Abstract [en]
This entry provides a broad overview of contemporaneous issues in modern cities and city systems, seen from an economic perspective. In our “urban century,” cities tend to become engines of economic, social, and political influence which may even have global footprints. On the basis of an extensive literature review, the strategic role of cities in the current dynamic and technologically advanced space economy is highlighted.
