Mitigating the lack of prior entrepreneurial experience and exposure through entrepreneurship education programs2023In: International Journal of Entrepreneurial Behaviour & Research, ISSN 1355-2554, E-ISSN 1758-6534, Vol. 30, no 11, p. 19-44Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

    Purpose

To increase the understanding of how entrepreneurship education impacts entrepreneurial careers, the purpose of the paper is to investigate the role that a venture creation program (VCP) might have in mitigating or surpassing a lack of other antecedents of entrepreneurial careers. In particular, the authors focus on entrepreneurial pedigree and prior entrepreneurial experience.

    Design/methodology/approach

Data from graduates of VCPs at three universities in Northern Europe were collected through an online survey. Questions addressed graduate background prior to education, yearly occupational employment subsequent to graduation and graduates' own perceptions of entrepreneurial activity in employment positions. The survey was sent to 1,326 graduates and received 692 responses (52.2% response rate).

    Findings

The type of VCP, either independent (Ind-VCP) or corporate venture creation (Corp-VCP), influenced the mitigation of prior entrepreneurial experience. Prior entrepreneurial experience, together with Ind-VCP, made a career as self-employed more likely. However, this was not the case for Corp-VCP in subsequently choosing intrapreneurial careers. Entrepreneurial pedigree had no significant effect on career choice other than for hybrid careers.

    Research limitations/implications

Entrepreneurial experience gained from VCPs seems to influence graduates toward future entrepreneurial careers. Evidence supports the conclusion that many VCP graduates who lack prior entrepreneurial experience or entrepreneurial pedigree can develop sufficient entrepreneurial competencies through the program.

    Originality/value

This study offers novel evidence that entrepreneurship education can compensate for a lack of prior entrepreneurial experience and exposure for students preparing for entrepreneurial careers.

    Abstract [en]

This chapter focuses on young children’s use of digital technologies and on participation in situated digital literacy practices within and across activities and institutional settings. First, we present a review of research focusing on digital literacy as embedded in children’s everyday lives and on multimodal engagements with and around digital technologies together with peers, siblings and adults. Second, we explore three mundane activities involving different participant constellations, technologies and settings, using an ethnomethodological and conversation analytic approach in order to discuss theoretical challenges related to the idea that digital literacies are situated.

What were you thinking? A methodological approach for exploring decision-making and learning in physical education2019In: Sport, Education and Society, ISSN 1357-3322, E-ISSN 1470-1243, Vol. 24, no 8, p. 828-840Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The broad purpose of this paper is to consider the relationship betweendecision-making and learning. Specifically, our aim is to propose amethodology that provides a theoretical framing along with proceduresfor investigating this relationship in Physical Education (PE). By utilizingselected parts of John Dewey’s educational theories, the paper presentsa theoretical exposition of decision-making as an individual processcontaining both ‘practical’ and ‘cognitive’ aspects. By combining thistheoretical conceptualization with a description of concrete researchmethods, the paper proposes a methodological approach enablingresearchers to get empirically closer to the phenomenon of individualdecision-making within PE learning. We argue that by doing so,researchers in the field of PE can study certain aspects of learning notexplicitly emphasized within existing methodological approaches.

