Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Waterborne systems in the form of emulsions have the potential to be used as sustainable barriercoatings for paper-based food packaging and contribute to a reduced use of fossil based plasticcoatings. However, one challenge for these systems is to achieve rapid drying while maintaininggood barrier properties. To increase the understanding of how formulation and additives affectthe drying process and water barrier properties, several waterborne oil emulsions based onlinseed oil, alkyd oil, and lignin oil were investigated. The aim of this study was to increase the understanding of the drying process of these systems.Different stages of the drying process were identified tactically (finger-press method), after whichFTIR- and Cobb analyses were performed to study chemical curing and the development ofbarrier properties over time. The results showed that the drying process of waterborne oil emulsions consists of both aphysical and a chemical stage, where evaporation is followed by chemical curing throughoxidative crosslinking. The drying process occurs over time but can be studied through changesin the film properties of the material. FTIR analyses confirmed that chemical curing occurredover time, while the water absorption decreased, indicating that the positive development ofwater barrier properties is closely linked to the chemical curing of the film.
