    Abstract [en]

    The copolymerization of 1,5-dioxepan-2-one (DXO) and E-caprolactone, initiated by a five-membered cyclic tin alkoxide initiator, was performed in chloroform at 60 degreesC. Copolymers with different molar ratios of DXO (25, 40, and 60%) were synthesized and characterized. C-13 NMR spectroscopy of the carbonyl region revealed the formation of copolymers with a blocklike structure. Differential scanning calorimetry measurements showed that all the copolymers had a single glass transition between -57 and -49 degreesC and a melting temperature in the range of 30.1-47.7 degreesC, both of which were correlated with the amount of DXO. An increase in the amount of DXO led to an increase in the glass-transition temperature and to a decrease in the melting temperature. Dynamic mechanical thermal analysis measurements confirmed the results of the calorimetric analysis, showing a single sharp drop in the storage modulus in the temperature region corresponding to the glass transition. Tensile testing demonstrated good mechanical properties with a tensile strength of 27-39 MPa and an elongation at break of up to 1400%. The morphology of the copolymers was examined with polarized optical microscopy and atomic force microscopy; the films that crystallized from the melt showed a short fibrillar structure (with a length of 0.05-0.4 mum) in contrast to the untreated solution-cast films.     Introduction: Sustainability issues are getting more and more attention. A common framework for working with sustainability is based on the three dimensions of social sustainability, environmental sustainability and economic sustainability. The goal of the sustainability model is to achieve a balance between the dimensions. Although sustainability models have been known for decades, companies find it difficult to strike a balance, as the economic dimension tends to set the agenda for the other two. Consequently, it seems easier to work with sustainability in theory than in practice. One reason for this may be that the companies have many stakeholders to consider. The digital infrastructure is making the market more and more global.

     

    Problem discussion: The marketplace is changing, both for those who choose to apply the new technology as well as for those who choose to stand outside. New electronic solutions create new opportunities for both businesses and consumers. Sustainability aspects of the electronic B2C (Business to Consumer) commerce have been studied before, but there is a knowledge gap in the electronic B2B (Business to Business) commerce and especially in relation to sustainability. This is even though it is expected to increase more than B2C commerce on the internet.

     

    Purpose: The purpose is to increase the understanding of the relationship between the export companies' electronic B2B commerce and their sustainability work based on the three dimensions; social sustainability, environmental sustainability and economic sustainability.

     

    Method: The qualitative study was conducted as a case study. The sample has been Swedish, exporting companies in Malaysia. Informants from each case company have been interviewed.

     

    Results and conclusion: All the companies in the case study are actively working on sustainability issues inspired by the three dimensions of social, environmental and economic sustainability. The result shows that few Swedish exporting companies in Malaysia are working with electronic B2B commerce. This is mainly because traditional sales dominate. For the companies that have implemented electronic B2B commerce, there are contradictions, in particular, between the economic sustainability dimension and the social sustainability dimension.

    Abstract [en]

    Purpose - The purpose of this study is to explore the relationship between the establishment of a Project Management Office and project performance. Particularly, whether or not the establishment of a Project Management Office leads to enhanced project performance in project based organizations.

     

    Framework - The framework developed for the purpose of this study is made out of the different categories of Project Management Office services and functions on the one side and the different dimensions of project performance on the other. The model created tests the individual relationships between the constructs on each side.

     

    Methodology- The study employs a quantitative research design. Project Management Offices in organizations from across the globe and operating in a range of industries and industry segments are investigated. The data for the study is collected using an online questionnaire.

     

    Findings - The findings of this study lead to the belief that the establishment of a Project Management Office and the implementation of a certain set of its services and function will indeed lead to enhanced project performance

     

    Managerial Implications - Managers are made aware of the impact of the Project Management Office on project performance. Moreover, they are given guidelines as to what services and functions to adopt if there were only interested in seeing results on the project level.

    Limitations - The approach to exploring the subject in hand, the choice of participating organizations, the size of the sample tested, and the framework chosen for the evaluation of project performance are all seen as limitations for this study.

    In this longitudinal case study, the authors integrate the theory on social movement with the entrepreneurship literature on opportunity discovery, evaluation, and exploitation. They construct a model on collaborative entrepreneurial processes in which multiple partners are involved in identifying, forming, and exploiting an opportunity. Three interdependent subprocesses are identified: (1) the opportunity conceptualization dialogue, (2) resource mobilization and, (3) legitimacy building, which significantly contribute to our understanding of how individuals across different organizations become engaged in collaborative entrepreneurial processes. The model of collaborative entrepreneurial processes complements traditional models of the entrepreneurial process, which place the individual entrepreneur at the center of the process and does not consider group mobilization processes in which the actors aim to be creative and innovative in collaborating with actors from other organizations or firms.

    Time is in control of our everyday life and work life. Time is a valuable resource of which everyone possesses the same amount. In work life, time is important; it rules the workday and the tasks that are being performed. Time is even more significant within the consultancy industry, where worked time and competence is what is being delivered to the customers. Since time is of great importance for consulting firms, time management systems and time reporting become a crucial part of a consultant’s day. IT consulting firms spend lots of time and money on business systems, despite this the area of how time management and performance management are connected is relatively unexplored.

    This report aims to contribute to an enhanced understanding regarding why consultancy firms work with time management, and how data from time management systems could be used. The study will also investigate how the employees could be motivated to use the time management system in the extent that the managers wish, as well as important requirements on data from the time management system. These questions can together give answer to how time management can be aligned with performance management within an IT consultancy firm.