Öppna datorskärmen!: En kvalitativ studie om hur elever i F-1 använder digitala verktyg i processen vid läs- och skrivinlärning i ämnet svenska2020Independent thesis Advanced level (professional degree), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Engagement in educational games and quality of life in early and middle childhood: evidence from a developing country2023In: Current Psychology, ISSN 1046-1310, E-ISSN 1936-4733, Vol. 42, p. 19386-19400Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Serious games (SGs), are gaining prominence as a tool for early education at home as well as in school settings. Given the mixed effects of gamification on various aspects of users' lives, it is pertinent to study its broader effects on a child's pre-school and school years. Given the lack of consensus on a comprehensive measure that encapsulates these effects on an individual's routine functioning, the present study examined whether various engagement states in SGs use influence a relatively broader measure of users' functioning across significant life domains such as Quality of Life (QoL). It is argued that it would serve scholars, teachers, and parents better to understand the broader implications of SGs on children's overall QoL rather than isolated physiological and behavioral effects. Consequently, utilizing structural equation modeling, results from 335 parents of 2-10-year-olds in a developing country showed that cognitive and behavioral engagement in gamified applications appear to influence the child's QoL, but not affective engagement. Results are discussed in terms of the consequences of using game-based technology for a child's development, with far-reaching academic, personal, physical, and social implications not only for the school-going ages, but also for early teenage years. The results are promising in relation to QoL. The findings indicate the role modern technology plays in improving individuals' lives. The findings provide scholars, parents, and creators of SGs important information for their plan of action regarding children's exposure to SGs and making SGs a frequent aspect of the learning experience early in life.

Elevers perspektiv på motiverande matematikundervisning i grundskolans tidigare år2020Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

Exploring Young Adult Literature Integration in English Textbooks: A Comparative Analysis2024Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This study examines the integration of Young Adult Literature (YAL) in three textbooks, BluePrint A version 3.0, Worldwide English 5, and ViewPoint 1. It aims to compare how these textbooks seek to utilize YAL and its accompanying exercises to enhance language proficiency. Additionally, it assesses how they leverage YAL's distinctive qualities, such as self-discovery, emotional experiences, and relatability to young readers, while assessing their alignment with the English 5 syllabus objectives for consistency. The results reveal varying levels of YAL representation, with each textbook leveraging YAL to enhance comprehension, critical thinking, and language development. BluePrint A version 3.0 emphasizes "Reflect & Share" exercises, while Worldwide English 5 uses structured activities, and ViewPoint 1 integrates thematic exercises across language skills. Exercise alignment with the syllabus varies, highlighting diverse strategies in YAL integration. This essay highlights the diverse strategies in integrating YAL and investigates whether its distinctive qualities are effectively utilized in textbooks. Further research could explore teachers' methods of integrating YAL into classroom instruction with these textbooks.

    Abstract [en]

In this survey, a number of recent studies were reviewed to assess the impact of using assistive technology in teaching students diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder. The survey investigates the possible beneficial effects of such technology in terms of academic learning as well as in terms of social integration of students in the years 4-6 (ages 9 -13). The role of Autism Spectrum Disorder in limiting the learning abilities and social skills of diagnosed students is covered, explaining the factors most relevant within this context. Recent studies were chosen as they dealt with more recent technological tools that are relevant today, with the exclusion of older forms of technology that are deemed obsolete. The different forms of technology used in these studies are taken into consideration, both simple and advanced forms were reviewed, and the results were examined critically. In addition, different sample sizes were also considered, ranging from single cases to relatively bigger samples. The findings do confirm that the use of assistive technology does help improve the social and academic performance of autistic students to varying degrees and that improvements are felt by the educators as well as parents and caregivers. Attention was given to the factors influencing the choice of the technological tools used in assisting autistic students. The survey further considers the limitations and setbacks that can occur with the use of technology

Värdegrundsarbete i skolan: Hur kan man arbeta med värdegrundsfrågor i religionsämnet?2021Independent thesis Basic level (professional degree), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Creative writing and how it can support second language learners2022Independent thesis Basic level (professional degree), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The current study investigates what recent research tells us as to how creative writing can support language learning in English as a second language (ESL) classrooms at the primary and secondary levels. The results show that teachers must implement a variety of approaches when structuring creative writing lessons to help reach the knowledge requirements in the syllabus for English. Furthermore, the presented studies establish that creative writing is an excellent method to develop writing skills and encourage pupils to write. This investigation also shows that implementing creative writing into ESL classrooms helped develop vocabulary, grammar, and imagination. Finally, it appears that confident pupils are more likely to enjoy a creative writing class and advance faster in their language learning.

