Collaboration between School-Age Educare and School : How Teachers in Compulsory School Perceive Assignments, Roles andOrganizational Conditions in Collaboration with School-Age Educare (English)
Abstract [sv]
Abstract [en]
The school-age educare should through it´s teaching, function as a complement to the school which means that the activities, in collaboration with the school, should contribute to a holistic perspective on students´ development and learning. In school improvement research, the importance of collegial collaboration, shared goals and structured organizational conditions is emphasized to promote development and learning. Previous studies show that the shift of school-age educare from a socio-pedagogical to an educational-pedagogical arena has created uncertainty about how the mission of the activities should be interpreted, and in addition, factors such as time, status differences between teacher categories and different organizational conditions can affect the opportunities for collaboration. The purpose of this study is, from a school improvement perspective, to highlight how teachers from preschool class up to and including grade three perceive the collaboration between school-age educare and school. How they perceive the mission and role of the school-age educare in relation to the school´s mission and role in collaboration for students development and learning, as well as how the organizational conditions for collaboration are perceived, are questions that are posed. The study has a phenomenographic approach and is placed within the framework of school improvement research. The empirical material has been collected through eight semi-structured interviews. The results are presented in a hierarchical outcome space consisting of four categories that show the variation of perceptions that exist about collaboration between school-age educare and school in relation to mission, roles and organizational conditions. The four categories in the outcome space are; individual view, structural view, cultural view and holistic view. Overall, the study shows that collaboration is perceived as a complex phenomenon where both missions, roles and organizational conditions play a role. The results indicate that the mission of school-age educare often is perceived as less clear and sometimes subordinated to the school´s mission, which affects the possibility of equitable collaboration. At the same time, it emerges that organizational structures such as shared planning time are necessary, but not sufficient to create sustainable collaboration. To support students development and learning, a shared pedagogical vision, mutual understanding of missions and roles that provide both parties with a clear mandate in the joint mission is required.
