Abstract [en]

This study examines job satisfaction through a quantitative analytic approach. The aim is to examine whether education constitutes a significant determinant for satisfaction at the workplace, in Sweden. In addition, the study seeks to assess the relative influence of other factors such as social relations, gender, class, income and age, in the matter of job satisfaction. Given the increasing proportion of the population pursuing higher education, it is particularly relevant to explore the extent to which education correlates with job satisfaction. However, previous research shows that social relations at the workplace have always been a contributing factor. Accordingly, this study hypothesizes that social relations may exert a stronger influence on job satisfaction than educational attainment. The theoretical framework of the study consists of Weber’s theory of social stratification, Karasek’s and Theorell’s demand-, control and support model, and Butler’s theory of gender performativity. This study, which is based on multiple linear regression analysis using secondary data from ISSP 2015 - Work Orientations IV shows that the most significant determinant for job satisfaction is the quality of social relations at the workplace. In contrast to expectations, no statistically significant correlation was observed between perceived job satisfaction and gender, age, level of education or income.
