Kommuner & Facebook: Hur hanteras regelverket kring allmänna handlingar?2010Självständigt arbete på avancerad nivå (magisterexamen), 10 poäng / 15 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this one-year master thesis in archival science was to examine how municipalities take regulations concerning public records into account when they use Facebook. Another aim was to examine the involvement of archivists, registrars or similar staff in the management of the regulations. Since Swedish archival theory and practice has a close connection to the application of these regulations, such an examination was hopefully going to reveal tendencies of importance for archival science. The method used to collect information was a web questionnaire and the result was based on answers from 21 municipalities with an official Facebook page. The questionnaire showed that six of the municipalities regarded documents originating from their Facebook page as public records. Three did not, and a large group had not yet decided how to treat these documents. Only three municipalities did archive documents from Facebook. The involvement of archivists, registrars and similar personnel was generally very small, even though regulations concerning public records had more often been taken into account in the municipalities that had informed this personnel about the use of an official Facebook page. The difference in management between the municipalities was together with the demand for national guiding principles indicating difficulties in applying the regulations to social medias like Facebook. The fact that most of the municipalities that had taken the regulations into account had come to the conclusion that Facebook generated public records, together with the fact that national guiding principles presented during the work with this thesis had the same interpretation, indicated that documents originating from Facebook will be a part of Swedish public records in the future. The difference in management and the demand for guidance also indicated a need for better division of responsibilities and a more active approach in the future, to ensure that the regulations concerning public records are taken into account early and correctly when authorities starts to use new medias.

Archives in the Digital Age: The use of AI and machine learning in the Swedish archival sector2022Självständigt arbete på avancerad nivå (masterexamen), 20 poäng / 30 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

The arrival of AI and machine learning in the archiving world implies a reconceptualization of archival institutions from consisting of archives as records to be read towards archives as data to be mined. This thesis aims to survey and analyse the arrival of AI and machine learning within the Swedish archival sector.

Through the analyses of four archival institutions and semi-structured interviews with archive professionals, this study illuminates the current state of AI in the Swedish archival sector, opportunities and obstacles of AI implementations, and the impact of AI on the Swedish archival profession. Swedish archival institutions have interest in and expectations of AI implementation. Yet, the current level of AI implementation is generally on experimental instead of an operational level. The findings show that collaboration and knowledge exchange are key drivers to accelerate the implementation of AI in the archival sector. The study concludes with practical rec-ommendations for archival institutions and archive professionals.

    Abstract [en]

This study examines the experiences of public library staff who works in an LGBTQ-profiled children’s library. The aim of the study is further to find out whether the library as an institution can challenge heteronormativity or if traditional gender identities are reproduced. I have conducted five qualitative interviews with librarians who all work in the same library, and who all work with children to some extent. The interview material is analyzed with queer theory and norm critical theories of pedagogy. These perspectives wish to critically examine heteronormativity and change what is defined as normal.

The result of the study shows that the way the library works with separate rainbow shelves, where LGBTQ-themed material is gathered, is pointing out LGBTQ as something different. And although it may also shed a light on a group formerly made invisible, it is reproducing traditional gender identities and leaves heteronormativity unquestioned. By contrast, the way the librarians are working with always including LGBTQ-materials in programming as storytimes and book presentations, is challenging the dominant position of heterosexuality. It is also shown that the way the library staff has developed their written and oral communication with the patrons, including using the gender neutral pronomina ”hen” and alternatives to ”mom and dad”, is increasing the possibilities of an inclusive reception in the library. The oral communication is for various reasons not always used though.

In conclusion the interviews show that the librarians are positive to working with LGBTQ-issues although they sometimes tend to forget. The study further concludes that the library’s way of working with LGBTQ-issues is both reproducing traditional gender identities, and challenging heteronormative structures.

    I riktning mot en normkreativ kulturmiljövård: Metodutveckling utifrån exemplet Statens fastighetsverk i Sverige2018Ingår i: Kulturstudier, E-ISSN 1904-5352, Vol. 9, nr 1, s. 167-198Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [sv]

Exploring the relation between referencing practices and citation impact: A large-scale study based on Web of Science data2018Ingår i: Journal of the Association for Information Science and Technology, ISSN 2330-1635, E-ISSN 2330-1643, Vol. 69, nr 5, s. 728-743Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

In this large-scale contribution, we deal with the relationship between properties of cited references of Web of Science articles and the field normalized citation rate of these articles. Using nearly 1 million articles, and three classification systems with different levels of granularity, we study the effects of number of cited references, share of references covered by Web of Science, mean age of references and mean citation rate of references on field normalized citation rate. To expose the relationship between the predictor variables and the response variable, we use quantile regression. We found that a higher number of references, a higher share of references to publications within Web of Science and references to more recent publications correlate with citation impact. A correlation was observed even when normalization was done with a finely grained classification system. The predictor variables affected citation impact to a larger extent at higher quantile levels. Regarding the relative importance of the predictor variables, citation impact of the cited references was in general the least important variable. Number of cited references carried most of the importance for both low and medium quantile levels, but this importance was lessened at the highest considered level.

    Abstract [en]

    Abstract

Introduction. The aim of this thesis is to examine use of library didactics in two prominent national libraries. A second aim is to identify digital resources used in the digital library spaces. The study uses “the four-space model” to examine this relation.

Method. Document analysis is used to examine the two national libraries´ websites. In addition to the websites, affiliated sites like social media are also included. Categories from the four- space model are used: learning space, inspiration space, performative space and meeting space. Digital resources are identified and presented in each category respectively.

