Industrial landscapes are often dominated by asphalt, roads, and fenced plots. Theseenvironments are shaped by impermeable surfaces, limited vegetation and ecological loss. Asa result, habitats become disconnected and biodiversity declines. This project is based in theVästberga industrial area, where the site acts as a barrier between the two amphibian habitats,Solbergaskogen and Årstabergsparken. Fragmented breeding, feeding, and hibernationhabitats make it difficult for amphibians to move through the area and complete their lifecycle. Amphibians are not only a species, but also bioindicators that reflect the health ofsurrounding ecosystems. Supporting their habitats can therefore strengthen vegetation andbiodiversity over time. The project draws on Gilles Clément’s concept of the ThirdLandscape, highlighting overlooked and neglected green spaces outside formal planning thatstill hold strong potential for biodiversity.

The strategy of the project is to activate overlooked spaces within the industrial landscape andtransform them into ecological infrastructure. An existing disused railway running through thesite is repurposed into an amphibian habitat corridor. Through decay, water infiltration andadaptive ground materials, cracks and vegetation are encouraged rather than repaired. Smallcracks slowly branch out and expand across the site, forming a network. Over time, apermeable pathway emerges that reconnects habitats and supports movement betweenhabitats.

Rather than viewing industrial landscapes as spaces only for production, the projectchallenges the idea that ecology and industry must remain separated. It explores how residualand neglected spaces can become part of ecological systems without removing industrialfunctions. The proposal presents an alternative approach where biodiversity, decay, andindustrial activity coexist and gradually reshape the landscape over time. In a time ofecological loss, overlooked space
