Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

This thesis studies the technological and economic viability of producing graphite from lignin using a microwave-assisted conversion process.

Lignin, an abundant by-product of the pulp and paper industry, presents a promising low-cost and renewable source for advanced material production. The study assesses capital (CAPEX) and operating expenditures (OPEX) to estimate the minimum selling price (MSP) of the produced graphite, thereby evaluating both process performance and economic viability.

The mass and energy balances were established from experimental data and served as the foundation for the economic evaluation. The results indicate that the MSP of microwave-assisted graphite is approximately 3.3 € per kilogram, which falls within the current graphite market price range of 1.7 – 5.5 € per kilogram. Economic performance indicators show a net present value (NPV) of 79,343,057 € over a 15-year project lifetime and an internal rate of return (IRR) of 46% at a selling price of 3.4 € per kilogram, suggesting potential economic feasibility under the studied conditions.

Although the study shows encouraging results, the technology is still in its early stages of development, and more work is needed to address scaling issues, improve energy efficiency, and enhance product quality. This study adds to the understanding of lignin valorization routes and lays the groundwork for future advancements aimed at increasing the commercial viability of microwave-assisted graphite production.
