Abstract [en]

Fracture mechanics is widely used in the nuclear power industry to assess the operating margin of the reactor pressure vessel. The reactor pressure vessel is typically made of ferritic steel, whose fracture toughness varies with temperature in the ductile-to-brittle transition region and depends on size and constraint.

The Master curve methodology is widely used to describe the fracture toughness of ferritic steels in the ductile-to-brittle transition region. It provides a statistical approach for lifetime assessment but is originally valid only for specimens with a 25.4 mm crack front under high-constraint conditions. A size correction factor was later introduced to extend its applicability to other crack front lengths. This study investigates whether the size correction factor can be extended to low-constraint conditions and elliptical crack fronts using a non-local probabilistic model. This model takes several aspects of the brittle fracture process into account, compared to the probability of failure approach used today, which has been shown to exhibit conservative behavior. This size correction factor is currently also used for elliptical cracks, but it is not known with certainty how well it performs in this case. Therefore, it would be highly beneficial to understand the safety margin when this factor is applied to elliptical cracks analyzed in industry.

The study comprises three parts. First, specimens with straight crack fronts are analyzed under high- and low-constraint conditions. Second, a plate with an elliptical surface crack is evaluated under uniaxial, biaxial and bending loads. Third, a simplified reactor pressure vessel with axial and circumferential elliptical cracks is analyzed. In all cases, varying crack dimensions are considered. In addition to these three parts, some of the investigated cases are compared with the solutions obtained from the ISAAC software for the same crack geometries.

The results show that the size correction factor performs well for straight crack fronts under both high- and low-constraint conditions. Furthermore, under certain constraint conditions, the size correction factor was also found to perform well for elliptical cracks. In addition, in all cases involving elliptical cracks, the Master curve shows conservative behaviour, including those that deviate in behavior. Finally, further work could include investigating additional loading cases to determine whether the same behavior is observed, as well as evaluating the model at other temperatures.

Abstract [sv]

I samtliga fall undersöks olika sprickdimensioner.
