AI-related competencies for audit associates : A qualitative study on competencies used by audit associates, and how these are communicated and secured during recruitment (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

The auditing industry is undergoing a technological change where AI and digitalization are changing the traditional auditing process while also automating parts of the work previously done by audit associates. This in turn affects their competence and development within the industry. Hence, it is relevant to explore which competencies are perceived as central when using AI, as well as how the usage differentiates between junior and senior audit associates, also how auditing firms communicate and ensures these during the recruitment. The research is based on a quality method with deductive reasoning and inductive elements, where semi-structured interviews are conducted in combination with document study of job listings. The interview material is analyzed thematically through the AKEM-model, and the job listings are interpreted using a signaling perspective and theory of expectation gap.

The result of the study shows that AI-related competencies that are viewed centrally are not entirely explained in terms of technical expertise, but also the ability to judge AI in a critical, purposeful, and responsible manner through professional judgement. Prompting and being able to criticize AI-generated material appears to be the most fundamental. The differences between junior and senior audit associates are most noticeable when judging AI responses in relation to previous experience with auditing work. The external communication of these competencies is limitedly expressed in job listings and therefore can be interpreted as an expectation gap. However, auditing firms adress this issue by gradually developing these competencies after employment.

The contribution of this thesis highlights how AI is practically used when auditing, as well as identifying which AI-related competencies are perceived as central by audit associates, based on interaction between individual ability and organizational directives. Previous research has investigated how digitalization and AI are transforming the auditing process and the emersion of demand for AI-related competencies. This thesis explicitly explores and concretizes which competencies that emerge when using AI. Furthermore, it explains the demand and visibility of these competencies by auditing firms during recruitment.
