: A Study of Internal History-Usage in Stora Kopparbergs Bergslags AB/Stora Enso 1946-2007 (English)
Abstract [en]
This thesis examines the internal use of history in Stora Kopparbergs Bergslags AB/Stora Enso through the company employee magazines during a period from 1947-2007. The aim with the thesis is to analyse how history has been presented, used and given meaning in the company internal communication. The study is based on a qualitative text analysis of employee magazines such as Tidningen Bergslaget, Stora Runt, Stora International, Stora Enso Global and Staffin Stora Enso. The analysis is guided by the concepts of historical culture, uses of history and historical consciousness. The thesis shows that history worked as several functions in the company internal communication. During the Post World War Two-period, history was mainly used to create cohesion, pride and continuity among employees especially in connection with the 600-year jubilee in 1947. During the 1970s and early 1980s the use of history became more problem oriented as historical references were used to explain environmental issues, industrial crisis and restructuring. In the middle of the 1980, when Stora Kopparbergs Bergslags AB increasingly became an international forest industry company going under just the name STORA, history was used more strategically to support a new corporate identity and an international brand. After the merger with Enso in 1998 the older historical heritage of STORA remained but became more selective and was subordinated to the creation of a new global Stora Enso identity. The thesis concludes that company history usage is not a neutral or fixed account of the past. It is instead selected, interpreted and used in relation to changing organisational needs. The launch of the new company Bergslagets Skogar in 2026 shows that this process continues as both Stora Enso and the new forest company reactivate older historical resources connected to very long company history that dates back to 1288.
