The choice of load-bearing system – Complex decision-making processes and criteria in the selection of load-bearing system (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

In a tradition-based industry, decisions are often based on experience. A Building’s structure, the fundamental load bearing part of the building is 80 % made of concrete for multifamily buildings. However, structures from other materials are still largely unexplored. Concrete also brings large emissions of CO2 compared to timber-based structures. Upcoming environmental CO2 restrictions also affect forthcoming structural decisions. Therefore, there is a need to expose how different factors affect the choice of structural system to simplify the process of selection. Also display how structures can be built with less CO2 emissions. Through a case study, four recent projects with different structures are explored to show differences and vital causes which lead to the choice of structure. An interview study is also made in purpose of expose experience of critical factors for structural choice and the respondents view on a more climate friendly structure for residential buildings. The results show that cost is the most influential parameter when selecting structural system for multifamily buildings. The contractor’s previous experience and internal competence were also identified as important factors. Prefabricated elements of concrete were the most preferred structure from all respondents due to its short build time and simple assembly which results in lower cost for the structure. The results also indicate that multi-family buildings can be constructed with reduced CO2 emissions through climate optimized concrete solutions. Cross laminated timber was perceived as expensive and technically complex, with risk related to moisture during production. Hybrid structures are considered as a promising solution onwards, where materials are used based on their best performances. No factor established by itself the choice of structural system, but could be ranked as cost, organization, factors related to production process, technical claims on the structure and environmental factors. The main contractor’s previous knowledge and experience are considered to have the greatest impact on costs when selecting a structural system. The structural engineer should therefore collaborate closely with both the main contractor and the client. From the main contractor’s perspective, relying on the same construction method in all projects may limit future competence development. In a changing industry, it is therefore important to continue testing new solutions that support a more sustainable construction sector.