Mastering Vocabulary: - Teachers' views on vocabulary in written and spoken form2024Independent thesis Advanced level (professional degree), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This study explores vocabulary assessment approaches and their alignment with curriculumgoals, alongside the influence of national tests on language education strategies. Throughinterviews with five teachers and relevant literature review, the research highlights thecomplexities inherent in language education. Emphasizing comprehension over rotememorization emerges as a consensus among teachers, echoing Schmitt and Diane'sperspective (1993). Criticisms of glossary exams underscore concerns about surface-levellearning and its impact on critical thinking. Aligning with Firda et al.'s (2021) study, teachersprioritize assessing fundamental language skills to enhance speaking, listening, reading, andwriting abilities. The study identifies a recurring theme of aligning teaching practices with theSwedish curriculum, emphasizing creativity, adaptability, and inclusivity. Teachers'approaches reflect the curriculum's call for thematic lessons and diverse languagedevelopment opportunities, balancing written and oral proficiency, while acknowledging theinfluence of national tests.

    Abstract [sv]

"200 meter, varav 50 meter i ryggläge": – En studie om utvalda skolors simkunnighet i årskurs 62014Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Syfte

    – Hur ser simkunnigheten ut bland elever i årskurs 6?

    Metod

A Remote Mode High Quality International Master Degree Program in Environomical Pathways for Sustainable Energy Systems (SELECT) -Pilot Program Experiences During First Year of Studies2018In: PROCEEDINGS OF 2018 IEEE GLOBAL ENGINEERING EDUCATION CONFERENCE (EDUCON) - EMERGING TRENDS AND CHALLENGES OF ENGINEERING EDUCATION, IEEE , 2018, p. 276-284Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Remote mode study programs at master degree level are becoming more popular than undergraduate level programs. Students after graduation with Bachelors degree very often are employed and the most appropriate mode for them to pursue higher studies is the remote mode. Postgraduate programs with one or two year duration mostly focus on specific areas of research based industrial application. Traditional remote education is thought to be more centered on web based on-line programs with a little opportunity for teacher student interaction and interaction with peers. In such programs motivation for studies has been a problem and as a result many students drop off and also those remain in the program for prolonged periods do not show good performance. One of the reasons for failures of students in remote studies is the isolation leading to discouragement for the completion studies. A remote mode Master Degree Program in Environomical Pathways for Sustainable Energy Systems (MSc-SELECT), consisting of a number of innovative features aimed at improved student engagement, motivation, exposure to experiences in multi-national setting and team work, was developed and implemented by the Master School of the EIT-InnoEnergy, as a pilot project. The program was offered, collaboratively and simultaneously to students in three locations, Royal Institute of Technology in Sweden, Universitat Politecnica de Catalunya in Spain and the Open University of Sri Lanka. The students in Sweden and Spain each followed 50% of the courses on-campus and 50% in remote mode depending upon the university they registered with. The students in Sri Lanka followed the entire 1st year fully remotely. All the students (from KTH, OUSL and UPC) will spend the 2nd year on-campus at another university in the consortium. This paper discusses, from the perspective of the fully remote site, the remote program with its innovative aspects, student performance and experience together with future tasks for making the program viable and beneficial to all partner countries.

    Abstract [en]

This study aims to investigate the effects of cooperative learning on pupils’ knowledge and development with a particular focus on concepts and conceptual understanding in mathematics. By employing both qualitative and quantitative research methods, the study compared the effectiveness of cooperative learning to traditional teaching approaches in grade 4. The following question was formulated to research the aim of this study:

    • How does pupils’' understanding of concepts in mathematics differ after traditional teaching compared to teaching with cooperative learning in grade 4?

Svanelid’s (2014) three aspects were used as an analysis model in this intervention study. With the analysis model, teachers can assess whether pupils have understood various mathematical concepts. The results of the aim showed that cooperative learning had a significant positive impact on pupils’ learning and their understanding of geometrical concepts. Through collaborative activities and interactive discussions, pupils actively participated in the learning process, leading to improved comprehension and retention of geometric concepts. However due to introduction of methodological weaknesses and potential biases the results can not be considered as statistically sound.

