Between the Authentic and the Artificial : Consumers perceptions of authenticity and transparency in AIgenerated marketing (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

This study examines how consumers perceive AI-generated marketing specifically images and videos, in relation to authenticity, transparency and trust. As artificial intelligence (AI) becomes an increasingly integrated part of marketing, this study aims to understand how consumers perceive and accept content created with AI. The study is based on a qualitative research approach and applied methodological triangulation through focus group discussion and nonparticipatory netnography. The empirical material consists of a focus group with six participants aged 20-35, as well as digital observations and analyses of discussions on Reddit och YouTube.

The empirical data is analyzed using a self-developed theoretical framework, Authentic Technology Acceptance Model (ATAM), which is based on Davis (1989) Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) and Brand Authenticity. The results show that AI-generated marketing is generally perceived as less authentic and less emotionally engaging than human-created advertising. A crucial factor influencing consumer reception is transparency regarding the use of AI. When companies are open about their use of AI, the content is perceived as more credible and honest, which contributes to increased acceptance and trust. The results also indicate that consumers are more likely to accept AI as a supportive tool rather than as a replacement for human creativity. Furthermore, the acceptance of AI-generated marketing is influenced by several factors, including brand establishment, product type and context of the advertisement. The study concludes that the collaboration between human creativity and AI, together with transparency regarding its use, is essential for maintaining authenticity and trust in future marketing. The study contributes to a deeper understanding of how consumers perceive AIgenerated marketing and which factors influence the acceptance of its use.
