This master thesis examines the way in which censorship is discussed in Swedish newspapers between the years 2015–2025. The aim of the thesis is to identify the vocabulary used in the articles, different themes and discourses that arise, and how the different discourses align with more general practices in society. The method employed is Norman Fairclough’s three-dimensional model of critical discourse analysis, with discourse analysis as the theoretical framework. The fifty articles that constitute the empirical material were gathered through searches in Retriever Research, where the number of newspapers was narrowed down to six: Dagens Nyheter, Svenska Dagbladet, Aftonbladet, Expressen, Biblioteksbladet and Magasin K. 

During the analysis, six different groups of words in the collective vocabulary were found, which in turn made possible the identification of four common themes in the articles: The role of the library: democracy and politicization; The US as a dichotomy: an inspiration and a cautionary tale; The impact of culture and literature on children; and Censorship, freedom of speech and cancel culture. In connection to these four themes, six different discourses were established in the discussion concerning censorship: a discourse of democracy; a discourse of warning and a discourse of inspiration, both in connection to way the US is portrayed in the articles; a discourse of child protection; a discourse of freedom of opinion; and lastly, a discourse of censorship. Furthermore, these discourses were connected to similar social practices; to laws such as the Library Law and The Convention on the Rights of the Child and to different tendencies indicated in earlier research.