    The report is based on 14 interviews performed at five different IT consulting firms in the Stockholm area, a participant observation conducted at one of the participating companies, as well as a literature review. The study was performed during the spring of 2013.

    The study found that the main reason for IT consultant firms to report time is to gain decision support for invoices and salary payments. Being able to see overtime and flextime is something that is appreciated by the employees. Other identified areas of usage are forecasts and estimates, evaluations and follow-ups, utilization rate calculations, and employee care. Regular follow-ups, preferable weekly, are necessary for motivating the employees to work with time management. It is also important that the time management system is easy to use in order for it to generate relevant decision support.

    The study shows that to implement a successful time management strategy, the following aspects should be considered: (i) to not measure too much, (ii) to have clear communication and weekly deadlines, (iii) to make it simple, (iv) to create awareness among the employees, and (v) to have a time management system that mutually benefits the managers and the employees.

    In today's society, there is a technology that not everyone thinks about, namely Self-Service Technology (SST). Self-Service Technology is often in one's vicinity. Companies use this technology to satisfy their customers faster and more smoothly. This study was performed on Monitor's ERP System AB's Online help using a quantitative method. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the importance of the different dimensions of Self-Service Technology (SST) for customer satisfaction. To then generate new knowledge and suggestions for improvements to SST and web-based customer support systems. To conduct this study, an exploratory factor analysis was used on the 7 dimensions within Self-Service Technology and the dimension customer satisfaction. The results showed that the two dimensions functionality and convenience had the strongest connection to the dimension customer satisfaction. Therefore, businesses similar to Monitor's ERP System AB should focus on improving the functionality and convenience dimensions to achieve better customer satisfaction.

    Abstract [en]

    Many incumbent corporations make equity investments in young technological start-ups to enhance their innovation effectiveness, and the great majority syndicate at least some of their investments with other incumbents. While syndication is generally held to benefit incumbent corporations, this study demonstrates that it may also be detrimental to corporate innovation, by elaborating the notion of an information exchange paradox - essentially, that information exchanges within CVC networks must, somehow, be both open and closed at the same time. Corporations must try to appropriate the knowledge championed by their investees and fellow-investors, but also protect their own know-how from leaking to competitors. Unlike prior CVC research, we demonstrate that knowledge sharing in open innovation forums may be counterproductive. Using a unique data set of the investment decisions made by 163 corporations over four years we show that, for some, participating in syndicate networks may involve losses that outweigh their gains. Our analysis establishes two key findings. First, corporations need to consider the trade-off between the number of ventures they support and the position they take in their syndication networks. The best strategies appear to be maximizing isolationist (supporting many ventures but staying away from the network centre) or minimizing centralist (supporting few ventures, but occupying a central network position) - the other two options (maximizing centralist and minimizing isolationist strategies) are far less effective in converting CVC investments into corporate innovation. Second, this picture is particularly applicable to highly concentrated industries dominated by several powerful incumbents: in fragmented industries these strategy differences are far less pronounced, so the choice of CVC syndication strategy will depend on other considerations. This supports a contingency view of syndication, implying that ensuring incumbent corporations really benefit from equity investments in start-ups is a not a trivial task for their managers

    Contrary to the conventional wisdom, this study demonstrates that technological laggards and not industry front-runners are most likely to experience high rates of technological advancement in strategic alliances. We further suggest that imitation and not innovation is the primary source of such advancement based on the fact that technological progress by laggards is most visible in industries that lack strong appropriability regimes. Finally, we present empirical evidence suggesting that lagging established corporations prefer to imitate from startups and not from fellow-incumbents. These results are derived from a careful analysis of a longitudinal sample of over 150 incumbents with varying degree of technological prowess who engage in partnerships with both startups and fellow-incumbents across a wide representation of industries. Our paper contributes to technological innovation, strategic alliance, entrepreneurship, and imitation literatures and provides non-trivial implications for startups.

    Abstract [en]

    Research on corporate venture capital (CVC) has consistently proven its importance for innovation and other strategic goals, yet information on the antecedents of CVC activity is scarce. This study provides theoretical arguments for the role of governance factors including board, CEO, and institutional ownership characteristics. Empirical evidence from an international sample of global CVC investments shows that factors such as having a board with multiple board mandates and institutional ownership are important factors for CVC activity. The conclusion is that the role of governance factors is important, and that subsequent research should not ignore this group of factors.

    Entrepreneurs respond to opportunities that come in two basic forms: innovation and arbitrage. This article presents a technique called the minimum performance inefficiency (MPI) estimation method that could be used to estimate arbitrage opportunities. The technique has several advantages over the conceptually similar data envelopment analysis (DEA) and other techniques. The authors validate the technique with a well-known data set and illustrate its use based on secondary data from the publishing industry.

    Despite the widespread assumptions of the positive relationship between start-up rates and innovation, the empirical support for this conjecture in the crosscountry context is largely lacking. We draw upon recent advances in the entrepreneurship literature to propose that the relationship between start-up rates and innovation is not uniformly positive, as expected by the early scholars of entrepreneurship, but instead depends on the country's stage of development. The relationship is positive in the developed countries, but negative in countries in early development stages. On balance, there is a weak negative association between start-up rates and innovation. We test our hypotheses on a multi-source dataset that covers 35 countries over the period from 1996 to 2002. The relationships are robust to the choice of three moderators and two dependent variables, as well as a number of post-hoc tests. Our findings indicate that broad-strokes policy efforts that aim at promotion of entrepreneurship as a means to boost country innovativeness may be misguided, and instead suggest a contingency approach.

