Cross-linguistic Influence on the lexicon of French as a third language (L3) : analysis of written productions by Swedish-speaking learners (English)
Abstract [en]

In a society where multilingualism plays an important role in language learning, the study of cross-linguistic influence could help provide a better understanding of how languages already known by learners influence the acquisition of a third language. This study examines the influence of other languages on written French produced by Swedish students learning French as a third language (L3). The research aims to identify the types of influence, their source languages, and their impact on lexical depth over time. The data consists of 40 written texts drawn from a Swedish-speaking French learner corpus from Lund University. The data was manually annotated for different types of transfer, including structural calques, direct borrowings, hybrid formations, and semantic extensions. The results show that structural calques and direct borrowings are the most frequent types of transfer, while hybrid forms and semantic extensions are less frequent. Swedish is the primary source of transfer, especially in structural calques, while English is associated with direct borrowings. Cross-linguistic influence affects not only surface-level choices but also lexical depth, including semantic precision, contextual appropriateness, and collocational use.

Over time, learners shift from direct reliance on known languages to more integrated forms of transfer, developing a more autonomous lexical system in French L3. Cross-linguistic influence continues throughout the learning process. These findings highlight the dynamic and strategic nature of transfer in third language acquisition, underscoring the importance of considering learners' multilingual repertoire in research and pedagogy.