Theories. Library didactics, as developed by for example Jochumsen, Rasmussen and Skot- Hansen, is the subject of the thesis and main theoretical focus. The digital library rooms are seen as places for possibilities and for developing innovative library practices.

Conclusion. The results imply that of the four spaces, the smallest one is the performative space and that the activities for creating are few. Different social media are to a large degree used as meeting space and thus possibilities for meeting and participation are subject to the companies’ business models and policies. In relation to the visitors the two national libraries mainly use their collections as resources in the inspiration space. One clear example is Gallica, described as a digital library with focus on digitized documents.  In the learning space the format is primarily texts with illustrations and this could be seen as an attempt from the libraries to adapt to a traditional learning environment. Furthermore it is concluded that the search functions can be a hindrance to both the visitor and to the libraries´ objectives. In the discussion, a question concerning competences is raised in regard to innovative library didactics.

    Abstract [en]

In this theses I investigate ideas about technology in relation to libraries held by actors in the librarian field. The purpose with the study has been to investigate how these actors think about their own role and their possibilities to affect and adapt to the general technological development. The aim with this thesis is to contribute to the knowledge of which functions the library fills today as well as which functions it can and should fill – today and tomorrow.

I have used a qualitative hermeneutic method and the empirical ground for this thesis consists of the two library papers Biblioteksbladet and Bibliotek i samhälle of which I have chosen to study issues published during 2019-2021.

For the analysis of the material I have constructed a theoretical framework built on previous research regarding  ideas of technology and technological development. The theoretical framework consists of three different ways to conceive and regard technology. The first two of these three viewpoints is if the actors have either a utopian or a dystopian view on the technological future in relation till libraries. The third concept is used to investigate if the actors expresses, or is affected by, a technological imperative. The technological imperative can be described as the idea of technology as something good in itself and/or that technology follows its own inner logic.

The result of the analysis showed that actors gave expression of both utopian and dystopian views of the libraries technological future. It also showed that actors were both affected by and gave expression themselves for a technological imperative and also that they argued against, and was making resistance to, a technological imperative.

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this thesis is to gain a greater understanding of how the public library’s mission towards foreign-born users in Sweden has reformulated and developed through time. This is done by a comparative study on official texts from the 1970s and the 2010s. The thesis is based on a discourse analytical perspective and is focused on how the texts are describing foreign-born users as a target group, and what is described as the main objective towards these particular users. The analysis also opens up for a discussion on the role of the public library in the development of a multicultural society. The empirical material consists of three official texts from each decade, that has been commissioned by different institutions with influence in the field.

The results show that the source material from the 1970s is characterized by the use of the word “invandrare” (in English immigrant), and an immigrant discourse where the immigrant is defined based on their perceived deviation from Swedish majority society. The library’s main mission towards these users described as providing books, newspapers and magazines in the immigrant’s native languages.

In the source material from the 2010s there is a wider range of words being used to refer to the group. The most frequently used is the word “nyanländ” (in English roughly translated to newcomer). This reflects the increasing focus on individuals which recently has immigrated and their information need during their first years in the new country. In the texts from the 2010s it is evident that the library sees itself as a tool for integration. One of the main conclusions from the analysis is that while the 1970s texts are focused on the foreign-born users cultural and linguistic distinctiveness, the texts from the 2010s see adaption to Swedish society as a primal objective. Abstract [en]

The aim of this master’s thesis is to examine how collaboration is represented in guiding documents and practice concerning reading promotional work towards children and youth within Sandviken’s cultural center’s public library and the house of literature. This is examined through a case study of the public library’s and the house of literature’s activities for children and youth, with a focus on how collaboration affects the organizations work towards these target groups.

The empirical material consists of legal texts from national, regional and municipal levels, documents, and guidelines for the two organizations, as well as qualitative interviews with librarians and activity developers within the library and house of literature’s practices. The empirical material is analyzed with the use of Kajsa Lindberg’s organizational definition of collaboration and focuses on how collaboration is perceived, motivated, what unifying objects that exist between different professions and which promoting and inhibitory aspects that can be identified.

The analysis shows that motives behind collaboration often involve different categories of motives at once and that they synergize with one another. Librarians and developers experience collaboration as more fruitful when sprung from practice rather than from directives stated in documents. However, the result from this thesis indicates that the documents have a valuable function in putting collaboration on the agenda within public libraries and making decisions to establish and invest in such activities more legitimate.

The results further indicate that the organizations within the case have promoting prerequisites that are specific for their local context such as engaged politicians and a strong local cultural tradition, but that the benefits that can be identified in some measures can be achieved elsewhere using the prerequisites at hand.

Organizational changes, trust and information sharing: an empirical study2019Ingår i: Aslib Journal of Information Management, ISSN 2050-3806, E-ISSN 2050-3814, Vol. 71, nr 5, s. 677-692Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

    Purpose

While there is relatively plenty of evidence for the positive impact of communication on the perceptions of organizational change, how organizational changes affect information sharing is relatively unknown. The purpose of this paper is to investigate if a favorable perception of ongoing organizational changes has a positive impact on information sharing and whether trust mediates this relationship.

    Design/methodology/approach

A questionnaire (n=317) was administered to the employees of a large Finnish multinational organization. Partial least square structural equation modeling was used to test the hypotheses based on earlier research findings.

    Findings

The results show that a positive perception of recent organizational changes improves information sharing both directly and indirectly, mediated by trust. Consequently, when changes are perceived negatively, employees recoil from information sharing which is known to have negative implications for organizations.

