In the shadow of solar analyses: The role of wind in modern urban planning : A case study of Busholmen in Helsinki (English)
Abstract [en]

This thesis examines the importance of wind in modern urban planning and how digital tools are used in early planning stages. In line with climate change, the need for climate-adapted and sustainable urban environments has become increasingly important. In modern urban planning, energy performance analysis and optimization have become standard within the EU. Solar analysis has long been an established method, especially in the Nordic countries. The impact of wind, however, has received less attention despite its great importance for urban microclimates, thermal comfort and the lifespan of buildings.

In dense urban environments, wind can also contribute positively by improving ventilation, reducing heat and preventing the so-called heat island-effect. By analyzing wind conditions in the early planning stage, one can both prevent problems and create better conditions for urban environments. Wind analysis should not be seen as an alternative to solar studies, but as a complement to creating sustainable, healthy and resilient urban environments.

The study is conducted as a case study of Busholmen in Helsinki, a former hearbour area that has been transformed into a dense urban district. Through a literature study, analysis of planning documents and through exploratory wind simulations in Rhino and Grasshopper, the study investigates how wind has been considered in the planning process of the area. The work aims to explore the importance of wind in early-stage urban planning and the potential role of digital tools used in shaping urban environments.
