Trust and mistrust in e-commerce : Similarities and differences between generation X and Z (English)
Abstract [en]

The emergence of e-commerce has brought challenges such as online fraud, difficulties in assessing product quality, and trust issues. Trust is crucial for customers' experiences on e-commerce platforms. Previous studies have shown generational differences in e-commerce attitudes, but there is a knowledge gap regarding factors of trust and distrust between generations. This is relevant for organizations that want to adapt their e-commerce platforms to specific age segments and create more reliable websites. The purpose of this study is to investigate which factors influence trust and distrust on e-commerce platforms for generations X and Z, and to find similarities and differences between the generations. This has been done using qualitative methods with two focus groups and ten individual interviews. The data was analyzed using a thematic analysis on the focus groups and a content analysis on the interviews. The results indicate that factors such as visual design, previous relationships, and contact information influence the two generations' trust to varying degrees. Generation X valued physical presence, domestic organizations, guarantees and recommendations, while generation Z emphasized modern design, smooth payment systems, user-friendliness, and third-party collaborations. Distrust was mainly created by foreign e-commerce platforms, missing contact details and unserious sales strategies for both generations.