    Research limitations/implications

Data were collected in a single organization. The nature of the specific changes in the studied organization and its particularities undoubtedly had an effect on respondents’ perceptions.

    Originality/value

This paper contributes to organizational information management research by elaborating on the relationship between organizational changes and interpersonal information sharing between employees. To the authors’ knowledge, this is the first quantitative study confirming the impact of the perception of organizational changes on employee information-sharing behavior.

The impact of workplace information literacy on organizational innovation: An empirical study2020Ingår i: International Journal of Information Management, ISSN 0268-4012, E-ISSN 1873-4707, Vol. 51, artikel-id UNSP 102041Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

The present study investigates the relationship between CEO's information literacy and innovation in small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). Even if information literacy's business value has been recognized in recent literature, its impact on organizational innovation, a critical and strongly information intensive process, has never been studied before. Structural equation modeling based analysis of data collected from 184 company CEOs in Finland revealed that CEOs' information literacy has a positive impact on the development of exploratory and exploitative innovations in SMEs. Additionally, opportunity recognition mediates the relationship between information literacy and innovation. Overall, the influence of information literacy is slightly stronger on exploitation than exploration. Nevertheless, the mutual positive effect suggests that information literacy enhances innovation ambidexterity in organizations. Based on these findings, we discuss theoretical and practical implications as well as future research opportunities in workplace information literacy research.

    Abstract [en]

This master thesis examines the copyright law with the purpose of sorting out the consequences and the effects of the law impacted on libraries. The theories used are mainly discourse analysis and public domain theory. At the centre of the examination is the effects that copyright law bring to libraries and their ability to perform their work. A major part of this thesis is gathered around the analysis of the presumptive key words that give the structures of copyright law the possibility to claim rightfulness. This is an outspoken strategy to illustrate the discourse of copyright law. Through the whole working process the author is trying to keep a critical point of view. The literature that is used consists to the biggest parts of texts written as an examination of the copyright law and the effects of the law. The author also uses legislations and laws regulating libraries work in society. The goal of the examination is to point out and discuss the friction that appears when one system of intellectual property is institutionalized in society. With this comes the mission of opening a discussion concerning the possibilities for libraries to “keep going strong” in a time deeply influenced and regulated by copyright law.

Modern Turkish National Identity in Museums: Representation Analysis in Istanbul Museums and Heritage Sector Between 2010-20202021Självständigt arbete på avancerad nivå (masterexamen), 20 poäng / 30 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this master’s thesis is to investigate a information center called ”Infoteket om funktionshinder”. The purpose of Infoteket is to collect information about disabilities and make it accessible to people with disabilities, their relatives and public. In this survey I will analyze how Infoteket can help people with disabilities to achieve empowerment. I use empowerment as a theoretical framework as Jay A. Conger and Rabindra N. Kanungo describes it in terms of sense of control and self-efficacy. For people with disabilities, empowerment is about ability to control his own destiny. The key to empowerment is information. My second theoretical framework is Carol C. Kuhlthaus’ principle of uncertainty. I’ve found it possible to apply the phases from uncertainty to understanding to the information search process within the process of diag-nostics.The main method has been qualitative interviews where the informants have been selected according to their professional role. I have also studied Meeting Minutes and conducted a quantitative survey of visitor statis-tics.Infotekets’ role to promote empowerment lies in the ability to examine the quality and reliability of infor-mation about disabilities. A close collaboration with authorities makes it possible to ensure the quality. An im-portant criterion for quality is scientific foundation and accessibility. The literature must be readable for the public rather than professional. To promote empowerment it’s also important to reach the target groups. I have discussed if it makes any difference whether the information is available at the library or the habilitation. The results show little differ-ence, but there are some disabilities that are more difficult to reach through habilitation. That’s why I believe that the library is an important complement to habilitation. This is a two years master’s thesis within Library and Information science.

    Abstract [en]

The scope of this master thesis is the scientific publishing at Uppsala University's Faculty of Arts. The aim of the thesis is to investigate publication patterns and publishing strategies. To investigate how the publication patterns of the faculty is structured and what priorities and considerations the researchers have regarding scientific publishing.

Furthermore, the aim is to compare these publishing strategies and publication patterns to incentives and selection principles of the bibliometric indicators in the performance based research funding systems on the national and local scale.

The thesis is based on the theories of disciplinary differences developed by Richard Whitley and Tony Becher and Paul R. Trowler. These theories suggest a framework based on organizational and sociological perspectives, that offers ways to explain differences in publication patterns between different scientific fields.

The study is based on two empirical studies of the faculty. A survey of the researchers publication patterns has been conducted, and publications that are registered in the local publication database has been analyzed.

Results from the study show that scientific journal articles, book chapters and monographs, are the most important publishing forms and occur at all departments at the faculty. Many respondents remarked that publication patterns are changing toward more international publishing and increased article publishing in scientific journals, which corresponds with the analysis of the actual publications.

Overall, the respondents rank their knowledge of the bibliometric indicators in the lower scale, while the respondents' publication strategies are in fact consistent with the incentives in the allocation models.

The selection principle of the local allocation model captures a larger share of the faculty’s publications in comparison to the national allocation model. However, results from the survey shows that there are significant differences at an institutional level, in how the local bibliometric quality indicator assess the respondents' most central and most respected publishing channels. The publishing channels of the Department of Literature have the lowest correlation and the highest correlations are found among respondents from the Department of Philosophy. The study also finds a correlation between the quality indicators’ assessment of the departments’ central publishing channels and the assessment of the departments' actual publications.

