Abstract [fr]

Abstract [en]

This study examines the pronunciation of the French voiced fricatives /z/ and /ʒ/ among Swedish learners in years 6–9 (ages 12–15). These phonemes are absent from the Swedish phonemic inventory, although Swedish does include their voiceless counterparts /s/ and /ʂ/. Mastery of the French voiced–voiceless phonemic contrasts /s–z/ and /ʃ–ʒ/ has been identified as a major difficulty for speakers with L1 Swedish and L2 English learning French as an L3. The few previous studies on this topic have focused on university students (Hammarström, 1954; Stridfeldt, 2016) and upper secondary school learners (Stöök, 1967). To our knowledge, research on compulsory school learners is virtually nonexistent. This presentation reports on a pilot study (n = 13) conducted within the framework of a larger project addressing the following research questions:

1. To what extent do Swedish learners in years 6–9 produce the French phonemes /z/ and /ʒ/ in a target-like manner?

2. Is there a relationship between the rate of target-like realizations of /z/ and /ʒ/ and learners’ awareness of the phonemic contrasts /s–z/ and /ʃ–ʒ/?

3. Is there a relationship between target-like production rates, phonemic awareness, and pronunciation instruction as perceived by the learners?

The instrument used in the pilot study comprises four oral production tasks, an AX discrimination task, and an interview concerning learners’ perceptions of pronunciation instruction. The oral tasks (word repetition, text reading, conversation, and word list reading) are adapted from the IPFC protocol (Detey & Kawaguchi, 2008; Racine et al., 2012). The word list used for the repetition and reading tasks includes the 34 words common to all IPFC surveys, supplemented by six minimal pairs contrasting /s–z/, six contrasting /ʃ–ʒ/, and four isolated words containing /z/ and /ʒ/, yielding a total of ten tokens of each phoneme. As the PFC text was deemed too difficult for the participants’ proficiency level, a new text was written modeled on the textbooks used in these school years. The text was first piloted with three learners and subsequently shortened to suit the youngest participants; it is now appropriate for all targeted year groups and contains ten tokens each of /z/ and /ʒ/. The conversation task questions were also slightly revised following the initial pilot (n = 3). These questions, informed by those of the Pro2F project (Pustka, 2024), all follow subject-verb-object word order. This presentation will detail the methodological adjustments made to the instrument as well as the results of the pilot study.
