Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

The client, POC Sports, is a company specialized in and that currently sells safety products such as helmets for skiing and cycling. Their product range also includes back protectors for alpine skiing which, as well as other back protectors on the market, provide protection against impact, such as falls on hard surfaces. POC Sports aims to develop a back protector that prevents other types of injuries that can occur during skiing, such as injuries related to compression (hyperflexion), extension (hyperextension), and rotation.

The goal of this project was to develop a concept and a prototype of a back protector that protects the user from more types of injuries than the existing back protectors on the market.

During the project’s preliminary study, interviews were conducted with individuals who in various ways work with people who have suffered from back injuries. The interviews revealed, among other things, that it is desirable to stabilize the core and lower back to ultimately stabilize the spine. The importance of avoiding extreme positions of the body was also stressed during the interviews.

During the concept generation phase, three different concepts were developed, each illustrating a solution for stabilizing the spine and preventing it from reaching extreme positions. The first concept, inspired by corsets, uses fabric straps in a suit to support and stabilize the lower back. The second concept uses a carbon fiber plate attached to the back, which through its spring-like properties prevents the spine from reaching extreme positions, functioning as an exoskeleton. The third concept draws inspiration from the deepest core muscles (Transversus Abdominis), whose function is to protect and stabilize the spine. In this concept there are artificial muscles called McKibben Actuators, which expand radially and contract axially when inflated with pressurized gas, used to increase the intra-abdominal pressure.

The choice of the final concept was made after gathering more knowledge about the different solutions through additional interviews and discussions with POC Sports. The final concept proceeds with, and try to combine, the second and the third concept.

A prototype was built using clothing from POC Sports’ current range, self-made McKibben actuators and a dummy carbon fibre plate. The back protector has not been tested against the requirements specification, but the suit has been inflated and is considered to have good potential for functional testing with continued work. Future work should mainly focus on verifying the back protector’s protective qualities and optimizing the directions of the carbon fibers in the carbon fiber plate.

This type of protection has great potential to be used in more types of protective gear beyond alpine sports. The solution could also be applied in motorcycling, enduro, downhill, horseback riding, and other sports where compression, extension, or rotational injuries occur.
