Design guidance for sustainable product development : identifying knowledge gaps and applying Design for Sustainability principles at Saab Naval (English)
Abstract [en]

Industrial product development is increasingly influenced by sustainabilityrelated requirements, where early design decisions affect material usage, manufacturability, resource efficiency and climate impact. The purpose ofthis thesis was to investigate how sustainability aspects are considered inengineering design decisions within Saab Naval, with a particular focuson responsibility, decision-making logic and the application of Design forSustainability (DfS).The study was conducted as a case study based on semi-structured interviews,a survey study and simplified calculation models related to welding andbending processes. The interviews aimed to identify how sustainabilityrelated trade-offs are handled in practice, while the survey provided a broaderunderstanding of how these issues are perceived within the organization. Thecalculation models were used to compare how different design parameters, such as weld length, material thickness and number of bending operations, may influence resource usage and manufacturing-related sustainabilityaspects. The results show that sustainability issues are considered important, but thatthe connection between overall sustainability goals and practical engineeringdecisions is often unclear. The study also indicates that parameters such asmaterial selection, tolerances and manufacturing methods have a significantimpact on resource usage and manufacturing-related climate impact. Thethesis resulted in a DfS-based design matrix intended to support morestructured and sustainability-oriented engineering decisions.
