Mental health in student life : A literature review on protective and risk factors in the Nordic countries (English)
Abstract [sv]
Resultat: Den tematiska analysen identifierade tre övergripande huvudteman: 1.
Abstract [en]
Introduction: In the Nordic countries, mental health problems among post-secondary students have increased compared to the working population. This is due to students being a vulnerable group that is exposed to individual, social and institutional factors that can act as both protective and risk factors for mental health.
Aim: The aim of this literature review was to examine which protective and risk factors postsecondary students in the Nordic countries perceive as affecting their mental health on various levels.
Method: A structured literature review was conducted using Medline EBSCO and Web of Science. 20 relevant articles were chosen using selection criteria, a search strategy and a quality review template. To analyze the data, a thematic analysis was carried out.
Results: Through the thematic analysis, three main themes were identified. 1. Individual factors where personal development, balancing life as a student and stress management strategies were identified as subthemes. 2. Social factors where social support, exchange of experiences and social networks were identified as subthemes. 3. Institutional factors where study-related factors, pedagogical relationships, campus activities and responsibilities and new roles were identified as subthemes. In all three main themes, both protective and risk factors were identified.
Conclusion: This literature review contributes to a Nordic overview of protective and risk factors that affect post-secondary students’ mental health on various levels. This can be used to create a shared strategy to protect and promote students' mental health.
