Abstract [en]

Cancer remains one of the most prevalent non-communicable diseases globally. While physical activity is crucial for recovery, it is essential to understand the factors that influence participation following a diagnosis to design effective program. This study aimed to understand the characteristics of participants in live-remote physical activity classes offered by the Cancer Society of Finland, including sociodemographic characteristics and previous and current levels of physical activity. Additionally, the perceived barriers and facilitators to participation were studied. A quantitative, cross-sectional survey was conducted among 100 participants of the Cancer Society of Finland’s live-remote physical activity classes. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, Spearman’s rank-order correlation test and Kruskal-Wallis test. The findings revealed a specific participant profile: 99% were female, 86% were highly educated, and the cohort demonstrated high health literacy. While 93% of participants joined for health-related reasons, logistical flexibility and savings in travel time were major facilitators, cited by 75% of respondents. The primary barriers included busy schedules (48%) and a lack of motivation (24%). There was no significant correlation between participation frequency and previous physical activity levels (Rs = -0.06, p = 0.547). There was no significant correlation between participation frequency and current physical activity χ²(6) = 9.82, p = .133. These results suggest that live-remote classes effectively lower the barrier to entry for survivors, regardless of their prior exercise history. However, targeted recruitment is required to engage more diverse populations, particularly men and individuals from lower socioeconomic backgrounds.