The study indicated development in pupils’ learning and understanding of mathematics. In an attempt to pursue the main aim of this study, traditional teaching and cooperative learning were used as teaching techniques for pupils to study the development of their learning. After each teaching method, tests were used to identify the results of the analysis. The results indicated progression in the pupils’ learning by using cooperative teaching. Teachers are encouraged to further investigate cooperative learning techniques in their lessons as it potentially can increase pupils’ learning. More research is needed to establish a correlation between the use of cooperative learning in the teaching of mathematical concepts.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of the study is to examine how teachers at secondary school work with book reviews in their teaching, what they consider the intent of book reviews to be and what methods they consider to be favourable in the work. This is a qualitative study in which semi-structured interviews have been conducted with eight teachers to demonstrate similarities and differences between their different approaches and mindset. After the interviews have been transcribed, they are analysed on the basis of a thematic analysis. The results show that the teachers have a predominantly positive attitude towards book reviews. However, there is an ambiguity among them, while they consider that book reviews are a favourably element that can include several important knowledge development elements, they also consider that the element should not take up too much space in the teaching as there are other things that need more space. The idea of book reviews does not seem to be to develop students' knowledge of book reviewing as a genre, however they are used more as an implement to verify students' reading comprehension and other abilities. The results also show that specific methods are in fact barely used in the writing on book reviews because the intention is more of a controlling nature than developing students' genre knowledge.

    Abstract [sv]

Engströms praktiker i praktiken: en studie om gymnasieelevers praktiktillhörighet utifrån Lars-Magnus Engströms teorier.2016Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

    Aim

The purpose of this study is to research and map Swedish secondary school students’ taste for sports (practice belonging) based on Lars-Magnus Engström’s practice division. The purpose is also to explore how gender, participation in organized sports and socioeconomic capital might be related to practice belonging. The study will also explore what type of learning the different practices contributes to. – How is the practice belonging among Swedish secondary school students? – Is there a relationship between practice belonging and learning?

    Method

A survey was conducted on 270 Swedish secondary school students. The students went to three different schools, all located in the Stockholm suburbs. The results were analyzed in SPSS and significance levels were tried through Pearson’s Chi-Square test. The study’s theoretical base consisted of Bourdieu’s concept of habitus, Vygotsky’s sociocultural learning theory as well as Hirdman’s and Fagrell’s rendering of the gender system.

    Results

Challenge, physical training as well as competition and ranking were practices who most felt a strong belonging to. Skill training was a practice that boys to a larger extent than girls belonged to and movement to music was a practice that girls in a larger extent than boys belonged to. The students who had a higher grade in PE felt a strong practice belonging to all practices but movement to music as well as interaction with animals. There were no significant results between economic capital and practice belonging. Those with a high or semi-high educational capital felt a strong practice belonging for all practices but movement to music, interaction with animals and competition and ranking. The students who were participating in organized sports felt a stronger belonging to all performance practices as well as physical training and skill training than those who weren’t participating in organized sports. The results in the comparison between practice belonging and learning showed that those with strong practice belonging to a greater extent agreed with the assertions connected to the practice’s learning.

    Conclusions

There seems to be differences in practice belonging depending on which gender one belongs to. One’s practice belonging can also differ depending on educational capital and participation in organized sports. It seems to be some practices that to a greater extent lead to a higher grade in PE. The results also indicate that there is learning within each practice.

Estetisk växtvärk: Bildkonstens potential till ett growth mindset2020Independent thesis Basic level (professional degree), 210 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

The Descriptive Phenomenological Psychological Method används som analysmetod.

