Background: Entrepreneurial Resourcefulness (ER) is a vital concept in Entrepreneurship academia. It allows entrepreneurs to overcome the resource constraints they face in their entrepreneurial journeys through creative, boundary-breaking ways. Prior work on ER and its related concepts (or expressions) has chiefly focused on startups and venture creation, leaving the role of ER in post-startup phase ventures largely by the wayside. Little is understood about how ER manifests in the growth phase. 

Purpose: The purpose of this research is to shed a light on ER manifestations in growth phase ventures, exploring how the expression of ER changes over time and what role ER plays in the further development of ventures. 

Method: This research consists of a qualitative multiple-case study. The founders (and other actors) of 12 ventures currently in the growth phase, spanning various countries and industries, were interviewed to create 12 cases to be used for within-case and cross-case analysis. This data was further supported by secondary data in the form of close to 20 hours of podcasts featuring some of the founders. Analysis was guided by ER literature, and guided by the definitions of 9 expressions of ER. 

Conclusion: The results show that ER remains highly relevant in growth phase ventures, though the expression of the concept shifts significantly. This study identifies three distinct groups of ventures; Surfers, Sculptors and Climbers. Each of these groups is characterized by their respective growth pathway, as well as their usage of the various expressions of ER. Additionally, this research identifies three “ER Pillars”; Manifestations of ER that occurred in all 12 sample ventures’ growth phases. This study contributes to ER literature by extending the understanding of the role of ER in growth phase ventures, and how it is linked to growth in these ventures.
