Allotment gardens in transition : The changing position of allotment gardens in Stockholm's urban planning during the twentieth century (English)
Abstract [sv]

Denna studie undersöker koloniträdgårdars ställning inom Stockholms stadsplanering under 1900-talet.

Abstract [en]

This study examines the position of allotment gardens within Stockholm’s urban planning during the twentieth century. The aim is to investigate how and why the position of allotment gardens changed. The study is based on a qualitative document analysis of municipal records from Stockholm City Council and analyses these changes in relation to planning ideals, societal interests, the development of the conservation field and the changing values associated with allotment gardens.

The results show that the position of allotment gardens gradually changed during the twentieth century. After an initially relatively strong position, it weakened as many allotment gardens were removed or relocated during urban expansion. I was not until the latter half of the twentieth century that allotment gardens gained a more long-term position within urban planning. This development is primarily explained by the fact that allotment gardens were treated as a temporary and therefore flexible form of land use, which made them sensitive to shifting planning ideals and societal interests. The stronger position in the latter half of the twentieth century can also be understood in relation to the development of the conservation field and changing ways of valuing environments. The study also shows that the values associated with allotment gardens changed during the century. Initially, allotment gardens were primarily justified through social and subsistence-related values, but were gradually legitimised through recreational, environmental and heritage values.