    Abstract [en]

Within organizations, HR departments work to attract future employees. Another area of work for HR is to promote the origanization’s so-called Employer Branding, a concept that relates to how organizations, as a kind of brand, are seen and perceived by other parties, both potential employees and other organizations. Knowledge about what motivates HR personnel as a professional group, and as potential new employees, and what this professional group considers to be an “attractive” employer needs to be supplemented. The purpose of this study was therefore to gain an increased understanding of what HR personnel’s thoughts, as a professional group, were about what makes an employer perceived as attractive, specifically regarding the areas of motivation and learning at work. Interviews were conducted with eight individuals who, in various forms, work with and have experience from the personnel profession. According to the results, factors such as flexibility, career opportunities, financial compensation and learning contribute to an employer being considered attractive. The results also show that these factors seem to motivate HR personnel. Through interviews, the above factors could be identified regarding what HR personnel considers to be an attractive employer and what motivational factors HR personnel has at work.

    Abstract [sv]

Studien visar hur deltagarna brukar ungdomsspråk i fokusgrupperna.

    Abstract [sv]

Learning physiotherapy: the impact of formal education and professional experience1997Doctoral thesis, monograph (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

The aim is to describe and analyse physiotherapeutic learning through formal education and professional experience. The investigation focuses on the students' ways of experiencing the concepts of Health, Movement, Function and Interaction. Two groups of physiotherapy students at the Faculty of Health Sciences in Linköping, Sweden, were interviewed on two occasions respectively. The interviews were carried during the second and last term of the formal programme and after 18 months of professional experience. Data were analysed according to the phenomenographic approach and to the principles of contextual analysis. The students' conceptions varied qualitatively, but an analysis of the internal relationships between the concepts revealed that the most common perspectives after completing the formal education were consistently holistic or mixed. This pattern was also most common after 18 months of professional work. The subjects' ways of experiencing the Interaction within a patient encounter were described in four main categories; Mutuality, Technicalism, Authority and Juxtaposition. Mutuality and Technicalism denoted an integration of the communicative and problem-solving processes, the former category from a patient-centred and the latter from a physiotherapist-centred perspective. Authority and Juxtaposition denoted a separation of the processes, the former from a physiotherapist-centred perspective and the latter from a patient-centred perspective. Both separated and integrated perspectives were common after completing the formal education. After 18 months of professional practice the Mutuality category dominated.

Theorising simulation in higher education: difficulty for learners as an emergent phenomenon2016In: Teaching in Higher Education, ISSN 1356-2517, E-ISSN 1470-1294, Vol. 21, no 6, p. 613-627Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Despite the widespread interest in using and researching simulation in higher education, little discussion has yet to address a key pedagogical concern: difficulty. A sociomaterial view of learning, explained in this paper, goes beyond cognitive considerations to highlight dimensions of material, situational, representational and relational difficulty confronted by students in experiential learning activities such as simulation. In this paper we explore these dimensions of difficulty through three contrasting scenarios of simulation education. The scenarios are drawn from studies conducted in three international contexts: Australia, Sweden and the UK, which illustrate diverse approaches to simulation and associated differences in the forms of difficulty being produced. For educators using simulation, the key implications are the importance of noting and understanding (1) the effects on students of interaction among multiple forms of difficulty; (2) the emergent and unpredictable nature of difficulty; and (3) the need to teach students strategies for managing emergent difficulty.

    Abstract [en]

INTRODUCTION: Entry-level students' conceptualizations of clinical reasoning can provide a starting point for program planning related to clinical reasoning development with a focus on patient-centered care.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of the study is to explore how physiotherapy students understand clinical reasoning midway through their education. Nine physiotherapy students were interviewed at the end of their third semester.

METHODS: Semi-structured individual interviews were conducted, recorded and transcribed verbatim. A phenomenographic approach to qualitative data analysis, seeking to explore variations in students' conceptions was applied.