    In this study we investigate the relationship between technological arbitrage opportunities and entry rates in twenty-six industries over the course of five years. Arbitrage opportunities are shown to be a positive and significant predictor of business entry rates. Such positive effect is weakened in industries with strong appropriability regime including effective patents, secrecy, and lead time. Adding arbitrage opportunities to the typical determinants of entrepreneurship such as innovative opportunities significantly increases predictive power of the regression models.

    Despite the impressive development of substantive theories in entrepreneurship, without the development of measurement theories, further advancement of the field is problematic. In particular, the notion of opportunities, central to entrepreneurship research, requires adequate macro-level operationalization. We demonstrate how to employ data envelopment analysis (DEA) to operationalize not only innovative opportunities, but also technological arbitrage opportunities. We provide an illustrative example based on a sample of 66 countries during the period of 1993-2002. We include estimates of innovative and arbitrage opportunities for possible use by other scholars, discuss the promise and limitations of such estimates, demonstrate how both innovative and arbitrage opportunities correlate with the rates of entrepreneurial activity, and suggest several possible directions for future research.

    The emerging literature on outbound open innovation has highlighted innovation processes, which presuppose active outward technology transfer to increase firm profits. To contribute to this discourse, our paper goes beyond the emphasis on core-related technologies and knowledge that currently dominates the technology management literature and develops the novel concept of misfit technology. This concept captures technologies that are not aligned with a focal firm's current knowledge base and/or business model, but which may still be of great value to the firm if alternative commercialization options are considered. By developing a framework that acknowledges (1) Sources of misfit technology, (2) Environmental uncertainty, (3) Organizational slack, (4) Industry appropriability regime and (5) Technological complexity, we theorize on how different modes of commercialization relate to misfit technology commercialization success. The paper is conceptual and is presented with the purpose to spawn further research on this important topic, but simultaneously touches upon the issues of utmost relevance to R&D management practice

    This paper analyzes the strategic effects of corporate venture capital investments. Specifically, by studying the deals of 163 corporations over a four-year period, it documents the effects of driving, emerging, enabling, and passive investments on the pool of innovative opportunities available to incumbents and the scale efficiency gains they experience as a result of these investments. The study suggests that by making driving and enabling investments, incumbents position themselves in the industry to take advantage of increased pools of innovative opportunities and improve scale efficiency yields.     Abstract [en]

    For a sample of all 88 counties in the State of Ohio over a 5-year period, this study documents the effect of flagship enterprises and concentrated industrial clusters on regional innovation. Consistent with the agglomeration arguments and the knowledge spillover theory of entrepreneurship, both appear to affect regional innovation positively. Additionally, regional educational attainment positively moderates the effect of industrial clusters on innovation. At the same time, flagship enterprises primarily affect regional innovation in regions with low education levels. Results are obtained with the help of conservative econometric techniques and are robust to the choice of alternative dependent variables and estimators. The findings have major policy implications and provide insights into alternative routes to encouraging regional innovation.

    We examined 26 industries to estimate the amount of technological arbitrage opportunity available to a typical firm. By presenting a novel way of treating time series data that combine the properties of intertemporal and sequential production frontiers, we analyze 10,650 firm-year observations for the years from 1999 to 2003. Technological expansions, catching-up innovations and technological shifts at the regional level: conceptual considerations and empirical illustration, Regional Studies. Few techniques can capture different types of regional innovations, despite the importance of distinguishing between the innovation types for practitioners and policy-makers. This paper develops and illustrates a methodology based on data envelopment analysis that could be employed to shed light on this critical issue. Different types of regional innovations are analysed based on a longitudinal analysis of all Swedish counties over a five-year period. The approach can be used to analyse and distinguish between expansion-, catching-up- and shift-based types of regional innovation. Regional innovativeness is shown to be related to the regional levels of entrepreneurial activity.

    Abstract [en]

    To enhance innovation effectiveness, many incumbent corporations make equity investments in young technological startups. Four out of five corporate investors syndicate at least some of their investments with other incumbents. While syndication practices may be beneficial to incumbent corporations, in this study we elaborate on the notion of information exchange paradox to demonstrate that syndication may be detrimental to corporate innovation. Using a unique data set of investment decisions of 163 corporations over four years, we show that for some corporations the losses of participating in syndicate networks may outweigh the gains. In particular, we demonstrate that syndication network centrality negatively moderates the ability of a corporation to benefit from its investments. We also show that the effect is particularly strong in highly concentrated industries but is virtually non-existent in industries with low concentration. This supports a contingency view of syndication and implies that benefiting from equity investments in startups is a non-trivial task for managers of incumbent corporations.

    The needs of the consumer are drastically changing with increased awareness, technology, and innovation. Information technology services are no longer part of the support function but a full-scale solution; the increased demand for personalized, real-time, and hassle-free services has burdened software solution providing companies. Over the last decade, Agile project management has gained popularity among various industries and specifically in the Information Technology industry and is often considered a silver bullet to solve different software project management challenges. Agile project management revolutionized the way software projects are developed and organized. However, organizations find it challenging to implement agile principles as the process requires an organization-wide cultural and social transformation. Managers face several barriers when they try to bring agile approaches in traditional organizations regarding technology, mindset, practices. It’s not adequate to just start learning and implementing new ways of working. The transition process needs parallel or equally salient activities of dealing with challenges on the organization and team level. This study provides insights for software organizations willing to undergo an agile transition that needs an initial understanding of various challenges, which can be a potential pitfall in the transition process.