    Abstract [sv]

This master´s thesis in Library and Information Science examines reading promotion projects that has been executed in cooperation between libraries and sports clubs.  The purpose of this thesis is to examine why these projects are invested in, by both libraries and the sports clubs, and how the persons involved in them are thinking about reading and its purpose. Based on both the concept of cooperation and that of united collaborative actions, two projects are examined where the libraries has cooperated with SISU sport clubs, and that has been completed on two different places in Sweden. The method to collecting data was qualitative interviews with four librarians and three sports consultants from SISU. There are several focus points in this study, one of them is the perception of children and their reading, also known as their literacy. Another important aspect in the study is that regarding how the cooperation between these two different professional cultures has been completed and if differences has affected the projects.  The theoretical framework consists of the sociocultural theory developed by Roger Säljö as an overall perspective, and the concepts of teamwork, work dimensions and the professional object from the works of Lena Folkesson and Amira Sofie Sandin. The concept of childhood studies also plays an important part in the interpretation of the material, as well as the idea of sports and reading as opposites, against the background of research about history of reading.  Main results of the study shows that the librarians and sports consultants involved in the projects shared positive experiences, except for some initial skepticism from the sports clubs. Other interesting results are the approach to reading as a means to achieve focus for upcoming sport achievements. The projects have been executed with the hopes of reaching out with books to children in a different environment than the school, and thereby attract them to read more.  This is a two years master's thesis in Archive, Library and Museum studies.

    Abstract [sv]

The purpose of this study has been to find out what concepts of user participation exits in the theory formation of Library 2.0. The study has also investigated if theories about Library 2.0 have been affected by the practical experiences made by the implementations of Library 2.0 in library environments.

The source material consists of texts published in the international journals Library Review, Library Management, or Journal of Documentation, within the years of 2005-2011. The method used is the critical discourse analysis, mostly inspired by Norman Fairclough.  The critical discourse analysis is different from the discourse analysis since it acknowledge the ability of changes. Thus, this study focus more on processes of change than other discourse analysis within the field of LIS (Library and Information Science).

Four discourses were found in the selected source material – the Social Plurality Discourse, the IT- Pedagogical Discourse, the Market Discourse and the Expert Discourse. A positive view of user participation in library activities was found in the first three of these, even if the Social Plurality Discourse often presented a critical view on the technological emphasis in Library 2.0. The Expert Discourse has a negative approach to user participation in general, and especially to user tagging functions in Library 2.0. The Expert Discourse is the most common in the texts published in 2011 and often uses arguments based on practical experiences that show that the users, so far, have not participated in Library 2.0-services. These arguments have the potential to cause change in the discourse practice of the other discourses here presented. However, the frame of this study is to narrow to evaluate if such a change has actually taken place.

The study also shows that the different discourses often have different meanings about what the user wants and needs. There might be a risk that the position “user” is being exploited to legitimate the mission that each discourse claims to be the most important for the library.

Vad betyder läsfrämjande?: En kvalitativ studie över det läsfrämjande begreppets narrativa uppbyggnad på svenska folkbibliotek.2018Självständigt arbete på avancerad nivå (masterexamen), 20 poäng / 30 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this master thesis is to examine the Swedish term for reading promotion, läsfrämjande, and gain a greater understanding for the meanings inherent in the word. To do this, narrative theory in the form if Harding's typology of six different types of narratives arranged on a scale from general to particular has been used for the analysis. The study focuses on librarians that work with children and young adults in public libraries and their rela-tionships with reading promotion. On the surface the Swedish word for reading promotion is simple, but exam-ined closely it becomes apparent that it is in fact multifaceted. The word consists of many different narratives that interact and in different ways change and affect each other. This study has identified five different types of collective narratives connected to the word läsfrämjande. These are the democratic narrative, the narrative of qualitative litterateur, reading for the soul, the enabling narrative and the literacy narrative. Together with the other types of narratives these form the basis of the personal narrative the librarians form around their reading promotion work and the word läsfrämjande. The personal narrative connected to the word will always be unique to the individual librarian, and it is be-cause of this that the word is so hard to define. The meaning will differ in small ways between different people, but because the personal narratives are built from the same collective narratives there will appear to be consensus in the meaning. This study has been produced as a two years master’s thesis in Library and Information Science.

    Abstract [en]

    Abstract

In this master´s thesis I primarily investigate librarians´ and teachers´ conceptions of collaboration between libraries and schools and their conceptions of childrens´reading. Secondary I investigate the contents of laws concerning libraries and schools and also the school curriculums concerning the subject field of the Swedish language. My theoretical point of departure is that of social constructionism. I use two models in my analysis. One is a model of collaboration created by Patricia Montiel-Overall, called TLC (Teacher Librarian Collaboration), which grades collaboration from the lowest level (A) to the highest (D). The other model is created by Staffan Thorsson and is a model for understanding different kinds of reading strategies. I chose to study one public library and one elementary school. At the public library I interviewed the manager, the children´s librarian and the literature pedagogue. At the elementary school I interviewed the headmaster, two teachers who are teaching the Swedish language (one junior-level teacher and one senior-level teacher) and the school librarian. I used a hermeneutical method when I analyzed both my interviews and the laws and curriculums mentioned above.

