Abstract [en]
The goal of this thesis is to investigate the fatigue behaviour of additively manufactured stainless steel(AM316L) at 300C. Experimental testing, numerical modelling and FE-simulations were carried out to better understand the fatigue behaviour and further develop predictive models.
The main focus of the experimental testing was to conduct strain controlled tests at 300C at strain levels ranging from 1.0% to 0.3%. The effect of different post-processing treatments were compared, the treatments were solution annealing(SA), solution annealing+hot isostatic pressing(HIP) and machining of the surface. Three different categories were tested, As-built SA, As-built SA+HIP and Machined SA+HIP. These results were also compared with previous testing conducted at room temperature. These experiments showed little change in the fatigue life of machined specimens at an increased temperature. However a clear change in the categories with an as-built surface were observed. They performed better at high strain amplitudes compared with the tests at room temperature. Additionally scanning electron microscopy was used to investigate the damage progression at different stages of the fatigue life. Further the effects of different preloads were investigated to see if they could have beneficial effects on the fatigue life on specimens with a rough surface, but no such improvements were observed.
An existing constitutive fatigue model with damage evolution based on plastic strain was developed further. It can now model some of the effects from variable amplitude loading using a plastic memory surface which was calibrated against experiments using a representative load spectrum from the nuclear industry. A modified version of the model was also developed to describe the damage evolution during purely elastic loading.
Furthermore FE simulations were carried out to study local stress and strain concentrations on representative surface profiles of the as-built surface. This highlighted the detrimental effects of surface roughness and increased understating about the kind of surface defects that lead to failure.
