Abstract [sv]
Titel: Läsbarhet i finansiella rapporter. En kvantitativ studie om noternas läsbarhet i stora börsnoterade bolag i Sverige.
Författare: Erik Blomberg och Filip Tifnicevic
Handledare: Lars Olbert

Title: Readability in financial reports. A quantitative study on the readability of notes inlarge publicly listed companies in Sweden.

Introduction: Through different development projects IASB has been trying to improve communication in financial reporting over a long period of time. Amendments in IAS 1 and IAS 8 were implemented January 1, 2023, to clarify how disclosures of accounting principles should be applied, with the purpose of improving the materiality of disclosures. Therefore, it's important and interesting to investigate how these changes have impacted annual reports for Swedish companies.
Purpose: The purpose of this thesis is to investigate whether the readability and information load has changed in the notes of the annual reports for publicly listed companies in Sweden between the years 2019 and 2023.
Method: The study employed a quantitative method with a deductive approach and a comparative design. It examined the notes sections of annual reports from 28 publicly listed companies on the OMXS30 list to answer the purpose.
Conclusion: The results show no significant differences in readability, complexity, and information load during the studied period. These results suggest that the regulatory updates have not yet had a noticeable effect on the readability and complexity of the notes sections in financial reports. The study highlights the ongoing issues of informationoverload and high complexity in financial reporting, which can exacerbate informationasymmetry and negatively impact the decision-making process. The research emphasizes the importance of continued development of financial reporting standards to enhance transparency and usefulness for investors and other stakeholders.