In my analysis I discovered all levels of collaboration, except for the highest one (D). Everyone, except for the school librarian, seemed more or less content with the lower degrees of collaboration. The teachers´ perceptions of the librarians were quite traditional. Even though all of the librarians had previous teaching experience and education they were not seen as pedagogues by the teachers. Especially in the case of the school librarian this became a problem, because it seemed to inhibit a development of the collaboration between them. In the laws and curriculums that I looked into collaboration between schools and libraries were never mentioned. The reading promotion seemed to be based on two strategies: pragmatical and emancipatorical. The pragmatical strategy led to looking at children as “becomings”, the emancipatorical one led to looking at children as “beings”.

    Abstract [en]

This master’s thesis looks at discourses that use the pronoun ”hen”. The media debate in Sweden over this pronoun in 2012 started in connection with the publishing of a children’s picture book: Kivi och monsterhund, by Jesper Lundqvist and Bettina Jansson. The essay investigates how eight librarians, who take an interest in and work with gender issues, talk about the pronoun hen and about this picture book and other books that have characters which are not named as a sex/gender.

The essay takes a discursive perspective on reality and on the construction of knowledge and carries out a discourse analysis of the librarians’ talk in the qualitative interviews that were made for this study. In the analysis of these interviews Yvonne Hirdman’s theory of the gender system takes a central part.

The result of the analysis is seven discourses that are central to the librarians talk about books and gender and where the pronoun hen is a focus or a related issue. The essay argues that gender categorization is a dominant discourse in our western society and that certain uses of the pronoun hen, especially the discourse named as the Human-discourse, challenges this domination. The discourses that most librarians used were within the reasoning of the dominant discourse of gender categorization. A conclusion is that the meaning of the pronoun hen is not determined by any one discourse but that there may be a political intervention working towards integrating the pronoun hen into the dominant discourse of gender categorization and thereby neutralising the pronoun.

    Abstract [en]

This two years master's thesis in Library and Information science, examines how the implementation of new technical equipment can affect how staff in public libraries organize their work and activities in the library. One Swedish public library in specific is the subject of research in this thesis, which has been anonymized as Kvarntuna city library. The study takes place in the beginning of the implementation of RFID-technology in the library. RFID, which stands for Radio Frequency Identification, is supposed to make the handling with different types of media in the library more efficient and in connection with the implementation one wants to reorganize work and activities in the library to make it even more efficient and also create a modern library.

The thesis' method is qualitative interviews with six members of the staff. The theoretical framework of the thesis is a sociocultural perspective, especially inspiered by Roger Säljö, a Swedish professor in pedagogical psychology. The sociocultural perspective emphasizes physical and intellectual tools as important components in everything people do, for example when learning, thinking, taking action and interacting with others in different contexts. Tools has an medieting effect. The thesis' result and analysis is presented thematically in different levels of contexts: the mental context, the physical context, the communicative context and the historical context.

The sociocultural perspective makes it possible to understand the implementation of RFID in itself, rather than the actual technology, as a tool that is used to change the way work is organized in the library. It can also be seen as a screen through which it is possible for the interviewed staff to think and reflect how a different way of organizing the work would be. Some statements indicate that it is difficult to see what could change in the way the work is organized when implementing RFID, and all of the interviewed persons make some kind of statement that they know little about what a different way of organizing the work is or that it is too early in the implementation to tell or know something about that. However, what was expressed in the interviews indicates that the implementation is a tool in the making and the implementation itself can be seen as the reorganized way of work or a start of it. This is since tools has an developing effect on both actions, thoughts and organizations. Therefore we can see a discrepancy between what the interviewed persons first said, and what they later expressed. Finally, from a sociocultural point of view one can see that people have a big opportunity to control tools, in libraries too, and use them according to their purposes. Technology is therefore not a threat to libraries' existence, but can rather be seen as an opportunity to develop the organization.

"Wow, nu har jag äntligen gjort nånting som det förväntas av en förälder att göra": En studie av Godnattsagor inifrån.2019Självständigt arbete på avancerad nivå (masterexamen), 20 poäng / 30 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

This master's thesis examines how the social activity of the library with books and literature can strengthen the contact between imprisoned fathers and their children. The project Godnattsagor inifrån has been studied from three different perspectives, the library, criminal authorities and the prisoners with their children. Interviews were conducted with the different actors of the project. The perspective social constructivism and the concept literacy practice were used to analyze the interviews and the project.

In the prison reading program Godnattsagor inifrån the fathers choose a story from a children’s storybook and read the text, the story is recorded on a CD and sent to the child on the outside. The project attempts to create or strengthen the bonds between fathers and children with help of reading experiences. The fathers take part in a study circle where they are introduced to the library activities and practice how to read out loud to their children. This also includes reading and appreciating literature for themselves.

I have noticed that Godnattsagor inifrån can inspire children to be reading people. It has also been noticed that the project can have the same impact on the prisoner´s identity. The cooperation between the prison, the library and the families increase the possibilities for both the children and their fathers. My knowledge contribution is to show how important reading is and why. What happens to the individual when given the opportunity to read?

    Abstract [sv]

Price revisited: on the growth of dissertations in eight research fields2011Ingår i: Scientometrics, ISSN 0138-9130, E-ISSN 1588-2861, Vol. 88, nr 2, s. 371-383Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

This paper studies the production of dissertations in eight research fields in the natural sciences, the social sciences and the humanities. In using doctoral dissertations it builds on De Solla Prices seminal study which used PhD dissertations as one of several indicators of scientific growth (Price, Little science, big science, 1963). Data from the ProQuest: Dissertations and Theses database covering the years 1950-2007 are used to depict historical trends, and the Gompertz function was used for analysing the data. A decline in the growth of dissertations can be seen in all fields in the mid-eighties and several fields show only a modest growth during the entire period. The growth profiles of specific disciplines could not be explained by traditional dichotomies such as pure/applied or soft/hard, but rather it seems that the age of the discipline appears to be an important factor. Thus, it is obvious that the growth of dissertations must be explained using several factors emerging both inside and outside academia. Consequently, we propose that the output of dissertations can be used as an indicator of growth, especially in fields like the humanities, where journal or article counts are less applicable.