RESULTS: The students' ways of understanding clinical reasoning could be described as: 1) the cognitive process of the physiotherapist; and 2) the relational process of the collaborative partnership between the physiotherapist and the patient. A contrastive analysis shows how the cognitive and relational perspectives are developed through the relationships among three dimensions of clinical reasoning: 1) problem-solving; 2) context of working; and 3) own learning.

CONCLUSION: By identifying the critical variation in students' conceptions of clinical reasoning, focus can be placed on pedagogical arrangements to facilitate students' progression toward a person-centered approach.

Nurturing a heritage language: Language-centered practices in mother-child interactions in multilingual families2022Doctoral thesis, comprehensive summary (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

Situated within research on language socialization and family language policy, this thesis explores how young children (2–4 years old) learn their heritage language in multilingual, transnational families, and how multilingualism becomes an integral part of family life. It draws on video-ethnographic fieldwork in three bi/multilingual families in Sweden with preschool-aged children where the mothers speak Russian and the parents aspire to raise children multilingually.

Using a multimodal interactional analysis, the three studies identify and examine recurrent language practices that promote the children’s use of the heritage language, Russian, in mother-child interactions. They approach heritage language maintenance as embedded in mundane activities such as home language lessons during collaboratively accomplished chores (Study I), conversational storytelling during mealtime (Study II), and co-narration during literacy events (Study III).

The analyses focus on the interactional organization of language learning agendas and heritage language socialization environments that are initiated by the mothers to scaffold their children’s learning and use of Russian. In particular, this study illuminates various ways to engage the children in collaborative Russian speech production, including mutually enjoyable embodied performances. Moreover, it is shown in detail how high expectations of children as heritage language speakers and learners and educational efforts are interactionally balanced through relational work.

The findings suggest that the realization of family language policy to support heritage language development relies not only on consistent language choice, frequency of language use, and parental strategies and ideologies, but also on how language choice and language use are embedded in the ongoing activity, how activity formats are organized and appropriated by the children, the position of the child as a speaker vis-à-vis the parent, and affective alignments. The study uncovers an interplay of educational, relational, ideological, and pragmatic dimensions of heritage language socialization in the home. In this way, the thesis contributes to a more nuanced understanding of family language policy and children’s emergent multilingualism as integrated in everyday family life.

    Abstract [en]

    Abstract

    Aim

The aim of this study has been to investigate how a health-profiled school works with its’ health promotion and if the studied school fulfils the stipulated criterias for a health-promoting school.. The more specific issues are:

    1. What are the chareteristic of the school's health promotion?
    2. How does the designated key persons describe their work and responsibilities in the school's health promotion?
    3. What results of the school's health promotive actions are visible?

    Method

A case study method was used to collect data for the study. This case study includes both qualitative interviews and a textual content analysis of related documents (evaluated reports, the school’s business plan and text from the school’s website). The selected school has been based on a strategic sample of schools. Five persons have been interviewed. As a theoretical frame work a sociocultural perspective on learning has been used.

    Results

The school’s healthpromotion has a structure, announced in their business-plan, with a so called Health Team in the lead. Besides that, the school has been certified by Korpen’s health diploma. The school’s Health Team is the main hub of the school's health promotion and consists of the principal, the physical education (PE) teacher, the health educators, the school nurse, and the school restaurant manager. The principal sees himself as the overall responsible for the school's health promoting. The PE-teacher, the health educator, and the school nurse find it natural to work with health promotion within their profession. The restaurant manager, sees his primarily responsibility as to ensure that there is a nutritionally balanced diet offered in the school restaurant. The respondents stated the importance of their role as role models. Communication and engagement are key components in their health promotion. Regarding  aspects of the departure points for the learning of health, it reveals that the Health Team sees the interaction between the individual and context as essential components for their work. It comes foreward that the result of the school’s health promotion work is difficult to assess, or make visible. There have been attempts to measure the impact of the health promotion, but the respondents note that ensuring out comes of health promotion is a long-term goal.

