Parents’ experiences of the palliative care to their children with cancer diagnosis : A literature study (English)
Abstract [sv]
Abstract [en]
Background: Having a child undergo cancer treatment takes a toll on the parents, where it is normal for them to give up their own wellbeing in order to take care of their child. A better understanding of parents’ experiences of the pediatric palliative care may better the ability of healthcare professionals to accommodate needs and contribution to health equity.
Aim: To explore parents’ experiences of pediatric palliative care for their children with cancer
Methods: A literature study from empirical studies was conducted, with a qualitative data analysis, inspired by Hällgren Graneheim’s methodology. Qualitative articles with parents of children who received palliative care for childhood cancer were included from two databases (PubMed, CINAHL).
Results: 11 articles were included from which four categories were identified: Parents’ participation in care and need for communication, information and education; Parents’ decision-making and the meaning of care relationships; Parents’ access to healthcare and to face the healthcare system; Parents’ need of psychosocial support and management of grief and loss.
Conclusion: Parents’ experiences encompass participation and decision-making in the care for their children while navigating a healthcare system and everyday life. Experiences are both physically and emotionally draining which necessitates care for parents too.
