Abstract [en]
Power transformers have cellulose based spacers in their windings, these spacers are manufactured from non-laminated pressboards. During a short circuit large and rapidly pulsating electromagnetic forces act on the conductors within the winding of the power transformer. These forces cause internal oscillations, which is affected by the mechanical properties of the spacers.
A constitutive model that combines porous elasticity theory with a transversely isotropic material was derived with the use of laminate theory. Viscoelastic deformations were also included in this model. To investigate how the material parameters of this model varied with the loading rate, the model was calibrated with respect to measured stress-strain curves given from tests. The tests included a creep test followed by stress cycling, and both the influence of the pre-load duration and the cycling frequency was investigated. The calibrated model values for the two cycling frequencies showed that the material parameters of the porous layer were more rate-sensitive than those of the transversely isotropic layer, but also that the plastic hardening moduli of both materials changed the most. This model had difficulties recreating the increasing permanent deformation as a function of the number of stress cycles.
During out-of-plane compression tests of pressboard, specimens are stacked to increase the measured deformation. How the contact between the surfaces of the specimens affects the measured response is not investigated in the literature. It was therefore investigated, using tests, whether the contact between specimens caused a measurable difference between the responses by placing flat plates between the test pieces. A difference in the response was observed and modeled with a conceptual model. This conceptual model assumes that surfaces in contact fills each other's gaps and that this increases the stiffness of the response.
The responses measured during the tests showed that the pre-load duration affects the stiffness measured during cycling, but also that this effect depends on the frequency of the applied load. The response given at lower frequencies was attributed to densification and the response at higher by the presence of oil inside the pores of the specimens. The derived constitutive model adjusted to this behavior by changing the values of the plastic hardening moduli, one of the initial yield stresses and the parameters used to determine the elastic behavior of the porous structure. The responses with the specimens separated from each other showed a more prominent non-linear behavior during the first cycle but similar stiffnesses during the second cycle, at least for the lower loading rate.