    Abstract [en]

Introduction. The purpose is to discuss values, expressed in the architecture and planning documents of four recent cultural centres in Sweden, and how these values influence the public libraries.

Method. The method is a case study using content analysis of documents from all four cities and empirical findings from observations in Askersund and Värnamo.

Analysis. The theoretical perspectives are based on the theories of fields and doxa by Pierre Bourdieu and the theory of space by David Harvey.

Results. From around the year 2000 cultural centres were built increasingly with the aim to support creativity and place branding. Twenty years later that trend has been strengthened and cultural centres are being built as architectural portraits of cities, supporting tourism, innovation and economic growth. Town squares are symbols for meetings, markets and democracy. The names and physical appearance of Sjöängen, Gummifabriken, Sara kulturhus and Karls Krona represent local history and the architects have also expressed values about sustainability and functional estetics. The public libraries seem to benefit from being located within these new cultural centres as regards to lending statistics and programmes for the public. The mission for democracy, the principle of free entry and the intrinsic value of literature, however, must be preserved in today´s amusement park like style of cultural centres.

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this two years master thesis in Library and information science is to study the foundation Centrum för lättläst and its work regarding information use with focus on information structures and information needs. The aim is also to examine how Centrum för lättläst cooperate with Swedish libraries to promote the work concerning people with reading disabilities. This master thesis applies a domain analytic theory and method inspired by Birger Hjørland. The domain analysis is confined to examine ontology, epistemology, sociology, empirical user studies, document and genre studies and studies of structures and institutions in scientific communication. The main source material consists of information from the homepage of Centrum för lättläst. The result of the domain analysis describes the ontology which implies to produce easy-to-read texts. The epistemology constitutes of regulations from the Swedish government regarding the work with easy-to-read literacy. The sociology represents several organizations and authorities connected to easy-to-read literacy. The domain analysis has also identified Centrum för lättläst’s target groups and their information needs which are varying. The study present numerous of strategies composed by Centrum för lättläst to satisfy the information needs of the target groups. Furthermore; the domain analysis has distinguished the information resources Centrum för lättläst use to distribute and make information accessible which are represented by documents within the domain. The result also shows that Centrum för lättläst’s work with information use includes important operators in the domain which contributes to endorse the information needs of the targets groups. Finally the domain analysis has examined the collaboration between Centrum för lättläst and libraries in Sweden, where the result illustrate procedures made by Centrum för lättläst in order to assist libraries in their work with easy-to-read literacy and the target groups.

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this two-years master’s thesis is to examine the role of the body and the importance of nonverbal communication in the library workplace and to explore the possibility of becoming more nonverbally skilled. For this purpose a course was developed and presented to nine librarians in a public library in the vicinity of Stockholm in February, 2011. Qualitative interviews with the librarians were conducted after the course.

Important theories for this work were Annemaree Lloyd’s thoughts on corporeality, Erving Goffman’s dramaturgical sociology and John Dewey’s learning by doing. Theories concerning what communication and nonverbal communication really are were essential, as was literature that shows that nonverbal communication is an important aspect in the profession of the librarian.

Nonverbal signals of importance in the library setting were identified as being mainly eye contact, smiling, bodily movement towards the library user, tone of voice, proxemics (spatial distances), chronemics (time) and haptics (touch). The study also shows that the design of the library and librarians’ worktools interact with the possibility to communicate nonverbally.

The course consisted of exercises normally used in the training of actors. This was based on the theory of Erving Goffman. The learning process was an example of situated learning in that it took place in the library. It also gave the participants an opportunity to share their knowledge and experience of nonverbal skills with each other. After the course the participants were given questionnaires with questions about their attitudes and experiences of nonverbal communication and their view on the course. After a week a follow-up questionnaire was distributed, in order to find out if the course had in any way had an impact on their work performance.

The investigation shows that nonverbal skills play an important role in the work of the librarian. Training in these skills has long been neglected, since they have for the most part been taken for granted. This study shows, however, that this kind of training is important. The librarians who took part in the course testify that the exercises gave them valuable practice. Nonverbal skills can be taught and learned: and “it is time to bring the body back into the information field”.

    Abstract [en]

This study examines how women are represented in exhibitions about the ancient cultures of Greece, Rome and Egypt. The two museums which have been studied are the Museum of Mediterranean and Near Eastern Antiquities in Stockholm and the British Museum in London. Observations of the exhibitions, notes and interviews with museum personnel are the methods used in this study. The theory used is gender theory, focussing on Yvonne Hirdman’s gender system.

The purpose of the study is to examine how the museums are working with representing women in ancient cultures, what objects are exhibited that relates to women and how museum teachers include women in tours. The study shows that women are represented in different degrees in the exhibitions and are much less included in texts. The Museum of Mediterranean and Near Eastern Antiquities have the ambition and interest from the personnel to review their exhibits to include a broader perspective where women are better represented.