    Purpose

    Considering the importance and the broad applications of the Fourth Industrial Revolution in various organizations and industries and enjoying the many benefits of this digital transformation framework, organizations need to measure their Industry 4.0 readiness as a starting point and take steps to achieve the strategic goals of Industry 4.0. This study aims to design a comprehensive and practical model that can determine Industry 4.0 readiness level, allowing organizations to implement and exploit technological constituents of this phenomenon.

    Design/methodology/approach

    A systematic literature review (SLR) methodology was used to evaluate and summarize a clear and comprehensive literature overview of Industry 4.0 readiness models and to certify the validity and transparency of the review process. After reviewing 71 articles and survey and then the consensus of Industry 4.0 experts, the 10 dimensions of the 4.0 Industry readiness model were finalized with their indicators having the most frequency in the published articles and models.

    Findings

    The application of the SLR to the development of the new Industry 4.0 readiness model which includes 10 dimensions and 37 indicators and can assess the Industry 4.0 readiness of firms and industries accurately and effectively.

    Research limitations/implications

    An extensive review of the previous literature yielded the current Industry 4.0 readiness model. The comprehensiveness of this model leads to its wide application in different companies. Future research suggestions are presented at the end of the manuscript.

    Practical implications

    The concept of the Fourth Industrial Revolution and the application of its technologies are vague and complicated for many organizations and managers, while the need to implement the components and technologies of Industry 4.0 is essential to achieve organizational goals. The presented readiness model helps companies to measure their readiness to enter the Fourth Industrial Revolution and achieve long-term goals.

    Originality/value

    In this study, an attempt was made to examine the Industry 4.0 readiness models thoroughly and extensively and identify their different approaches. Finally, a comprehensive and multi-dimensional readiness model is presented to assess the position of organizations in order to enter Industry 4.0.

The question is not about when it will happen but in which conditions, under which form or who will be the first car manufacturer to release an efficient and reliable final product.By now, the equation has not been solved, due to the high price of the technologies needed, the lack of solutions to provide a reliable network, and the necessity to change conventions established a long time ago in terms of responsibility of the driver.Depending on who is talking, the Autonomous vehicle is not only an evolution of a previous product, which is able to evaluate and to progressively transform into something different that we could call a self-driven car. This innovation is one step further and is challenging everything that was established until now in terms of objective criteria expected from a car. This is why some are calling this a disruptive innovation, or even a revolution, in the sense that it has the power to totally change the way we are interacting with our everyday transportation system.To enter into the market, this technology, this product, will have to overcome some challenges, on the technological side but also on the psychological side of his future clients.Therefore, this thesis research analyses why this innovation could be the future of the Automotive industry, where it is coming from, what are the challenges it will have to overcome, which will be the impacts, and the different possible scenarios.

    Abstract [en]

    A framework for the evaluation of the effectiveness of traffic diversion strategies for non-recurrent congestion, based on predictive guidance and using dynamic traffic assignment, is presented. Predictive guidance is based on a short-term prediction of traffic conditions, incorporating user reaction to information and guidance. A case study of the Lower Westchester County network in New York State, using DynaMIT-P, is presented to illustrate the application of the framework. DynaMIT-P is capable of evaluating diversion strategies based on predicted conditions, which take into account drivers' response to traffic information. The case study simulates the operations of predictive variable message signs positioned in strategic locations. DynaMIT-P is calibrated for the study network and used to establish base conditions for two incident scenarios in the absence of advanced traveller information systems. The effectiveness of predictive diversion strategies is evaluated (using rigorous statistical tests) by comparing traffic conditions with and without diversion strategies. The empirical findings suggest that incident diversion strategies based on predictive guidance result in travel time savings and increased travel time reliability.

    Abstract [en]

    The aim of this thesis was to explore the spatiality’s affect on refugee’s sense of safety in the Osire refugee settlement in Namibia. The gathered empirics together with previous research and theories should lead to a design for a spatial information system. The system should contribute to peoples’ understanding of their environments’ whole structure as well as showing the way to the health centre and the police station, thus increasing their sense of psychological and physical safety. A wish was also to breathe life into the point of intersection of spatial information design and human science.

    The methods used to enable this were first and foremost a field study in the settlement to experience and acquire first-hand information. In addition observation, introspection and several interviews were conducted.

    As a result I established safety to be an issue that could be solved with spatial design. Refugees expressed that not knowing your environment or finding your way leaves you scared, uncomfortable and confused. With the use of a spatial information system safety can literally be created, as demonstrated in the design proposal. The conclusion is that much could be done to spatially solve complex issues as long as it’s addressed from that perspective.

