Abstract [en]
One of the goals with fusion research is to develop fusion reactors that produce electricity, as a sustainable and safe energy source for the future. That requires comprehensive knowledge about the fusion reactions involved. One such reaction is the T+T reaction, the fusion between two tritium nuclei. Two neutrons and one 4He are produced, each with a spectrum of possible energies. This project aims to improve the efficiency of neutron-energy sampling for calculations of neutron energy spectra from the T+T reaction.
A Dalitz plot is a two-dimensional plot representing the kinematically allowed region in phase space for the particles created in a three-body reaction. By sampling the kinematic variables from the Dalitz plot, it is possible to generate the energy spectra of the reaction products by means of a Monte-Carlo simulation. Neglecting all interactions between the created particles, the Dalitz plot is a uniform distribution and can be calculated using relativistic kinematics. When particle interactions are considered, the calculations become complicated and a so-called R-matrix model can be used to obtain the Dalitz plot of the T+T reaction. This model splits configuration space into two regions with separate wave functions and then matches them at the boundary in order to describe the physics of the reaction.
As an alternative to the two-dimensional sampling method that is currently being used, the Dalitz plots were integrated to one-dimensional distributions that were then used for sampling. Both when neglecting and considering the particle interactions, the one-dimensional sampling method is around two times as fast as the two-dimensional method. The results of this project can thereby improve the efficiency of neutron-energy-spectrum calculations, which can be used to aid the interpretation of measurement results from fusion experiments.