    Abstract [en]

This master´s thesis presents a study of female immigrants. Using a qualitative method I sought knowledge and understanding of these women´s information behaviour.  The purpose of this paper was to study the user group´s information need, use and seek. It was an interesting aspect to see what barriers they felt themselves struggle against in situations of seeking information. Another aspect was to find out their likenesses and differences in terms of need, use and seek. Finally I wanted to explore what experiences the user group had of the library and how it can develop it´s activity to better suit the immigrants. The theoretical procedure has taken support from the theories and work of Pierre Bourdieu. Among other things it was possible to state that the social sphere of the women played a big part in their information seeking behaviour. The circle of friends and family were in fact the biggest source of information. The study shows that the govenment has been absent and that the immigrants lacked a lot of information since the arrival to Sweden. It has also been proved that a few of these women live in absence of vital information. A fact which is related to Chatman´s small world theory. It means that these women are locked in a situation without access to information and that the information that they do seek and find is only what they need the most. They never find out more than they really need and thereby can´t explore the options they could have had. In the group there were variations in terms of use of libraries. The libraries need above all to introduce themselves and their activity better to these immigrants. Parts of the study group struggle with the Swedish language every day, they lack an outcome for their interests and wishes to gain more computer skills. The libraries need to present fields in which the group has interests but don´t access of participate in. If the libraries do provide this, that could lead to finding new meeting points where more people could be included and thereby expand the target group of the library.

    Abstract [en]

This study sheds light on an interface between the concepts of museum and religion, based on case studies of two churches located at open-air museums: Seglora kyrka at Skansen in Stockholm and Murbergskyrkan at Murberget in Härnösand. These represent two types of museum churches, where Seglora kyrka originally was built för religious use within the Church of Sweden, while Murbergskyrkan originally was built by an open-air museum.

This has been done through studies of both the biographies of the churches, to understand the changes in identities that they have undergone during their lives, and the use of the churches today, to understand possible conflicts between pedagogical and religious use of churches at museums. The research has been carried out as a methodological bricolage, where printed sources have been combined with interviews with museum employees and observations of the churches.

Based on the biographies of the churches, it can be stated that Seglora kyrka has gone through several changes, to when transferred to Skansen be assigned its present identities as both a museum object and a religious object. Murbergskyrkan has always been assigned these parallel identities. Both churches are still used both pedagogically and religiously, and assigned identities as both museum objects and religious objects. The different uses of the churches do sometimes stand in conflict. Religious practice can go against a museal conservational mission. Pedagogical use of religious objects can be a subject of debate, for example when programs aimed for schools take place in religious buildings.

Churches are located at several open-air museums, in Sweden and internationally, and are often included in both educational and religious use. Awareness of possible conflicts between pedagogical and religious use of churches should hence be required from museum educators and employees.

    Abstract [en]

In the new Library Act of 2014, it is stated that public library supply should be characterized by quality. To investigate what this means for the library, I do a functional analysis of ideas of librarians' views on quality and how they work with purchasing, weeding and mediation. I have chosen to limit the essay to fiction for adults in Swedish public libraries. By combining the basal idea analysis, where I investigate librarians' ideas about quality, with an operational analysis of ideas, where I examine the effects librarians' quality ideas get for the daily work, Iwant to find out the librarians' quality ideals.

The material I analyze consists of 18 questionnaires, filled out by librarians with responsibility for purchasing and / or thinning in libraries across Sweden. The analysis is done with an analytical schedule, that consists of a number of opposing ideal types taken from previous research on quality, purchasing, thinning or mediation. In this way I want to show how librarians quality idea and practical work relate to previous quality ideas and ways of working.

The result shows two in many ways opposing ideas of quality: craftsmanship, where quality sits in the work's aesthetic, and impact on the reader, where quality arrisis in the meeting with the reader. Put in context, idea number one can be seen in quality definitions where quality is seen as relatively objective, where experts best can judge a work's quality. The second quality idea is often associated with a user-defined and subjective quality. One can also see how it is a special kind of impact, development, that is associated with quality.

If we look instead at the operational analysis we can see how librarians, especially in the work of purchasing, promote the popular, both in terms of authors, titles and genres. The librarians purchase a lot on demand and use circulation figures to see what needs to be purchased: that which it lent much. Popularity rather than quality is what decides what should be purchased, except for literature of very low quality that is not bought at all. Also in weeding circulation figures is used; even though literature of very high quality is moved to the magazine instead of beeing weeded. Regarding the mediation of literature, librarians to some extent try to lead their users toward literature of higher quality, but they are careful not to judge neither reader or literature. When giving advice on literature, it is from one reader to another. It is important that the readers themselves choose what and how they want to read. User influence is what steer the work of purchase, weeding and mediation.

The librarians quality ideas only to a very limited extent influence the librarians practical work, why I believe that it is impossible to speak of a quality ideal. Instead I want to describe the librarians' way of thinking about the library's literature as a value ideal. Furthermore, I would call the librarians value ideal a customer-driven value ideal, where the user is seen as an enlightened and well-informed customer with both the right and the knowledge to determine what the library should purchase and prioritize.

