Abstract [sv]
Abstract [en]
This study examines how teaching synonyms can be used as a instructional strategy todevelop primary school students’ vocabulary. This paper focuses on the researchquestion: In what way can the teacher’s practical instruction in synonyms influenceprimary school students’ vocabulary? To answer this, quantitative surveys directed atteachers are combined with qualitative student observations and discussions, providinga broad empirical basis for analysis. This material has been analyzed thematically toidentify patterns in both teaching practices and students’ linguistic abilities, and theresults have been structured into two main areas: teaching and student responses. The results show both strengths and challenges in working with synonyms. It emergesthat synonym work is most often integrated into daily teaching, rather than treated as aseparate and deliberate component. Particularly in lower grades, active, frequent, and play-based activities appear to have a positive impact on students’ vocabulary. However, students’ metalinguistic awareness, the ability to reflect on structure and rulesof language, can pose a barrier to the development of their vocabulary. At the sametime, the results indicate that students generally find it easier to recognize words than touse them themselves, which can be understood in terms of distinction between receptiveand productive vocabulary. This points to a need for more explicit instruction aboutword meanings and nuances.
