Abstract [en]

Continuous casting has been a critical process in modern steel production, where mould flow behavior directly affects the quality of steel slabs. Because of the extreme temperatures, opacity and environment of molten steel, direct observation of mould flow is close to impossible. It has been a common technique to use full-scale water models combined with Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) as a practical alternative. This enables detailed measurements of velocity fields under controlled conditions. But translating large PIV datasets into clear, interpretable visualizations remains a challenge, often requiring specialized commercial software such as DynamicStudio.

This bachelor’s thesis presents the development of a Python-based visualization and analysis tool for PIV data obtained from a full-scale continuous casting mould water model at the University of Toronto. The script processes raw velocity field data exported as CSV files from DynamicStudio 7.6, performing time-averaging and spatial smoothing before generating streamline plots using Heun’s second-order integration method with Clough-Tocher cubic interpolation. A graphical user interface allows users to configure streamline parameters, including seed density, maximum arc length, and minimum velocity threshold. Both time-averaged and instantaneous streamline visualizations were produced and validated against DynamicStudio’s plots.

Results demonstrate that the Python-based script successfully replicates the quality of DynamicStudio’s streamline plots while offering significant enhancements and customizations such as labelled axes with physical units, embedded experimental metadata, greater configurability, faster computation, and open-source extensibility. The script provides an accessible platform for students and researchers to analyze continuous casting mould flow behaviour and supports future investigation into defect formation mechanisms such as argon bubble entrapment, blisters, and slivers.