    Abstract [en]

This study examines the closure of public libraries, and the nonprofit organizations takeover of them as a phenomenon. The aim is to understand why the nonprofit takeover is common and what the takeover symbolizes and if the discourse in media invokes the views on libraries and the profession.Interviews were made with librarians, politicians and representatives of a nonprofit organization to study different sides of the phenomenon. Other empirical data were found in local and national newspapers and media-channels. I discovered that public libraries are highly valued by both politicians and the community. The study also showed that a library in a community makes people feel valued. It is often the economical problems of the communities that increases the risk of library closures. The politicians request in media, where they sometimes demand nonprofit organizations to take over library activity, can reflect upon the value of the profession and the opinions about the field. The takeover seems to be an effort of keeping the symbol that the library represents in the community and it also seems to be a symbol for the community. The symbol is for example associated with a democratic meeting-place, education and integration. The librarian is associated with good service.
    Abstract [en]

The emotional part of a museum experience is being debated and there is research pointing towards the affective part of learning. The purpose of this study is to examine how museum pedagogues reason about the usage of affective learning in their work and to investigate whether they consider affective pedagogy is a part of their work or not. Furthermore how they consider themselves working, or not working, with feelings in their pedagogy.

A key factor in this study has been to work interdisciplinary with both museum pedagogy and social science with theoretical perspectives of feelings such as happiness, sadness, anger, disgust and fear, and with theories such as Feelings & materiality and Pedagogy of Feeling. Methodologically a qualitative interview study museum pedagogues have been used together with observation of four Swedish state- and country museums.

In this thesis it is shown that the interviewed museum pedagogues indeed have acknowledged the fact that the museum is an affective place, but the interviewed had different way of make use of feelings. They all agree on the fact that feelings can support the learning process, and that all the different feelings have their own effect on learning. Also that the museum pedagogues have some influence on the feeling that the exhibitions are to emit, which could be used in the pedagogues favor if the exhibition consists of hard and problematic feelings. However, in contrast to this it seems that few of the museum pedagogues discuss the affective influence of a upcoming exhibition or program, or evaluate a project in what feeling the visitors experienced during the visit.

    Abstract [en]

This thesis examines how images are used and evaluated in a Swedish archival context. Images as of today are very common in society. They are nearly everywhere, particularly in our phones and computers. Therefore the written word is slowly losing it's sovereignty as a carrier of information. With this background the study examines if the images role also have changed in an archival setting.

The following work is a qualitative research study that examines three Swedish archives: the Regional State Archive in Uppsala, Swedish Labour Movement's Archives and Library in Stockholm and the Centre for Business History in Stockholm. Furthermore the study examines how the institutions organize images and how they make them accessible for the public. It also examines what role the image play as a carrier of information in the archive. In more general terms the study also investigates what function the image can have for people in society. The comparison of the archival institutions is a methodological foundation for this study. Semi- structured interviews were conducted with archivists from the three institutions and works as the main source. For the analysis this study uses document theory and a few concepts derived from Terry Cook's archival theory, namely evidence, memory, identity and community.

In terms with the previous research made on the subject this study comes to the result that images have different terms for archiving than other materials, most specifically papers documents. The examined archival institutions are today using the same tools for organizing images as they use for other documents. This can have negative effects on the ability the image has as a carrier of information. In the long run this could cause the image to become a marginalized part of the archive as a whole.

The conclusion this mater's thesis presents is that the image has a potential as a source of information. Especially for groups that aren't previously represented in the archive through traditional paper documents. The image may therefore contribute to the archival pluralism and diversity, as long as the images are treated with the terms they demand as an archival document.

    Abstract [en]

This thesis focuses on the cooperation of the archive and the school. The theoretical framework is socio-cultural perspective. The main method used is qualitative interviews with employees at the archives. I have studied three different archives which, in cooperation with the school, conduct archival education. In addition to the interviews I have participated in two observations. The research found that there was a great interest in the school to participate in the archive's educational work. Factors such as stress for the teachers and too few archive educational resources adversely affect the archive education mission. The views look different, but the goal is to present archives to the students and provide a positive experience. The fact that archives are to be regarded as an obvious place of visit, was the democratic right of citizens, and that information is being discussed what the archives want to convey to archive education. The archival material used by the archives has a clear link with the curricula and places great emphasis on teaching source criticism.

    Abstract [en]

In this two years master's thesis, discourse analytic tools have been used in an analysis of the construction ofusers with disability in four Stockhholm-based library plans. The analysis has been aimed at investigating whatimage of people with disabilities that emerge in the texts and how it can be related to the libary plans perceptionof normality. One purpose was to examine to what extent users with disabilities are included as full blown usersin the texts and if not, how they are constructed as a deviation. The theoretical foundation of this thesis is made up by the discourse theories of Laclau and Mouffe withaddition of Michel Foucault's theory of the docile body. By virtue of these theories one of the aims has been touncover the constructionist traits of the library plans exception of disability. The main questions this study seeks to answer are; how are users categorized in the library plans, which usergroups are mentioned and how are users with disabilities portrayed? Furthermore, the essay means to discoverthe most prominent user discourses in the library plans and to investigate how the portrayal of people withdisabilities can be related to the conception of normality and general user discourses. These questions are to be answered firstly by an investigation of user categorization, which is aimed at theconstruction and analysis of user taxonomies and consequences regarding the identity of disability. Secondly, using Laclau and Mouffes discourse theory as a methodological foundation a chain of eqivalense is created toreveal the main characteristics regarding users with disabilities. The analysis also focuses on user discourses, which are grouped into two main areas with themes revolvingaround the individual and the market, and collective groups and culture. Affiliated with the former is a marketorienteddiscourse, containing themes of, among others, the mediation of information and accentuation of ICTservices. In the latter a discourse that revolved around the reading of books emerged. Besides this there was alsoan accentuation of the library as a public room, various participatory activities and cultural experiences. Acomparison between discourse and the image of users with disabilities was undertaken which revealed differentlevels of coherence, resulting in either exclusion or inclusion.
