Abstract [sv]

I denna rapport undersöks systemuppbyggnaden kring järnvägens stödfunktioner, såsom signaler och kommunikation. Syftet med rapporten är att utreda huruvida lågspänningsanläggningar inom Trafikverkets järnvägssystem är beroende av avbrottsfri kraft för att kunna vara driftsäkra. Avbrottsfri kraft som UPS, med tillhörande batterilager, är kostsamma och dess betydelse inte helt klarlagd i ett redan redundant system. Rapporten undersöker om signalställverk klarar omkoppling mellan två nät utan spänningshållande funktion, om dimensioneringen är optimal utifrån sin uppgift, samt hur säkringar påverkas av återkommande transienter. Resultatet visar att de flesta signalställverk är beroende av avbrottsfri kraft, då en kort stund av spänningslöshet räcker för att orsaka större driftsproblem. Rapporten visar på att energilagren kan vara överdimensionerade och autonomitiden längre än nödvändigt. En kortare autonomitid kan ge samma driftsäkerhet men till helt andra storlekar på energilager, vilket också öppnar för annan energilagring, primärt superkondensatorer. För framtida studier rekommenderas en ekonomisk analys som klargör när batterier inte längre är kostnadseffektiva relativt alternativen.

Abstract [en]

This report examines the system structure surrounding the railway's support functions, such as signalling and communication. The purpose of the report is to investigate whether low-voltage installations within Trafikverket’s railway system depend on uninterruptible power supply (UPS) to be operationally reliable. UPS’s, together with its associated battery storage, is costly and its actual importance in an already redundant system is not fully clarified. The report investigates whether signal control systems can manage switching between two networks without a voltage-holding function, whether the sizing is optimal for its purpose, and how fuses are affected by recurring transients. The results show that most signal control systems depend on uninterrupted power supply, as even a brief moment of power loss is enough to cause major operational problems. The report suggests that the energy storage is oversized and the autonomy time exaggerated. It further shows that a shorter autonomy time can provide the same operational reliability but with completely different sizes of energy storage, which also opens up for other energy storage, primarily supercapacitors. For future studies, an economic analysis is recommended to clarify under which conditions batteries are no longer cost-effective compared to alternative energy storage technologies.