    Conclusion

The conclusion of the study is that the studied school fulfil the existing criteria for a health profiled school. The school has a structure, an organization and a distinct approach to learning about health. From a sociocultural perspective on learning, the school’s health promotion is characterized by an approach to learning as a social, situated and distributed. The key persons’ (the Health team) goal of theír health promoting is to let the students embrace tools and acquire different patterns of health promoting behaviors and actions. The effect or rather the results from their health promoting appear to be difficult to measure and therefore it is important to see the important to see health promotion from a long term perspective.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

Sweden is a multicultural country and because of this the Swedish school-system should be adapted so that all pupils can develop their linguistic skills so that they can participate andunderstand the education. By using scientific work from other researchers and my own experiences from a general point of view, I noticed that pupils with foreign origin perform less good in mathematics than pupils with Swedish origin, in the Swedish education system.

The purpose of this research is to find out if communication and interplay between the pupils makes it easier for them to understand mathematics and its’ concepts. My research involves acertain school class were all pupils have another etnicity then the Swedish one. My aim was to find out if the pupils reached the knowledge-goals for mathematics in the third grade. Especially in the areas of solution solving and the understanding of mathematical texts. I wanted to find out if communication and interplay between the pupils lead to increasedprogress in the Swedish language and increased understanding of mathematical texts. I also examined what possibilities the pupils have to absorb and understand the education and how favourable the conditions are in their teaching process. My starting points were Vygotskijs’ sociocultural perspective. The main research questions were:

    • Is the language a barrier for the pupils in my research group when they develop their mathematical knowledge?
    • Which approach may enhance the pupils knowledge in mathematics?

The research is based on interviews with the teacher and observations of the pupils during mathematic lessons. With the help of the empirical material I wanted to increase myunderstanding about the process of learning and development in the class and about how the teacher labours and reflects around the situation. She practiced silent and individual studies in the class. The result of this research showed that the pupils were not benefited by the teachersmethods and that they did not reach the main goals in Swedish and mathematics for the earlier years in Swedish compulsory school. The reason to this result is mainly that language and learning go hand in hand and that mathematics requires a good vocabulary and good reading comprehension.

What is the word for "Engineering" in Swedish: Swedish students' conceptions of their discipline2007Report (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

Engineering education in Sweden   as in the rest of the world   is experiencing a decline in student interest. There are concerns about the ways in which students think about engineering education, why they join an academic programme in engineering, and why they persist in their studies. In this context the aims of the Nationellt ämnesdidaktiskt Centrum för Teknikutbildning i Studenternas Sammanhang project (CeTUSS) is to investigate the student experience and to identify and support a continuing network of interested researchers, as well as in building capacity for disciplinary pedagogic investigation.

The Stepping Stones project brings together these interests in a multi-researcher, multi-institutional study that investigates how students and academic staff perceive engineering in Sweden and in Swedish education. The first results of that project are reported here. As this study is situated uniquely in Swedish education, it allows for exploration of  a Swedish perspective  on conceptions of engineering. The Stepping Stones project was based on a model of research capacity-building previously instantiated in the USA and Australia (Fincher & Tenenberg, 2006).

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

This paper presents some results within Pedatronics; a fusion between pedagogics and mechatronics. Our research interest is to study what emerges in the play with robotic toys. Field-experimental studies of 67 year old children’s purposeless play with robotic toys created a self-developmental sphere, as well as evoked young girl’s technological interest. Both girls and boys prolonged and intensified their interest according to the amount of gadgets involved. The results disclose a learning potential, indicating the importance to develop strategies at an early stage in order to encourage girls to choose technological and engineering educations. The study recommend engineers and toy designers, in cooperation with children, to move towards ’Integrated Play Systems’. Due to an ethological method, the results differ from other studies of children’s play with technological advanced artefacts. © 2002 IEEE

