Differences in match load in women’s elite football : comparison between senior team and F19 team as well as running and central positions based on GPS data. (English)
Abstract [sv]
Abstract [en]
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine whether there exist differences in external load between an F19- and a senior team during games in the highest level of Swedish women’s football. Comparison in external load has also been made between running and central positions. The physical parameters included were total distance, high-intensity-running, number of sprints, accelerations and decelerations.
Method: Data was obtained by cooperation with a club on the highest level of Swedish women’s football. The responsible club collected data over the course of a whole season for a F19- and senior team at the highest level of Swedish women’s football. Data was gathered by using the Global Positioning System (GPS) device Catapult Vector S7 (Catapult Sports, Melbourne, Australia). In total 52 games were recorded during the whole season, including 26 games for the F19 team (n = 15), and 26 games for the senior team (n = 14). Only players who played a full game (90 minutes) were included and a mean value of the three most physically demanding games were used for further analysis. Players were categorized into running positions (forwards, wide midfielders, and fullbacks) and central positions (centre-backs and central midfielders). The data was processed, compiled and analyzed in excel before being further analyzed and compared in Jamovi with a two-way ANOVA.
Results: The results showed significant differences in four out of five variables (total distance, high-intensity-running, number of sprints, and accelerations). The senior team showed significantly higher values in all these variables. No significant difference was observed for decelerations, neither between teams nor positions, even though it showed a trend toward an effect. The analysis by position showed a significant difference in both high-intensity running and number of sprints, where running positions showed higher values than central positions.
Conclusion: The results showed a higher physical load for the senior team compared to the F19 team across almost all variables. Additionally, it concluded that position has an influence on high-intensity running and number of sprints, where running positions showed higher values than central positions. The results indicate an increase in physical demand between the senior and F19 team, which should be considered in the planning of training to prepare F19 players for an eventual step up to the senior team.
