Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Background: The number of people living with dementia is increasing each year. Dementia not only affects the individual diagnosed but also their relatives, who often play a central role in care and support. Despite this, relatives' experiences are not always sufficiently acknowledged in research and practice. Aim: To describe the experiences of relatives during the transition of a family member with dementia to a nursing home. Method: A general literature including 12 qualitative articles and 2 quantitative articles. Results: Relatives's experiences in relation to their loved one were characterized by changed relationships, grief, guilt, loss, and relief in connection with the move to residential care. Relatives ' experiences in relation to healthcare staff were influenced by communication, involvement and continuity, which were significant for their sense of security and trust. Relatives’ experiences in relation to themselves were characterized by a changed role, in which a sense of responsibility remained despite the transfer of daily caregiving responsibility to care services. Conclusion: A family-centered approach is of great importance in dementia care in nursing homes. By including and supporting relatives, nurses can contribute to increased participation, and improved quality of care for both people with dementia and their relatives.