Barriers and Facilitators : Socioeconomic Influences on the Teaching in E-Learning in Higher Education in Developing Countries: A case study of Lagos Nigeria2024Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Numerous socioeconomic factors impact the adoption and implementation of e-learning in higher education institutions in developing nations, posing both opportunities and obstacles. The thesis is titled "Socioeconomic Influences on the Teaching in E-Learning in Higher Education in Developing Countries: Barriers and Facilitators." A Case Study of Lagos, Nigeria" investigates these variables and how they affect teachers' use of e-learning in Lagos' higher education establishments. Based on the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) and the Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology (UTAUT), this study investigates how educators' adoption of e-learning technologies is influenced by social influences, perceived utility, and perceived ease of use.Data was acquired through interviews with educators, administrators, and students using a qualitative research design. The results show that even while e-learning has a lot to offer education, there are several barriers to its widespread adoption, including low technological infrastructure, restricted access to digital materials, and differing degrees of digital literacy among teachers and students. The way technological, organizational, and environmental elements interact to shape the adoption of e-learning is highlighted by the study's analytical framework. This study offers a comprehensive knowledge of the obstacles and enablers of e-learning in Lagos by operationalizing the theoretical ideas from TAM and UTAUT. To close the digital divide and promote inclusive e-learning settings, the findings highlight the necessity of focused interventions, such as improved infrastructure, all-encompassing digital literacy programs, and encouraging institutional policies. This thesis adds to the body of knowledge by providing empirical insights into the unique obstacles and enablers of e-learning in the context of developing nations. It offers doable suggestions on improving e-learning implementation and using technology to improve educational outcomes in Lagos and other comparable contexts for legislators, educational leaders, and stakeholders.

Year)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

I undersökningen intervjuades elva elever i årskurs 9.

Kooperativt lärande som undervisningsmetod i matematik utifrånett lärarperspektiv2023Independent thesis Advanced level (professional degree), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Teacher perception on translanguaging in grades 4-6 in Swedish Schools2022Independent thesis Advanced level (professional degree), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Translanguaging has been breaking ground with ideas that learners’ already mastered languages and the target language should coexist to support and scaffold each other's development, instead of the historically preeminent idea that has been to separate the school language and the target language. The curriculum for Swedish schools does not give any guidelines on how to address this contradiction in research. This degree project aims to examine how English teachers in Sweden perceive the use of translanguaging in their teaching of grades 4-6 (ages 9-12). Also, how they possibly prepare for and implement this in their lessons. The study was conducted through an online questionnaire with a total of 24 participants, with quantitative and qualitative type questions. In addition to the questionnaire, qualitative email interviews were conducted with a total of three participants. The collected data show that the majority of the participating teachers have a positive view of translanguaging. Despite some teachers being against it and believing that target language should be used as much as possible, the school language was still used by all participants to scaffold the learners. Though translanguaging is a relatively new, not very well-known concept, it is being regularly used although not always consciously. Our hope is for this study to generate more research to further define the concept of translanguaging and what effect it has on learners.

Dömd till livstids lärande: Lärande och kompetensutveckling inom företagshälsovården2012Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of the thesis is by advancing Hartman and Osbeck's research results towards the results of the thesis, discussing how the textual content of textbooks corresponds or differs based on James Rest's Four – Component model and previous research works, this thesis will provide an increased understanding of how textbooks might provide opportunities for studentsto deepen their moral reasoning from the didactic perspective of a religion.

The research method used in this thesis is a qualitative content analysis based on an analysis model based on Osbeck's analysis model's categories of ethical competences: Rethinking information, Conducting action, Taking in information and Values.

The thesis’s result that not all the reviewing textbooks contain the example concepts set out in lgr11, and do not contain everyday moral questions that touch on the content that also appears in lgr11 for the subject of religion. The results also did not match Osbeck's research findings, which claim that the curriculum is only consistent with FCM steps 3 and 4. Since this paper's results show that the questions may develop students' moral reasoning based on FCM two steps: 2 – moral judgment and step 3 – moral motivation.
