Abstract [en]
Metal turning operations expose the cutting tool to extreme conditions. They are exposed to high temperatures and mechanical loads. The combination of high temperatures and loads can lead to the degradation of tool life through plastic deformation. Protective coatings are widely used to prolong the tool life of cemented carbides as they act as a thermal barrier and provide protection against tool wear.
This work investigates the influence three Chemical Vapor Deposition coatings with varying thicknesses has on plastic deformation and temperature distribution. A combined experimental and numerical methodology was applied. Numerical modeling was performed in both AdvantEdge and ANSYS Mechanical. It was performed in two stages, one with only thermal loads and a second stage combining thermal and mechanical loads. Evaluating temperature distribution and plastic deformation in both two- and three-dimensional models.
The results show that coating thickness influences the temperature distribution in the insert. Thicker coatings act as an effective thermal barrier leading to a localized zone with increased temperatures below the coatings. Thinner coatings provide less thermal protection while also allowing for greater heat dissipation into the insert. Thermal loading was performed in two ways. The first method used a directly applied temperature and the second method instead applied a heat flow with the reality lying in between the two extremes. The results from the combined simulations showed 2.7 𝜇m plastic deformation for all inserts leading to the conclusion that further mechanisms such as creep and tool wear must be incorporated to allow for accurate modeling.
