Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Previous research has shown that serious violent incidents in educational settings may affect individuals´ perceived safety, while knowledge regarding employees' perceived safety in relation to ongoing lethal violence (OLV) in university settings remains limited. Drawing on theories of risk perception, vulnerability, and Protection Motivation Theory (PMT), this study examined gender differences in perceived safety in relation to OLV among employees at Örebro University, as well as the relationship between preventive measures and perceived safety. A quantitative cross-sectional design was employed, using a digital survey distributed to employees at Örebro University in an attempt at a total population study. The final sample consisted of 468 participants. As normality assumptions were not met, data were analysed using the Mann-Whitney U test and Spearman's rank-order correlation. Results showed a lower perceived safety among women than men and a statistically significant negative association, indicating that employees with lower perceived safety perceive preventive measures as more important for their sense of safety. The study contributed knowledge regarding employees´perceived safety in relation to OLV within a Swedish university context.