    Trenden i samhället är att öka återvinningsgrad av produkter för att skapa ytterligare värden av förbrukade produkter. Detta projekt har initierats av möjligheten att återanvända mjölkkartonger till bygg- och möbelskivor i syfte att minska byggindustrins totala miljöpåverkan genom minskat uttag av primärmaterial och lägre CO2 belastning. Förpackningsmaterial för mat och dryck innehåller ofta ett skikt av plast, av typen PET med syfte att hålla livsmedlet färskt och fritt från atmosfären. Efter användning samlas förpackningar in till förbränning då det inte finns något annat sätt att återvinna/återbruka dessa material. Det är svårt att skilja pappkartong och plast åt vid dagens förbränningsanläggningar och därmed skapas stora förorenande utsläpp (bland annat CO2). Det är önskvärt att hitta ett område där kartonger för livsmedel kan återvinnas till ett annat högvärdigt material och då kan ersätta material med högre miljöbelastning. Att göra en skiva till bygg och möbelindustrin genom att sönderdela kartonger för livsmedel och utan tillsatser pressa dem till en produkt som därmed ersätter mer belastande skivor som gips och OSB ger industrin en möjlighet att ytterligare minska sin miljöpåverkan. Ett potentiellt område kan vara inom byggindustrin, och att då hitta en ersättning eller komplement till de skivmaterial som idag används i väggar och tak. Dagens skivor är tillverkade av blandade material, i form av OSB (träspån och lim) och gips (kalk och papp). Initiala prover, genomförda av tillverkaren ej RISE, av den framtagna skivan har visat på god teknisk prestanda, men byggindustrin är på goda grunder kritisk till nya material, varför det krävs en noggrann kontroll av prestanda på såväl lång som kort sikt för att säkerställa ett kontrollerat byte till mer hållbart material. Metoden att samla in och sönderdela kartonger på ett band för press under tryck och värme, och att skapa en bygg- och möbelskiva producerad av återvunnet material utan andra tillsatser i processen är lovande. Den ingående andelen PET agerar som bindemedel för att skapa skivan som är homogen och stark. Initiala tester har visat en funktionsprestanda mellan OSB och gips, varför målsättningen är att ersätta kombinationer av dessa i flera applikationer. Introduktion av material och produkter kräver en robusthet avseende tekniska egenskaper samt tester i faktiska miljöer för introduktion i byggindustrin. Men ett ökat intresse för och krav ur miljösynpunkt öppnar för möjligheter att skapa värde. För att realisera detta värde finns det ett behov av att testa och verifiera olika tekniska egenskaper av produkten mot de funktionella krav som finns på marknaden för denna typ av produktändamål. Tekniska egenskaper som bör verifieras är bland annat formstabilitet, tålighet mot fukt, akustik, brand och avslutningsvis de miljöegenskaper som uppstår.

    Research indicates that interactions on social media can reveal remarkably valid predictions about future events. In this study, we show that online legitimacy as a measure of social appreciation based on Twitter content can be used to accurately predict new venture survival. Specifically, we analyze more than 187,000 tweets from 253 new ventures’ Twitter accounts using context-specific machine learning approaches. Our findings suggest that we can correctly discriminate failed ventures from surviving ventures in up to 76% of cases. With this study, we contribute to the ongoing discussion on the importance of building legitimacy online and provide an account of how to use machine learning methodologies in entrepreneurship research.

    Den här rapporten riktar sig till dig som arbetar med digitaliseringsinitiativ inom den svenska offentliga sektorn och har ett intresse för mjuk digital infrastruktur. Syftet med denna studie är att undersöka hur kommuner och offentliga organisationer genomför digitaliseringsinitiativ inom olika områden av sin verksamhet och vilka utmaningar som skapas av mjuk digital infrastruktur i denna process. Rapporten innehåller också möjliga vägar framåt och rekommendationer kring olika aspekter av mjuk digital infrastruktur till RISE, kommuner och myndigheter.

    I rapporten beskriver vi åtta fallstudier och identifierar skillnader och gemensamma drag mellan dem.

    Analysen bygger på intervjuer med forskare från olika avdelningar på RISE som har arbetat med mjuk digital infrastruktur inom smarta städer och IoT-data, öppna och delade data, eHälsa och omsorg, smarta fastigheter, mobilitet och transport, jordbruk samt vatten och avlopp.

    Analysen visade att kommuner och offentliga organisationer inom olika områden upplever precis samma tekniska, organisatoriska och affärsrelaterade utmaningar relaterade till mjuk digital infrastruktur. Den organisatoriska delen och brist på samordning kring ett gemensamt nationellt ramverk skapar de största utmaningarna. Dessutom visade analysen på behovet av nationell samordning och samverkan kring mjuk digital infrastruktur.

    Studien och rapporten är delar av ett internt RISE projekt med namnet ’TI Mjuk digital infrastruktur’. Författaren vill rikta ett speciellt tack till alla involverade och intervjuade RISE-forskare och experter.

    Incorporation of luminescent nanometric films in photonic crystals and devices for the development of photonic sensors2010Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

