The equal sign : The meaning of the equal sign with concrete material in grade 1 (English)
Abstract [en]

The aim of this study is to examine how concrete materials in the form of blocks can support student’s relational understanding of the equal sign in grade one. The study was conducted using a quasi-experimental design whit an intervention group and a control group. Data were collected though pre and posttests and group interviews. 

The results indicate that students in the intervention group developed an understanding of the equal sign as a relation between two expressions with the same value. The use of concrete materials can appear to support student’s reasoning, particularly for those with lower prior knowledge. 

The study suggests that concrete materials can contribute to supporting early mathematical understanding of the equal sign in mathematics.

Syftet med denna studie är att undersöka hur konkret material i form av klossar kan bidra till elevers relationella förståelse av likhetstecknet i årskurs 1. Studien genomfördes med en kvasi-experimentell design där en interventionsgrupp och en kontrollgrupp deltog. Datainsamlingen bestod av för- och eftertest samt gruppintervjuer. 

Resultatet visar att eleverna i interventionsgruppen utvecklade en förståelse av likhetstecknet som en relation mellan två uttryck med samma värde. Användningen av klossar kan stödja elevernas resonemang kring likhetstecknets innebörd, särskilt hos elever med lägre förkunskaper. 

Studien visar att konkret material kan bidra till att stödja elevers tidiga matematiska förståelse av likhetstecknet i matematikundervisningen.
