This report presents DeCaDeR (Design Calibration for simplified future Deconstruction and Reuse), a structured process aiming to support designers, manufacturers, contractors, and other stakeholders in exploring how a building may be deconstructed and reused under a defined future scenario. DeCaDeR is based on a collaborative approach in which an expert team systematically simulates a future deconstruction and reuse process and discusses the implications for design decisions. The process consists of five phases: Framing, Recruitment, Generation, Action, and Renewal through which participants identify strengths, weaknesses, risks, trade-offs, and opportunities for improvement. The process supports the preparation of deconstruction plans.
DeCaDeR has been developed and refined through a series of research and development projects and applied in six building case studies. The experience shows that the process facilitates interdisciplinary dialogue and supports knowledge sharing and helps design teams integrate design for deconstruction and reuse considerations into ordinary design practice. It can be used alongside standards, metrics, and certification systems to strengthen work towards circular construction.