    Dye molecules embedded in different matrices in the form of thin films are the basis of specific materials used for laser cavities, optical filters, optical gas sensors, etc. In the present communication we discuss a new methodology based on the remote microwave plasma assisted deposition of dye containing thin films that circumvent the above mentioned problems. It permits a tailored synthesis of optically active nanometric thin films containing dye molecules which are active as fluorescence emitters (i.e., coloured and fluorescent films). The principle of this new procedure is the partial polymerization of dye molecules that are evaporated over a substrate while exposed to a remote microwave Ar plasma. As a result of this process a polymeric thin film is produced in one step where some dye molecules keep intact their optical activity (although eventually, their optical response can be slightly modified by matrix effects). This methodology has been recently used for the deposition of novel plasma nanocomposites containing non-aggregated laser dyes to maximize the fluorescent emission of the materials and for the fabrication of optical NO2 sensing nanocomposites. To illustrate the possibilities of the technique we present here results for different fluorescent dye molecules, as perylene dyes, and several xanthene and oxazine derivative cationic dyes which are typically used as gain media in tuneable laser dyes. The luminescent, optical and sensing properties of these dye containing nanocomposites will be presented. These active optical layers are being developed for the fabrication of photonic sensor devices, optical filters and photonic chips (PHODYE EU Project). This is due to the full compatibility of the synthetic methodology with the present integrated microelectronic and optoelectronic technology. The possibilities for the fabrication of photonic devices integrating these active optical layers will be demonstrated. Especial attention will be paid to recent results about the incorporation of the luminescent films in photonic crystals and about the conformal growth of luminescent planar defects within artificial opals.

    Project control is essential to ensure that the investment on a project is providing the intended benefits and is valuable to the customers. Previous methods offer project performance monitoring and forecasting tools, but they lack accuracy and the associated techniques omit the project financial risk (any unplanned event that has an impact on schedule and budget); the main factor of project failure. Poor project execution, and particularly failure to control and accurately forecast the project performance, may lead to increased costs, upset customers and eventually loss of market share. These gaps have been filled in this study by the development of novel models that use statistical analysis of the previous project performance, including risk evaluation techniques. The proposed models succeeded in providing remarkably improved forecasts in three project dimensions: duration, cost and resources. The robustness of the models has been verified by testing them on real projects. The results show superiority in terms of accuracy and easy application compared to any existing method, proving that the risk inclusion provides improvement compared to previous studies. The most important features of the models are: risk-based adjustment of the forecasted values, periodic and completion forecasts, statistical processing and holistic approach. The greatest advancements have been made in the cost forecast, for which the risk adjustment inclusion is examined for the first time. The resources (man-hours) forecast is another pioneer element of the proposed models. All the above provide a complete image of the project status and paint the picture of future performance. The models results are fed in a Decision Support System, which highlights the overperforming and underperforming areas of the project. This confirms the proposition that the model results can be used to initiate restorative action. The contribution of this study to the project management field is easy-to-use and accurate models, which include the financial risk and facilitate the project manager’s decisions and actions. Anticipation of the project performance, by considering the risk, can result to significant time and cost savings, crucial for project success.

    Abstract [en]

    Risk perception can be defined as people’s interpretation and subjective assessment of risk. The perception of risk is a crucial factor that is believed to impact people when taking financial decisions. Previous research shows clear differences between men’s and women’s risk taking in financial decision. Men are in general portrayed as more risk taking and not viewing risk as something problematic, whilst women are not as positive towards risk. The purpose with this study is to gain understanding of how risk perception differs between men and women when taking financial decisions, and to examine if there are any differences in men’s and women’s perception of risk throughout five dimensions of financial risk perception. To answer the study’s formulated research questions, a quantitative study in the form of questionnaire has been carried out. Collected data have been analyzed through a descriptive data analysis and t-tests. The results of this study are in line with previous research and indicate that women perceive financial risk as significantly higher than what men do. On the other hand, the study did not provide a clear result regarding differences between the genders’ risk perception in the five dimensions of financial risk perception. However, the study showed that women perceived the significant negative consequences for financial investments as significantly larger than men. This result can also be considered to be in line with previous research. Due to this, the result of the study can be seen as having contributed with further empirical support to previous scientific research regarding the differences between men and women’s risk perception when making investment decisions.

    Abstract [en]

    Within this degree project a conceptual design of a mask has been developed for people with Multiple Chemical Sensitivity due to the lack of this kind of product in the market. The users currently use different masks that are designed to be used in other activities.  A preliminary study has been performed where market, ergonomics, materials and use situations have been analysed to gather knowledge to define the specifications of the product. Even if  the aesthetics of the first version of the product’s design was related to a health care design style, after obtaining results, it was observed that the wishes of the users weren’t being fulfilled. After updating the specifications and the generation phase three possible concepts have been presented. The evaluation has been done within the design group and the target users from the Basque association “Bizi-Bide”. The final conceptual design has been developed regarding different aspects such as ergonomics, materials, components and graphic design. The project has resulted in a concept of an innovative mask, which has a mouldable part for the nose and cheeks, a Velcro fastener to adapt it to different head measurements and exchangeable filters.

    Abstract [en]

    The organic electronic ion pump (OEIP) is an electrically controlled polymer-based device that has the capability to interact with biological systems down to a single cell level by mimicking neural signalling. This is accomplished by translation of an electrical signal into a chemical output, such as ions and neurotransmitters. Because of the combined spatial and temporal precision, this is a technology with a promising future as an advanced therapeutic device. Depending on the application, the OEIP requires different geometries. Implants that will be used to control on a single cell level require very small dimensions, while for example extracorporeal mounted OIEPs, with only the delivery channel penetrating the skin, require much longer channels. Despite the application, it is necessary to have a good knowledge about the transport and delivery properties and how they change due to the geometry. These properties have been observed as very varying and unstable in early unpublished results, and these findings motivate this project. This project includes photolithographic fabrication and investigation of transport and delivery properties such as effective resistance, efficiency and stability of OEIPs with varying delivery channel lengths and widths. Shorter delivery channels show a consistent but relatively low efficiency. Delamination between different layers of the device is suspected as the cause. Initially, the longer delivery channels show a low functionality, most probably due to poor encapsulation. It is suggested that a soft, water-permeable plastic best encapsulates OEIPs that will be used as a medical implant, while a material impermeable to water, for example a metal, could successfully encapsulate OEIPs operating in air.

