Abstract [sv]
Abstract [en]
Choose second-hand for more sustainable consumption or can it lead to overconsumption? This is what this study is about. Consumption of clothing is at a significantly higher rate compared to previous years. At the same time, the second-hand market has become increasingly common and has developed from physical stores to digital markets, such as Sellpy, where consumers can buy clothes, accessories and shoes through smartphones.
This study examines how the consumer behavior of female consumers in Generation X and Generation Z is affected by digital second-hand markets, such as Sellpy. As well as what differences and similarities there are in the generations' consumer behavior. Therefore the aim of the study is to analyze how factors, such as buying habits and intentions, affect Generation X and Generation Z's consumer behavior. This was conducted using a deductive approach and quantitative cross-sectional design where data was collected with a questionnaire survey (N = 78). The results were produced using statistical software, Jamovi version 2.6 (2024). In the statistics program, independent t-tests and chi-square tests have been performed to measure statistical significance and Cohen's effect size, and to obtain descriptive data. Four different themes were compiled for the study: consumer behavior, the intention-behavior gap, the rebound effect and environmental awareness. These themes, together with the study's purpose and theoretical framework, an analysis model was developed with the intention-behavior gap in focus, where Ajzen's (1991) model for the theory of planned behavior is the basis for the analysis model.
The results shows that Generation X and Generation Z's consumer behavior is affected differently when using second-hand market digital apps such as Sellpy, where different intentions and factors affect them differently. The results show that Generation Z is primarily driven by the economic factors of discounts and offers, while Generation X is more motivated by their personal values linked to the environment and sustainability. At the same time, the generations exhibit similar purchase intentions, although Generation Z is shown to be more influenced by trends and the expectations, opinions and attitude of the surrounding environment. The study also highlights how the different economic conditions of the generations create different consumer behaviors, where Generation Z, with the low gross income, reduces the risk of ending up in the rebound effect. At the same time, Sellpy can drive Generation Z to additional purchases and overconsumption. Generation X, with a higher gross income, has an increased vulnerability to the rebound effect because their gross income gives them greater economic conditions to consume more of both newly produced and used goods. At the same time, both generations report a strong desire to save money instead of spending their financial savings, which contradicts the theory of the rebound effect.
