Abstract [sv]

Denna studie undersöker hur onödig datamigrering vid affärssystem-implementeringar upplevs. Vid implementering av ett nytt affärssystem behöver ofta existerande data överföras från nuvarande system till nya. Om den data som överförs brister i kvalitet, relevans eller syfte kan upplevelsen av projektmedlemmarna påverkas. Studien utgår från den primära forskningsfrågan “Hur upplevs onödig datamigrering vid ERP-implementeringsprojekt?”.

För att undersöka upplevelsen av onödig datamigrering genomfördes sex semistrukturerade intervjuer av respondenter med relevant erfarenhet. Intervjuerna hade i syfte att samla in data om deras personliga upplevelser och åsikter angående onödig datamigrering och effektivitet. Denna data analyserades sedan enligt en tematisk analys för att identifiera upprepande mönster.

Resultatet visar att projektmedlemmar upplever onödig datamigrering olika beroende på vilken roll och vilket ansvar de har i projektet. Konsulter beskriver ofta problem med data som ett hanterbart problem, medan kunder i högre grad påverkas av förseningar och ökade kostnader. Ytterligare så visar resultaten att respondenterna inte lägger mycket emotionell vikt i problemen med data, utan istället är det följder av dessa problem som väcker känslor av frustration eller stress. Dessa följder omfattar minskad kontroll, spänningar mellan konsult och kund samt ökad arbetsbelastning.

Slutsatsen av denna studie är att datakvalitet, ansvarstagande, aktivt deltagande och kunskap om organisation och system är viktiga faktorer som bidrar till ett projekt med minskade negativa upplevelser. Resultatet visar att affärssystemprojekt inte enbart handlar om tekniska faktorer, utan även om hur projektet organiseras och hur de olika parterna samarbetar. Vidare forskning kan utöka antalet respondenter för att få en mer generaliserbar bild på upplevelser i branschen. Ytterligare kan en mer teknisk studie genomföras för att identifiera lösningar på de problem som presenteras i denna studie. Slutligen kan AI:s påverkan på datamigrering och datakvalitet undersökas.

Abstract [en]

This study aims to examine how unnecessary data migration affects the experience of project members in ERP-implementation projects. When implementing a new ERP-system, existing data often needs to be transferred from the existing systems to the new ERP-system. The experience of the project members can be affected if the data that is transferred contains errors in quality, relevance or purpose. The primary research question for the conducted study was “How is unnecessary data migration experienced in ERP implementation projects?”

To answer the research question, six semi-structured interviews with participants who have practical experience of ERP-implementations and data migration were conducted. The interviews aimed to collect data about the participants' experiences and opinions regarding unnecessary data migration and efficiency. The collected data was analysed using a thematic analysis to identify recurring patterns in the experiences of the participants.

The result shows that project members experience unnecessary data migration differently depending on their role in the project. Consultants describe data related problems as manageable, while customers often feel more affected by delays and increased costs. The results further show that the participants don't place emotional value in the data related problems and instead describe the consequences of these issues as the source of frustration or stress. These consequences include reduced control, tensions between consultant and customer and increased workload.

The conclusion of this study is that data quality, responsibility, active participation, and knowledge of organization and systems are important factors that contribute to a project with reduced negative experiences. The results show that ERP-projects are not only about technical factors, but also how the projects are organized and how the different parties collaborate. Further research could expand the amount of participants in order to achieve a more accurate account of the general consensus about unnecessary data migration. Furthermore, a more technical study with the goal of identifying solutions to the issues presented in this study could be conducted. Lastly, further research could examine the effect of AI on data migration and data quality
