How is AI literacy described in a healthcare context? : A comparison of the concept of AI literacy in research literature and normative documents in relation to the EU AI Act (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Background: The rapid development and implementation of artificial intelligence (AI) in healthcare raises questions about what knowledge is required to use AI safely and correct.

The EU AI Act stipulates in Article 4 that providers and deployers of AI systems shall ensure a sufficient level of AI literacy among staff and other persons involved in the operation and use of AI systems. However, it is unclear how AI literacy is defined in research literature and normative documents, and how these descriptions relate to the AI Act.

Aim: To examine how AI literacy is described in relation to healthcare in research literature and in normative documents respectively.

Method: Qualitative study in which data collection was based on a scoping review and a document study. Each type of data collection was analysed using qualitative content analysis, focusing on the manifest content.

Results: After comparing how the concept of AI literacy was described in research literature and normative documents respectively, the following themes emerged: Technical and conceptual understanding, Critical and ethical competence, and Practical application. In the analysis of normative documents, the additional theme of Competence needs also emerged. When compared with the AI Act, it becomes clear that the Act cover only parts of the themes. It can be concluded that the AI Act allows greater room for interpretation, whereas the included articles and documents in this study offers a more comprehensive view of what should be included in AI literacy.

Conclusion: The room for interpretation created by the AI Act enables adaptation of competence development to regional conditions but also risks unequal levels of AI literacy between and within regions. To ensure AI literacy in healthcare that promotes equitable, safe, and ethical use of AI, national support is needed to clarify what AI literacy means in practice and to establish shared foundations.
