Augmented and virtual reality (AR/VR) is a complex digital medium. The difficulty associated with learning how to build with the medium often blocks new designers and laypeople from fully engaging in the craft. In this thesis the researcher engages with making points of entry through seamful design. A material lens is applied l to understand what affordances exist in AR/VR. AR/VR authorship tools are reviewed to see which affordances are less accessible to laypeople. Finally a prototype tool, Alchemic Reality, is made to explore the role that playful interactions and spontaneity have in AR/VR literacy for new designers and laypeople.
