Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

The study was conducted to investigate how professionals who regularly meet adolescents perceive young males' attitudes towards women and sexual violence, and how these attitudes are constructed in relation to social media. The study's theoretical basis relies on social learning theory, which was used in the interpretation and analysis of the material. The study was carried out using a qualitative approach to enhance overall understanding of the phenomenon. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews. The sample consisted of professionals working in close connection with youths, specifically staff at youth centers and one school counselor. The results showed that young males' attitudes were influenced by several interrelated factors, where the social environment and group dynamics played a central role. Normalization of disparaging language and behaviour towards women was understood to occur in certain groups. Social media was viewed as a central arena where youth are exposed to content and role models with the potential to reinforce these attitudes. Nevertheless, the results indicated that such influences varied depending on contemporary youth culture. The findings also showed a perceived and growing awareness of gender equality among youth. The study's findings and conclusions were that the social context, both in terms of group dynamics and the use of social media, may in certain cases contribute to the normalization of disparaging attitudes towards women. This may, in tum, problematize perceptions of the perpetration of sexual violence against women.