    This article illustrates how opportunities for regional renewal in a peripheral region may be reduced by rigid threat responses undertaken by established firms operating within traditional regional industry. In an inductive case study of new biorefinery industry initiatives in a region where traditional pulp-and-paper and forestry industry was in decline, we used primary and secondary data to outline how a set of new industry players who created innovative ways of using existing regional infrastructures and resources sparked rigid threat responses among established firms from the struggling traditional industry. Established industry firms framed new industry initiatives as threats, and responded by (1) reducing new industry actors' possibilities for new business development, (2) engaging in entrenched resistance, (3) creating collaborative illusions and (4) undermining the fundamentals of the new industry. Consequently, this study contributes to existing literature by proposing the potential of applying the threat-rigidity thesis on a regional level. This is achieved by illustrating that conflicting behaviours between new and established regional industry actors constrain opportunities for regional renewal in a peripheral region. As such, relevant directions for future research and policy implications are outlined

    This paper takes an integrative approach towards dialectics and social movement theories in a model of regional industry emergence processes. Based on an inductive qualitative investigation we describe how a new industry emerges in a declining and peripheral region dominated by struggling and traditional local industry. The emanating model of regional industry emergence is based on four main processes; framing processes, movement mobilisation processes, inter-industry relational processes and dialectical processes, which together shape the emerging regional industry. This exemplifies how new regional industry mobilisation efforts provide an ‘anti-thesis' to traditional industry, and how established industry actors respond with contestation to protect their business concepts. Furthermore we illustrate how new industry actors reframe their concepts to complement dominating traditional industry and to overcome tensions and conflicts. Following dialectic interaction between new and traditional industry we noticed signs of acceptance and synthesis between the newly formed and old industry actors; ultimately resulting in a revitalisation of the region's traditional industry. As such, the paper makes a point of accounting for agency and productive conflict when understanding regional industry renewal and emergence.

    This paper explores establishment processes of a new industry located in a peripheral region of Sweden that is based upon old traditional industries in decline. Based on a qualitative study, we identify how actors within the new industry interact and intervene with the existing infrastructures and institutions that support the old local industry while trying tobuild new infrastructures. We identify key restricting and supporting mechanisms for the establishment processes, with implications for policy and regional and entrepreneurship research.

    Purpose - To avoid a manual interaction required to activate an assault alarm in today'ssolutions, the purpose of this study is to investigate how well it is possible to detect aphysical assault using a mobile device's GPS.

    Method - An experimental study where the study's experiment was designed after atheoretical framework was established where previous studies on GPS accuracy havebeen reported. The experiment is then tested using three different use-cases for whenan alarm should be triggered or not.

    Results - The results of the study indicates that GPS functionality for detecting physicalassaults works to varying degrees. To detect if a user deviates outside a certain radiuson a route, the best possible outcome has an 80% positive predictive value. When itcomes to detecting whether the user has not moved on the route, the result shows thatall tests have a result with a sensitivity of 100%.

    Conclusion - The study's conclusion shows that it is considered possible to use the GPSto detect the scenarios where the user has suffered an “immobilization reaction” duringan assault to avoid the manual interaction that today's solutions require. However, thepositive predictive value is too low to be considered to meet the requirement to detectassaults in the scenarios the user deviates from the route.

    The advances in research on wireless communications has lead up to the current success of 4G mobile broadband and is currently focusing on designing the upcoming even more advanced fifth generation (5G) networks. The type of research behind this typically generates large quantities of data and requires efficient analysis in order to achieve tangible results. To enable this analysis, visualization of the data is used to give the researchers the needed insights. For this master thesis project an existing platform will be analyzed with the goal of, by utilizing the platform, creating a powerful, useful analysis application with the necessary and desired tools. The platform can access data produced from research simulations and visualize them through different types of useful charts. However, it has up until now lacked some important functionality, mainly letting the user modify and alter the visualization to aid in the analysis. It furthermore requires knowledge and experience before being useful. To solve this, there existed a need of extending the platform with new tools and functionality to give the user more control and possibilities and to simplify the usage. The thesis resulted in a functioning analysis application that gives the user many necessary features to effectively analyze data. The result fulfilled the set requirements with improved and added views, extended tools and optimized performance.

    Revenue management is a thoroughly researched field of study and it is widely used in several different industries. The Revenue Management Department at the airline SAS (Scandinavian Airline System) serves to maximise the profit of the company’s flights. At their disposal they have a number of tools, which use KPIs (Key Performance Indicators) as a measurement. The KPIs are used in prognosis to determine future initiatives, and to analyse and verify results. SAS does not know if the KPIs they focus on to measure performance are the most relevant for optimisation of revenue for their flights. In an attempt to simplify the use of SAS’ optimisation system we have performed a correlation analysis on a set of selected KPIs and assessed the influence relationships between these KPIs, in order to identify pivotal KPIs. Furthermore, we have researched origindestination control and the network effect to broaden the scope of the investigation. We have presented the work and the results in this thesis. The correlation analysis was performed using data, spanning a two-year period, for domestic flights (within Sweden) provided by SAS. The results of the analysis showed that the assessed KPIs could be divided into three groups; within each group the KPIs are closely correlated. As a result, we concluded that to focus on one KPI in each group should be adequate for evaluating performance. The three pivotal KPIs are revenue passenger kilometre, cabin factor and revenue per available seat kilometre. We have recommended SAS to continue working with origin-destination control and that the pivotal KPIs should be used as a measurement for the network, as well as measurements such as net leg revenue. Additionally, we have suggested that SAS conducts equivalent or similar analyses in other suitable areas to identify or confirm pivotal KPIs.

