Abstract [en]

This bachelor thesis was conducted as a KTH Field Study in Nabutautau village in Fiji. The thesis was written in collaboration with the Secretariat of the Pacific Community (SPC) which helped create, execute and fund the project.

The study focuses on the water security of the rural village of Nabutautau, located in the mountainous center of Viti Levu, the largest island of Fiji. The purpose of the project was to conduct a village profile of the inhabitants, their water usage, and their water distribution system, together with a water survey of the three water springs in use. This would then be complemented by a literature review regarding beneficial water investments in rural areas. By identifying what the inhabitants needs are regarding water security and infrastructure in the village, recommendations could be set for future improvements and investments. The main research questions for the study were: What is the current hydrological situation in the village of Nabutautau, including water usage, distribution and disposal practices? How can it be improved in order to increase water security in the village, and what would the anticipated impacts of these improvements be, in terms of sustainability?

The water surveys showed no indication of unhealthy or dangerous water in the water springs as all of the measured parameters were within the boundaries set by WHO, however a limited number of parameters were tested, so no real conclusion regarding the water quality can be drawn. While the level of pH was above the Fiji National Drinking Water Quality Standard in two out of the three springs it was still not deemed a health hazard, as shown in the recommendations set by WHO. Upon completion of the village profile, which included data showing a water usage of 22 000 L/day, a conclusion could be made. Despite sufficient water flow to meet demands during the rainy season, previous studies have made it evident that the village faced imminent water scarcity risks in the dry season. This was underscored by a calculated consumption rate exceeding availability by 7000 liters per day. Because of the low water access from the springs during the dry seasons the recommendations focused on solutions that would increase water access during these months. Two main investments were discovered which would suit the village of Nabutautau. One of these was conducting a drilling for a borehole, using groundwater as a new water source in the village; this would not be as directly dependent on rainfall and could be used all year round. Another solution would be investing in a functioning water storage system, which would greatly benefit the village as most of the water flow during the rainy season is unutilized and flows through the water system.
