Abstract [sv]
Abstract [en]
Both Swedish and international research highlights that young people who are neither in employment, education or training (NEET) have an increased risk of continuing to be unemployed and of becoming and remaining socially withdrawn. Previous research shows that the target group faces challenges such as mental illness, problematic schooling and neurodevelopmental disorders. For most young people a state of social withdrawal means a feeling of hopelessness, guilt and shame. There is a will to get out of this state but a lack of internal or external resources to realize this will. Out of interest of understanding the opportunities professionals have to support this target group, this study has sought a deeper understanding of professionals opportunities to integrate NEET into activity with a particular focus on social withdrawal.
The study had an interpretive theoretical approach and a qualitative approach. The study's implementation consists of semi-structured interviews with seven people who work with supporting NEET to employment. The study has strived for a heterogeneous target group in the sense that the study participants have varying geographical affiliation, work experience and gender. The data has been analyzed using qualitative content analysis and discussed using the theories of positive youth development and the bioecological model.
Professionals who support NEET experiencing social withdrawal into activity have reported that there are several key success factors in supporting the target group. Particularly prominent was the ability to apply individually adapted support and strengthen NEET through a salutogenic approach and collaborate with the individual's private and professional networks. The study’s results confirmed that these approaches are successful but time-consuming. Time and structural prerequisites have been shown to be important components for success. Partly in the form of the opportunity to be able to meet a young person to the extent that is needed, but also to be flexible enough to offer support to the young person when they are ready for a change.
