Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Densification has become a more prominent strategy for urban development. However, densification has a lot of consequences where some are presented more clearly than others. One of the most commonly mentioned factors is that densification is the direct opposite of urban sprawl. Although the research shows that other factors like social aspects, congestion, traffic and urban livability often get overlooked in favor of economic gain.

Against this background, the purpose of this bachelor’s thesis is to examine how densification as an urbandevelopment strategy influences sustainable mobility patterns and the vibrancy of urban environments. Furthermore, the study aims to develop, apply, and evaluate different development strategies in order to assess their impacts.

The results indicate that densification can have a positive impact on both sustainable mobility patterns and vibrant urban environments. This through a more compact urban block structure, which creates shorter distances andtherefore promotes walking and cycling and increases the number of destinations, thereby making investments in public transportation more economically viable. Furthermore, densification enables the implementation of a diverse mix of functions contributing to a lively urban environment throughout a greater part of the day. The study also found that combining different strategies creates even more conditions. However, some strategies are easier to implement than others, and their effectiveness is highly dependent on the local context.
