No Silicon Bullet: Developing a Shooting Simulator for Police Training

Shooting simulators have been around for many years, but as technology progresses, they are becoming increasingly important tools to complement live training. This paper investigates the continued development of a virtual reality shooting simulator for police training. Using design research science methodology, this paper answers the research question of how a shooting simulator that is viable for police training and accepted by users can be developed using commercial and publicly available software and components. By developing a software artifact coupled with a 3D-printed controller adapter and using a simplified version of a qualitatively enriched technology acceptance model measuring usefulness, ease of use and user performance in the simulator, an exploratory study was performed on a sample of police students at the Department of Police Work at Malmö University. The study found that the artifact was suitable for police training, as well as indicated to be easy to use and usable, with additional findings presented as a list of suggestions to be considered for the design offuture shooting simulator projects.