    Demanding markets and complex products are only some of the reasons that make changes and variations inevitable through different stages of product realization. From early phases of product development to downstream production phase, these changes or variations cause failure either directly or by propagating to other phases, triggering more fluctuations like the well-known butterfly effect. In this paper, first, the definition of changes in product realization will be reviewed and then different papers and their classification on change related system properties (illites) will be discussed and compared. It was argued that considering a system-level view, one could trace these propagations in the systems as a result of not being robust, flexible, or adaptable, etc. Some of the ambiguity in this semantic field demonstrated and most repeated definitions are identified as the unanimous and agreed-upon definitions in the literature. In the end, a historical comparison of the three identified properties presented. The results of this study help us to understand the multidisciplinary nature of these propagations and identify their stemming turbulent environment. This will be used as a foundation for forthcoming research either to prevent these propagations or utilize their attributes in the product realization.

    The aim of this thesis project is to contribute to an understanding of which charging monitoring solutions for mobile phones are valuable and possible for Scania to implement. These solutions are intended to make the person responsible for charging feel in control of the process.

    This project focuses on the implementation of a graphical user interface (GUI), with the possible integration of a server that is developed by another thesis worker at Scania. The scope is set to looking at the possibilities and limitations for one charging station, one vehicle and one driver. 

    Designing good user interfaces is more than mapping user needs to solutions. To design good interfaces, the technological possibilities and limitations must also be considered. This has partly been done by integrating and testing some relevant features with Scania’s battery electric trucks. 

    In terms of creating value for the user, the driver, a contextual design approach, developed by Hugh Beyer and Karen Holtzblatt, has been chosen. In this way, different solutions can be designed in a user-centered way.

    One of the results of this project is a minimum viable product (MVP) that Scania or other thesis workers can continue to develop. This MVP has mainly one feature that has been implemented and tested briefly. 

    The conclusion is that charging monitoring solutions that make drivers feel in control of the charging process have interfaces and interactions that are perceived as relevant by the driver. The relevant features are those that drivers would expect to have access to.

    Mobile technology has developed rapidly in the recent years and considerably changed the way organizations work. Mobility can bring great benefits to the organizations of which they are at, by e.g. improving employee satisfaction and increase efficiency and productivity. Despite this the development of mobile solutions have grown much faster for individuals than for organizations, with a plethora of devices and applications. The slow enterprise adoption is partly due to the fact that companies need to take information security risks into account at the same time as IT systems need to be rebuilt and customized to accommodate the new mobile way of working. Employees, unlike most other technologies, largely drive mobile strategies at organizations. Organizations are not developing in a fast enough pace and many scientist are describing a research gap in organizations adoption of mobility. This study aims to examine how research in the area has been presented and how enterprise mobility is viewed and utilized. The study has been implemented through qualitative research with a interpretative and exploratory approach. A case study was conducted at two organizations, demonstrating the possibilities and obstacles of enterprise mobility, and also strengthened the existing definition of the field. Additionally the case study illustrated discrepancies in IT solutions and the adoption of enterprise mobility within two different industries. Both researchers and organizations have shown a great interest in exploring this area additionally. Further studies can be extended to include the effects of how companies have adapted to enterprise mobility.

    The world is in a pandemic situation. Shifting to remote working has become a priority for many companies and remote work has become new normal. In doing so, industrial organizations are experiencing new challenges. Moving to the online way of working, new working conditions and different practical challenges they bring have created empirical context highly relevant for studying leadership which is currently a hot topic among scholars. Almost all studies, in the context of remote working, emphasize the importance of leadership. 

    Nevertheless, it is argued that the most recent literature and work on leadership have remained the leader-centered approach highly employed within traditional leadership literature. The leader-centered approach focuses on individual leaders and their traits, abilities, and actions, and thus contributes to placing the abstract phenomenon of leadership into distinct individuals, thereby supporting the taken-for-granted assumption that leadership is a single-person, heroic, task. Instead, scholars call for more studies that investigate leadership as ongoing social production of direction through constructions of space of action by actors in certain practice/practices. This emergent movement in leadership research is known as leadership as practice. 

    Accordingly, the aim of this thesis is to investigate leadership within the remote working environment, from leadership as practice perspective and through the construction of actors’ space of action. This includes an analysis of current leadership practices in relation to the construction of space of action as well as the analysis of practices that might potentially contribute to improving the current ones in doing so. 

    An interview study has been carried out at the three companies in Serbia, Germany, and the UK with a qualitative approach. The thesis builds on a theoretical framework and empirical data that have been collected through an extensive literature review and semi-structured interviews using an open-ended interview guide. 

    The result suggests that the current leadership practices are narrowing down the space of action. Also, the analysis of empirical data revealed that certain leadership practices have the potential to contribute to the construction of space of action within a remote working environment. The thesis’s insights might help companies to improve their own practices.
