial design rights on the market value of firms and internationally comparable results for other intangible assets such as patents, trademarks and R&D. Theoretically, the paper contributes to the understanding of design knowledge and the valuation of design rights.

Patent Collaboration Networks in Sweden and Spain during the Second Industrial Revolution2019In: Industry and Innovation, ISSN 1366-2716, E-ISSN 1469-8390, Vol. 26, no 9, p. 1075-1102Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This article aims to analyse and compare the patent collaboration networks of Spain and Sweden during the Second Industrial Revolution, a key period for technological and industrial development in several economies and the distinct development paths taken by these two countries. The data used are from two new historical patent datasets for Spain and Sweden for the period 1878-1914. To study the structure of collaboration networks in both countries, we applied social network analysis methods and focused on two specific key network properties: connectivity and openness to external nodes. The results demonstrate that collaboration networks were better connected and more open to foreign influence in Sweden than in Spain. This research opens new paths for further multidisciplinary studies both on the evolution of industrial economies and on innovation networks dynamics.

    Abstract [en]

The article analyses Swedish and Finnish patent agents and their businesses at the turn of the twentieth century. Due to legal requirements, all foreign patent applications had to pass through the hands of patent agents. Despite the central role, this transnational business of technology intermediation has received only limited attention in the scholarship. The article studies the business relationships between the patent agents and their clients, and employs new datasets, which include information about all foreign patentees using a patent agent in 1860–1910. The main findings are that the transnational business relationships affected the specialisation of national patent agents, especially in Finland, where patent agents with a legal background contributed to the inflow of inventions managed by Swedish patent agents. Patent agent services also represented significant indirect costs of the patent systems for their foreign clients.
